| #1charkeNov 11, 2008 15:17:18 | My current DM has asked us to only use the Core rules. (DMG/MM/PHB - no psionics sigh). So I was thinking, what is the MOST powerful character you can make? I DEFY you to create one of those infinited uber combo characters (serriously, cause I'll show up at the game with it if you do.) Mark Charke |
| #2innabinderNov 11, 2008 15:18:41 | Druid 20. Level 1: whatever Level 3: whatever Level 6: Natural Spell win. |
| #3ChristopherGrovesNov 11, 2008 15:24:08 | Read the breaking the core thread. It's like 2 down from this one. |

| #5NiteCyperNov 11, 2008 16:31:47 | My current DM has asked us to only use the Core rules. (DMG/MM/PHB - no psionics sigh). So I was thinking, what is the MOST powerful character you can make? I DEFY you to create one of those infinited uber combo characters (serriously, cause I'll show up at the game with it if you do.) You know what threads I love? Threads like these (NOT). Other (NOT) favorites: ultimate assassin, CO Challenge: break the Cleric/Druid, Quick! I need help to make the most uberest character to beat my friend's Pikachu! Eh is a pretty good pokémon, the DM gave him 'Thunder' and doesn't afraid of anything. "ALL RIGHT, COers! I've got a challenge (haha, challenge... a newbie thinks he can challenge us) for you! I want you guys to make a character that can defeat a dragon using only teh core rules! Anything in the core books allowed! P.s. I nedz it 4 upcman gaem olol" Show I'm sorta hoping this thread gets locked instead of buried. |
| #6ninjarabbitNov 11, 2008 19:42:14 | barbarian1/cleric19 with the strength and animal domains Shapechange into a titan or something else really strong, use your rage, and use the strength domain ability = really powerful character |
| #7tshernNov 12, 2008 7:23:56 | Read the breaking the core thread. It's like 2 down from this one. No, let him read the posting guidelines. |
| #8BloodDragonNov 12, 2008 11:00:11 | Even if you can't be bothered to read the posting guildlines... Go into Surreal's Library(Which is a stick at the top!) and do Ctrl+F: "Core". We know you can read, you would not be here if you couldn't. Either way... Druid 20. Honestly it's that easy. |
| #9charkeNov 12, 2008 14:01:06 | What a funny lot of replies. I've found a group as bitter and jaded as myself. I'm sick to death of the core rules. Being sadled with building a character exclusively from rules I'm close to having memorized, I was looking for a new angle. Apparently, blink, blink, that information is in another thread. What I ended up running was a rogue investigator leaning on the diplomacy/gather information and skipping spot/hide altogether. Unfortunately we're 1st level so the advice to play a 20th level druid has not been an option. Mark Charke |
| #10stpetegamerNov 12, 2008 15:11:40 | You got that reply because you did not post acoording to the guidlines and your post made you sound like a 13 year old who was particularly hormonal that day... Their responses were not sarcastic Druid 20/Cleric 20 are very optimized builds in core you just did not do your research before you made an inane post thus you were punished with inane comments... |
| #11eldarielNov 12, 2008 15:26:01 | And Druid 20 means, for level 1 play, you play Druid 1. For level 6 play, you play Druid 6. For level 10 play, you play Druid 10. For level 20 play, you play Druid 20. Just because the game is not level 20 doesn't mean Druid 20 is not a viable build - on the contrary, the Druid is actually at its best on the lower levels. Similar things apply to Clerics, although they're not quite as strong in core as Druids. |
| #12awaken_D_M_golemNov 12, 2008 16:37:45 | Wizard. Go to a big city, find the 15th level Wizard, get Polymorph Any Object cast on you. Wizards like wizards. Have lot's of readied Dispelling available, to keep it from going away. Leadership for a Cleric. At level 9 take 1 level of Cleric, have your Cohort Cleric 7 give you an Item of Imbue With Spell Ability. Now you qualify for Mystic Theurge, earliest entry. Effectively trading one 9th level spell, for 10 levels of Cleric casting. At higher levels, you wont need the Dispelling because you'll have your own supply of PAO. Cohort cleric gets it's one slot back after a few levels, and also take Leadership. Cohort's Cohort is the Druid. PAOs all around. |
| #13emyNov 12, 2008 17:24:50 | Honestly I'd just go Wizard and use tons of Explosive Runes bombs. This was the same as my response to this when it was posted on /tg/. There are plenty of fun ways to screw around in core without breaking the game completely. Build a pixie tank with Wall of Iron + fabricate + tenser's floating disc. Quick! I need help to make the most uberest character to beat my friend's Pikachu! Eh is a pretty good pokémon, the DM gave him 'Thunder' and doesn't afraid of anything. Dude, pikachu is high tier. You basically need a CoDzilla, Wizard, Spell-to-Power Erudite, Archivist, or Artificer to compete with him. (CEDAAW) |
| #14charkeNov 13, 2008 18:16:13 | 20th level druids really don't hold a candle to Shapechange. Pixies are not a playable race under core rules. Mystic Theurge isn't in the core rules. Once again, the 1st-level campaign doesn't allow me to take the class "20th level druid". Druids are fun up through 10th but don't have the wizard's firepower or the cleric's offensive spells. Animal companions become progressively worse as the gap between character and companion widens (I beleive they always have 1/2 the character's hit dice, unless your DM lets you summon the t-rex.) But some of the non-core elementals you can summon are completely broken. Mark Charke |
| #15muertogNov 13, 2008 18:33:23 | Mystic Theurge is -technically- Core, as it is a DMG prestige class. Druids -are- ridiculous in core. You give up a little direct offense and gain an almost inherent "pre-buff" through your wildshape. And you can further buff the wildshape. Basically it makes you a single-class Gish that far outstrips the resources of the other caster/fighter classes (bard/paladin/ranger). Cleric is the only other one that can come close. |
| #16NiteCyperNov 13, 2008 19:11:32 | Eh, what's CEDAAW and /tg/? |
| #17emyNov 13, 2008 20:13:53 | CEDAAW - Nonsense acronym for cleric erudite druid archivist artificer wizard. Everything is better with more nonsense acronyms. /tg/ - Traditional Games. It's an imageboard. |
| #18stpetegamerNov 13, 2008 23:02:05 | 20th level druids really don't hold a candle to Shapechange. Dude it is hard to tell if you are being hard headed on purpose or you just do not understand what people are trying to tell you. The animal companion is insignificant to being a powerful druid it is all about wildshape as Meurtog pointed out. Cleric is a powerful choice in core for the versatility it gives you, but admittedly not as powerful as druid without DMM. |
| #19eldarielNov 14, 2008 0:43:03 | 20th level druids really don't hold a candle to Shapechange. Uhm? Shapechange is a Druid spell, which pretty much solves everything in Core. Sure, they don't have Time Stop and Gate, but Shapechange is still the best spell in the game. No material component, insane returns. Pixies are not a playable race under core rules. The rules for playing them are in Monster Manual, which is a Core book. Mystic Theurge isn't in the core rules. It's in the DMG, which is a Core book. All that is in one of the three Core books is in Core rules. I don't see what's unclear about this. Once again, the 1st-level campaign doesn't allow me to take the class "20th level druid". You can be going for that. In case it's somehow unclear to you, it involves taking Druid 1, Druid 2, etc. until you end up with as high level Druid as the campaign goes. "Druid 20" simply covers all the levels without specifically typing up every level as that would make no sense. You can generally keep up with the HD as long as you keep switching up your Animal Companion by levels (Riding Dog first, Leopard when you qualify, then Brown Bear, etc.). As long as you sufficiently pump up your Animal Companion (some stat boosts, Bardings/Monk's Belt, Greater Magic Fangs for each weapon, some Resistance-effects, Animal Growth, Air Walk and such), it'll stay relatively useful (although as it isn't a teleporting death ray, it obviously will be of diminished value against spellcasters later on). Druid actually has the best mass destruction spells, so as far as destroying armies and such goes, Druids are the kings of the heap. Also, they have the most versatile Spontaneous Spells in summons (healing, combat, scouting, casting all in one). In addition, they have Heal, some actually decent blasting spells (since they last a bit longer), some decent death magic, all the normal spellcaster's must-haves (Dispel Magic, Polymorph, Teleportation, Wind Wall, etc.) and fine battlefield control. Their spell list is very good for everything but mass boosts (as most of their boosts only work for Animals). Oh yeah, and Wildshape means, should they ever end up in combat, they'll be very much equipped to deal with it. |
