I'm making a level one character for a game i'm playing with a few friends and I decided to try something new with playing a rogue-based character and was wondering the best way to go about that.

My plan is to be a rogue-like a possible (Sneaking and stabbing) but while using magic to help maximize both damage and utility. I'd like to keep the use of offensive magic to a minimum, less I fall back into my old habbits of playing strickly as a caster.

I talked to a friend and he suggested something along the lines of 3 rogue/ 2 Wizard, and the rest split between unseen seer and arcane trickster but I want a bit of a second opinion in the matter, as he tends to favor the caster side over the rogue side.

I'd also appreciate any suggestions on stat allocation, Skill priority, feat choices, and item choices. I already chose a whisper gnome as my race, which i've heard is a good choice but i'm open to feed-back.

See the Wizsassin, Gnowhere Gnome, and #1 Snoipah builds in my sig. (More or less in that order.) Or play a factotum.

I'll browse through those but what can a factotum offer that a magic-ish rogue wouldn't?

Rogue 1/Wizard 4/Unseen Seer 10/Spellwarp Sniper 5 will be better. I don't recall the best time to put in Spellwarp Sniper but probably just after getting Hunter's Eye online from Unseen Seer will likely be best.

How about some sort of Spellthief?

Sorry I missed the stabbyness part, yeah you'd just want to leave out Spellwarp Sniper and top up with Daggerspell Mage or Arcane Trixter while getting into melee range and praying nobody got by your miss chance and hit you.

You know, RT just reminded me that I forgot a perfect match for you. From my sig, DH's Eat Sleep Gank build is a knife specialist that also can wield some pretty useful magic as a secondary effect.

Incidentally, a villain using a build very similar to that has the special honor of being the only villan to survive a direct alpha strike from our party, as well as one of only two to score a successful PC kill in either of our long-term games. (In both cases we got better; we keep revivify on hand for exactly this reason). Granted, it's not a fair fight, but a rogue type should never fight fair.

Just to throw the possibility out there, how about the arcane swordsage adaptation?

The desire to constantly huck spells would presumably be mediated, in this case, by the fact that the OP is already aiming to keep offensive magic to a minimum.  If your spells are primarily buffs and utility, you naturally stop hucking spells when you start to stab things in the face.
