| #1lord_of_the_uttercoldMay 05, 2008 15:01:45 | Hello all! I'm putting together a character that has some well rolled stats for champaign progressing from 1st to 3rd level. I was thinking a monk would do the trick and am pretty sure the Complete XXX series is open along with the core books. I'd love some suggestions as this is my 1st monk. Here's what I've got so far, I was thinking lots of attacks with high strength and weapon focus to offset the penalties: Human Monk 1 Str: 18, Dex: 15, Con: 16, Int: 13, Wis: 16, Cha: 10 Fort: +5, Ref: +4, Will: +5 Armor Class: 15 (13 flat footed) Hit Points: 11 Flurry Of Blows Unarmed Strike (1d6) AC Bonus (+3) Improved Unarmed Strike Improved Grapple Two-weapon Fighting Weapon Focus (unarmed strike) Grapple: +8 Unarmed Attack: +5, +3/+3, or +1/+1/+1 (1d6+4 damage) |
| #2warningfireMay 05, 2008 15:18:51 | Stunning fist feat. Get tumble as a skill. Why TWF when you get flurry of blows? Trying to think of which book has that feat to increase unarmed damage by 4 monk levels. I know planar handbook has a feat for 1 fire damage to your attacks (hey it adds up). |
| #3reisMay 05, 2008 15:20:20 | superior unarmed strike is in tome of battle |
| #4warningfireMay 05, 2008 15:21:39 | is it called "tome of battle: book of nine swords." Could've sworn i saw it in the book of nine. |
| #5reisMay 05, 2008 15:24:19 | yes |
| #6carnivoreMay 05, 2008 15:34:34 | it doesnt work exactly like that: 1st lvl Monk BAB = +0...... thus with Flurry you are -2/-2... and Add 2 Weapon Fighting(weapon used must be a Monk Weapon) = -4/-4/-4 when you add on for Strength .... it goes to +0/+0/+0 .... then for Weapon Focus Unarmed +1 = your Total Attack bonus is +1/+1/+0 without Flurry but with 2Wpn fight it is: +3/+2 without 2 Wpn fight but with Flurry it is: +3/+3 :D |
| #7phaedrusxyMay 05, 2008 16:46:15 | Stunning fist feat. Improved Grapple is also good at 1st level. I'd take Stunning Fist as a bonus, and Imp. Grapple as a normal feat. Get tumble as a skill. I agree. Why TWF when you get flurry of blows? You can stack them, but with the huge to hit penalty, I don't think it is usually worth it. I know planar handbook has a feat for 1 fire damage to your attacks (hey it adds up). That is absolutely not worth a feat... With your high strength, you might consider carrying around a guisarme, and using it to trip people when they try to move in and attack you. You'll take a -4 penalty to the touch attack to initiate the trip, but they won't get an AoO on you because you're tripping with a weapon. Also, the -4 penalty doesn't apply to the opposed trip check, and if you get counter-tripped, you can just drop the weapon and you're still not "unarmed". If you succeed, take a 5' step up to them, and do a flurry of blows, kicking the crap out of them while they're down. :D |
| #8avilonrayneMay 05, 2008 23:51:05 | it doesnt work exactly like that: Um... with WF:Unarmed, using one of your infinite 'unarmed' weapons from the monk (head, shoulders, knees, toes...you name it), you should have +1/+1/+1 for your attack, or +3/+3 for either just flurry or just TWF (but damage on just TWF will be a little less, since the TWF unarmed attack only gets the 'off hand' strength damage). All of that is in the FAQ It also says that TWF *can* use an unarmed attack; it doesn't necessarily have to be a monk weapon. Basically, same restrictions as Flurry to combine the two. The only difference being that extra attacks from TWF only get the off-hand strength to damage as opposed to the full damage that Flurry gives.Your given bonuses would be correct if the TWF attack were from, say, a kama instead of an unarmed attack, but what monk ever does that? ^^ |
| #9sally_jonesMay 05, 2008 23:59:30 | improved natural attack from MM is a good choice. it increases your damage by one size category. |
| #10carnivoreMay 06, 2008 5:14:29 | Um... with WF:Unarmed, using one of your infinite 'unarmed' weapons from the monk (head, shoulders, knees, toes...you name it), no ... you do not get "Infinite" unarmed weapons... the text is specific... notice: Unarmed Strike: At 1st level, a monk gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. A monk’s attacks may be with either fist interchangeably or even from elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may even make unarmed strikes with her hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed. A monk may thus apply her full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all her unarmed strikes. the text limits you to any of the following:
either fist interchangeably elbows knees feet
although in the real world Headbutts are used .... there is no provision in D&D for it, unless your DM Houserules it you should have +1/+1/+1 for your attack, or +3/+3 for either just flurry or just TWF (but damage on just TWF will be a little less, since the TWF unarmed attack only gets the 'off hand' strength damage). All of that is in the FAQ a first level Monk has a BAB of +0 ..... thus starts with only 1 attack , if he uses Flurry of Blows, he can make one extra attack in a round at her highest base attack bonus, but this attack takes a –2 penalty, as does each other attack made that round. thus a first level Monk that uses Flurry of Blows, has a Full Attack of -2/-2 ....... if the monk also has the feat Two Weapon Fighting ...... they can also use it with the Flurry, the Full Attack will look like this: -4/-4/-4... Weapon Focus(Unarmed)(only applies to Unarmed weapons) will adjust the Attack Bonus as will Strength Bonuses .... thus a Full Attack with Flurry of Blows and Two Weapon Fighting with Weapon Focus(Unarmed) using the Build given will be: +1/+1/+0.... calculated as follows: +1 first itterative attack(+0 BAB -2 Flurry -2 TWF+1 WF(Unarmed)+4 Str) +1 Bonus Itterative attack from Flurry(+0 BAB -2 Flurry -2 TWF+1 WF(Unarmed)+4 Str) +0 Offhand Weapon Attack(+0 BAB -2 Flurry -2 TWF +4 Str) however it must be a Monk Special weapon .. notice: Flurry of Blows (Ex): When unarmored, a monk may strike with a flurry of blows at the expense of accuracy. When doing so, she may make one extra attack in a round at her highest base attack bonus, but this attack takes a –2 penalty, as does each other attack made that round. The resulting modified base attack bonuses are shown in the Flurry of Blows Attack Bonus column on Table: The Monk. This penalty applies for 1 round, so it also affects attacks of opportunity the monk might make before her next action. When a monk reaches 5th level, the penalty lessens to –1, and at 9th level it disappears. A monk must use a full attack action to strike with a flurry of blows. Flurry of Blows is a Full Attack Action .... all weapons used in the Flurry of Blows must be Monk weapons.... or you cant Flurry It also says that TWF *can* use an unarmed attack; it doesn't necessarily have to be a monk weapon. Basically, same restrictions as Flurry to combine the two. The only difference being that extra attacks from TWF only get the off-hand strength to damage as opposed to the full damage that Flurry gives. the Bonuses i listed are correct ..... and take into account for Strength, which doesnt raise BAB, only final Attack bonuses.... Itterative Attacks and Penalties are Based on Base Attack Bonus, gained from Class Levels :D |
| #11avilonrayneMay 06, 2008 7:58:25 | no ... you do not get "Infinite" unarmed weapons... the text is specific... notice: By "infinite" I meant "a hell of a lot of options" (which you gave quite a few of). Hence the quotes. The "head, shoulders, knees, and toes" was a joke referring to an old children's song :P In the 3.5 FAQ, two of the questions specifically deal with monks using FoB and TWF. D&D® Frequently Asked Questions Version 3.5: Date Updated 3/14/08 The description of the flurry of blows ability says there’s no such thing as a monk attacking with an off-hand weapon during a flurry of blows. What does that mean, exactly? Can the monk make off-hand attacks in addition to flurry attacks? Actually, the text to which you refer appears in the entry for unarmed strikes. When a monk uses her unarmed strike ability, she does not suffer any penalty for an off-hand attack, even when she has her hands full and attacks with her knees and elbows, using the flurry of blows ability to make extra attacks, or both. The rules don’t come right out and say that a monk can’t use an unarmed strike for an off-hand strike (although the exact wording of the unarmed strike ability suggests otherwise), and no compelling reason why a monk could not do so exists. When using an unarmed strike as an off-hand attack, the monk suffers all the usual attack penalties from two-weapon fighting (see Table 8–10 in the Player’s Handbook) and the monk adds only half her Strength bonus (if any) to damage if the off-hand unarmed strike hits. To add an off-hand attack to a flurry of blows, stack whatever two-weapon penalty the monk has with the penalty (if any) from the flurry. Attacks from the flurry have the monk’s full damage bonus from Strength, but the off-hand attack gains only half Strength bonus to damage. If the off-hand attack is a weapon, that weapon isn’t available for use in the flurry (if it can be used in a flurry at all, see the previous question). For example, a 4th-level monk with the Two-Weapon Fighting feat and a Strength score of 14 decides to use a flurry of blows and decides to throw in an off-hand attack as well. The monk has a base attack bonus of +3 and a +2 Strength bonus. With a flurry, the character can make two attacks, each at +3 (base +3, –2 flurry, +2 Strength). An unarmed strike is a light weapon, so the monk suffers an additional –2 penalty for both the flurry and the off-hand attack, and the monk makes three attacks, each at an attack bonus of +1. The two attacks from the flurry are primary attacks and add the monk’s full Strength bonus to damage of +2. The single off-hand attack adds half the monk’s Strength bonus to damage (+1). If the monk in our example has two sais to use with the flurry, plus the off-hand attack, she can use both in the flurry (in which case she must make the off-hand attack with an unarmed strike) or one sai for the off-hand attack and one with the flurry. The sai used in the off-hand attack is not available for the flurry and vice versa. |
| #12carnivoreMay 06, 2008 11:31:26 | im not seeing how you are getting past this part:There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed. you cant use other Unarmed Body parts as Offhand attacks.... you can use a Weapon though, but you can only use a Monk weapon in combination with Flurry of Blows(with or Without Two Weapon Fighting) :D |
| #13avilonrayneMay 06, 2008 16:32:42 | im not seeing how you are getting past this part: Read the FAQ. The rules don’t come right out and say that a monk can’t A monk CAN use an unarmed attack as an off-hand attack. Case in point: If the monk in our example has two sais to use with the Read it next time. All of that is in the sblock quotes I put up earlier. You also seem to be thinking that FoB can't use unarmed attacks. It can indeed. When you use the flurry ability, you must attack with either unarmed "Special Monk Weapon" includes unarmed strikes. |
| #14runedkMay 06, 2008 16:50:06 | On TWF and Flurry CO'ers recently had the Uh oh...TWF+Monk Unarmed = FAIL? discussion, which you might find interesting. //Rune |
| #15lord_of_the_uttercoldMay 06, 2008 22:33:29 | Thanks for the suggestions guys. I agree with AvilonRayne's interpretation of TWF + Flurry as the idea for this character came from the FAQ. Superior Unarmed Strike requires a +3 BAB and this module will cap out at level 3 and I don't think the DM will accept Improved Natural Attack as it's controversial and is from a 3.0 source. I wouldn't normally try this trick but for the high strength score offsetting the TWF + Flurry penalties and just drop to 1 or 2 attacks if I can't hit the bad guys. |
| #16shokatsuryouMay 06, 2008 23:24:35 | Superior Unarmed Strike requires a +3 BAB and this module will cap out at level 3 and I don't think the DM will accept Improved Natural Attack as it's controversial and is from a 3.0 source. Improved Natural Attack is in the 3.5 Monster Manual, page 304. It has a requirement of BAB +4, so for you it has the same problem as Superior Unarmed Strike. |
