| #1primalpatJan 06, 2011 14:31:43 | Hey all, I am looking to create a 20th level character for a campaign going into hell. I like the idea of a psychic type character. My problem is, I have never played a 20th level character, and my highest psion was level 12. I would like some advice on builds... Criteria: I would like the character to have full psion manifesting levels, but at the same time be decent in melee combat. I dont want to sacrifice much in the way of manifester levels to accomplish this. If this is impossible (or terrible in the CO sense) point me to a good build for a pure manifester. We have access to all 3.5 books, I think the DM will allow small LA's if needed for the build. Thanks for the help CO! |

(At least, speaking as an old fogey of this forum; during its heyday requests like this were rare.) You're going to have to give up some manifesting to get melee ability. However, there's a few good options. The classic form is the Slayer (SRD version), which you enter as an Egoist. Full base attack, decent manifesting, absolutely killer class features. The Ghostbreaker (third party Hyperconscious book, but written by Bruce Cordell) is another great class, albeit 5 levels long. There are a handful of other passable psion/warrior hybrid options out there, like the Sanctified Mind (Lords of Madness, I believe) but this is the basic core. If the CO library is still online, there were numerous threads on psi-gishes, which is basically what you're looking for. Also, consider hopping over to the Psionics forum and reading through the Psion Build Guide; sample gishes are included there. If you're willing to swap the base class a bit, the Ardent in Complete Psionic is actually a really good psi-gish on its own, without any specific PrCs required. Just pick the right mantles (Justice and Physical Power come to mind) and away you go. (It's worth noting that ardents can learn any power they can pay for - meaning that Practiced Manifester can help them continue to learn high-level powers. Take it at the right level, and lost ML from taking a prestige class won't slow down your power aquisition too much.) A bigger change would be to use the psychic warrior, which is a fine gish in its own right too. I don't think there were any specific anti-demon/devil psionic options out there, though there may be some that transfer to outsiders in general. That can help narrow you down some more, depending on what opponents you expect to face. Hope that helps, or at least gets you started. |

If melee isn't too big a focus, you could just buy a skillful (Complete Arcane 144) jovar (Planar Handbook 68). Skillful is a +2 weapon ability that gives you proficiency with the weapon and increases your base attack bonus to ¾ your HD. |

I really like the slayer class, and have come up with the following: Ranger 1/ Fighter 1/ Psion 8/ Slayer 10 Im going to pump int as high as possible, and take advantage of Schism, Control Body (self), Solicit Psicrystal (Control Body). This will allow me to have strength and dex as dump stats while keeping my int high for manifesting (it adds my int modifier to attack, damage, and AC). I am hoping to do a two-weapon fighting build with some kind of life-stealing/vampiric weapons. What do you guys think i should do for feats? Also, what combination of enchants for weapons should I use? Bodyfeeding looks nice maybe with some way to store vampiric touch (idk lol). |
