| #1SylvanPrincessApr 03, 2009 19:30:38 | so my friend is starting writing for his first DM experience. it sounds cool, and i think he'll do fine. he let me roll my numbers, and i gotta say, i kinda lik'em. 17 14 14 12 12 12 im thinking half-orc monk. going into a ninja prestige class way later on. i want to use 2 bladed-gauntlets, and go full on crit build with massive hand damage- that is if bladed gauntlet is one of those punching weapons that adds unarmed damage bonuses. otherwise i may use 1 and be bare-handed, or lock gauntleted. i kjnow that wisdom, strength, and dex are all important. my question is, do i put my 17 into str, and gain a 19? 10 min damage at lev 1? or shall i put my 14 there bringing it to 16 @ +3 (putting my 17 into wis?)? i was thinking STR 16 [+3] (+2 racial bonus) DEX 14 [+2] CON 12 [+1] INT 10 [+0] (-2 racial bonus) WIS 17 [+3] CHA 10 [+0] (-2 racial bonus) first feat: exotic weapon proficiency (bladed gauntlet) does a monk get a bonus feat at lev 1? seems i read that ina 3.5 book, but im unsure. |

| #3sofawallApr 03, 2009 20:05:52 | Bladed gauntlet is a weapon, you can't use your unarmed damage with one. Of course, you could ask your DM to houserule. |
| #4SylvanPrincessApr 03, 2009 20:13:20 | Bladed gauntlet is a weapon, you can't use your unarmed damage with one. i thought that certain monk weapons could get the bonus.... still, it would be fine without it i think. |
| #5sofawallApr 03, 2009 20:18:03 | Maybe in 3.0, but I can't think of any weapons that get the bonus, not even gauntlets. (Normal, not bladed, although I figure bladed follow the same rule) |
| #6SylvanPrincessApr 03, 2009 20:28:33 | i guess i just want some good half orc ideas that would go well with a monk |
| #7sofawallApr 03, 2009 20:33:00 | Monk's belt is good. I also recommend grapple. EDIT: I just noticed this was 3.5 now, not 3.0 like your last one. YAY! I'll get back to you in a little bit. |
| #8SylvanPrincessApr 03, 2009 20:36:33 | oh i was wrong. confused it with weapons like the kama. lets u use you unarmed attack BONUS, with favorable number of attacks. |
| #9SylvanPrincessApr 03, 2009 20:38:58 | Monk's belt is good. I also recommend grapple. yay i love sofawall! whatever that actually is! |
| #10sofawallApr 03, 2009 20:51:07 | Improved natural attack, Superiour Unarmed Strike (ToB) Those come to mind immediately. |
| #11karmmeApr 03, 2009 21:53:45 | http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=978174 http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=48573 HalfOrc Monk 20 1 Monk Improved Unarmed*, Stunning Fist*, TWF 2 Monk Combat Reflexes* 3 Monk Ability Focus (stunning fist) 6 Monk Improved Trip*, Improved Natural Attack 9 Monk Imp TWF 12 Monk Weapon Focus (unarmed) 15 Monk Power Attack 18 Monk Leadership -Race: Warforged or Kalashtar -Classes: Psion 1 / Monk 2 / Swift Scion 2 / Primevil 1 / Warshaper 1 -Feats: Improved Natural Attack, True Believer -Psionics: Expansion -Class Abilities: Primevil Form (Dire Lion) -Equipment: Battlefist or Ectoplasmic Fist shard, Fanged Ring, Monk's Belt, Monk's Tattoo & Gloves of the Talon Edit: Monks don't care about critical hits because their critical hits are rare and do not do that much damage. The above builds are shamelessly stolen from the two threads linked. |
| #12WeezelApr 03, 2009 22:28:09 | i thought that certain monk weapons could get the bonus.... still, it would be fine without it i think. The special monk weapons allow you to use flurry-of-blows with them, but they still do their normal damage. |
| #13true_shinkenApr 04, 2009 3:00:00 | The special monk weapons allow you to use flurry-of-blows with them, but they still do their normal damage. Only exception that I know of is the scorpion kama, from MIC |
| #14WeezelApr 04, 2009 3:24:41 | Only exception that I know of is the scorpion kama, from MIC Yep, but if you are allowed to use it, there is an amulet from Savage Species that bears weapon enhancements (same cost an enchanting a weapon) and it is applied to one natural weapon of the bearer... for a monk that means his unarmed strike can be enhanced for almost the same cost as buying a weapon. I think it costs around 600gp ontop of the enhancement costs, from memory. Incidently if you want to get this item banned real fast just suggest putting sizing on it and making yourself gargantuan at will :D |
| #15chibishuffleApr 04, 2009 7:07:54 | The lady half orc monk idea is awesome the image really works well with it ![]() Monk is a very multi ability dependent class or MAD, this means it takes high scores in several stats to work well. As such I recommend putting the 14 into strength and the 17 into wisdom. I feel that having a 16 and a 17 is better than having a 19 and a 14 in this situation. |
| #16SylvanPrincessApr 04, 2009 11:41:01 | The lady half orc monk idea is awesome the image really works well with it thanks, i thought it rather cute! i also agree with you on the 16 and 17 instead of 19 and 14. ive never had the numbers to do a monk before, but i think i can do it now. this character has potential. i gtg but ill talk more later |
| #17ymuckluckApr 04, 2009 14:04:39 | The feat better lucky than good allows you to treat natural "1"s as natural "20"s effectively increasing your crit by 5% |
| #18sofawallApr 04, 2009 14:19:12 | But isn't it only a certain amount of times per day? |
| #19ymuckluckApr 04, 2009 15:00:29 | At the very minimum it's 2 times per day. How many times per day do you roll a 1? |
| #20jameswilliamogleApr 04, 2009 15:02:16 | At the very minimum it's 2 times per day. How many times per day do you roll a 1? I roll one every time I have a "save or die" effect target me. Its a fact. Part of the reason why I'm drawn to Binders, actually... Immunities and such... That picture is a female Half-Orc Monk Shou Disciple, no doubt... Maybe w/ paragon or druidic avenger in there... Check out the first link in my sig for a developed super-monk that I worked on in the past. |

I'm sorry to hear that. How many times per day do you fail a "save or die" effect by rolling a 1? Also better lucky than good is only for attack rolls; I know there is one for saving throws but I don't remember what it's called. If you ever didn't want to play a binder you could easily pick up the feat and never have to worry about rolling a 1 again. (and actually be happy when you see one) |

On average, or when the characters are actually adventuring where the situation would come up? The former might be 0.5 to 1, the latter would be 1-3, depending on the scenario. |
| #23SylvanPrincessApr 04, 2009 16:52:14 | where is this feat located? what book? it sounds nice to have. |
| #24ymuckluckApr 04, 2009 16:52:56 | Per day? On average, or when the characters are actually adventuring where the situation would come up? The former might be 0.5 to 1, the latter would be 1-3, depending on the scenario. It's still one of the few ways to increase your crit beyond keen/improved crit. |
| #25jameswilliamogleApr 04, 2009 17:07:32 | where is this feat located? what book? it sounds nice to have. Its in Complete Scoundrel and requires one to have two luck feats. One luck feat can be gained via a magical location at the back of the book. Its not worth the feats, imo, even when you're unlucky. |
| #26cattynebulartApr 04, 2009 22:57:15 | for a monk consider 2 levels in Swordsage, which gives wisdom to AC, and it is a different bonus than that of a monk so it should stack. Also Swordsage powers fit thematically with a monk. Swordsage is from Tome of Battle. |
| #27sofawallApr 05, 2009 22:01:01 | Swordsage is light armour only, not unarmoured. Trust me, I've thought the same. |
| #28WeezelApr 06, 2009 1:37:01 | for a monk consider 2 levels in Swordsage, which gives wisdom to AC, and it is a different bonus than that of a monk so it should stack. Also Swordsage powers fit thematically with a monk. It's the same bonus... not only does it have the exact same name as the class feature of the monk, but the official ruling shortly after the book came out was that it does not stack. Otherwise every monk or swordsage build would be multiclassed like that ![]() |
| #29sofawallApr 06, 2009 7:10:03 | Actually, no, they wouldn't, as it doesn't say you can use it unarmoured. Only in light armour. |
| #30khorusApr 06, 2009 8:46:26 | Snap Kick for another attack, superior unarmed strike (monk dmg as if 4 lvl's higher) both are found in Tome of Battle Book of Nine Swords, complete warrior has some good things in it like Flying Kick, adds 1d12 to a charge. Death blow (think it is from complete warrior) makes coupe de grace a standard action. Use stunning fist + freezing the life blood. Fist of the forest + Vow of Poverty makes for a interesting character (and I don't mean from just a CO point) living like an animal might be cool for a more feral monk (half-orc?) Just some random thoughts to help you brain storm. |
| #31SylvanPrincessApr 07, 2009 2:13:48 | so i finally got a chance to check out the swordsage...and ive fallen in love...i dont think my current dm will let me (makes me sad) but my current albino drow rogue would be perfect for this class! 20 dex and 14 wis equals a +7 AC not to mention my actual armor~! im psyched! it would also be nice for this Half orc female from this thread...with these numbers from the OP i could be a power house... 17 14 14 12 12 12 (not in tha order) i think i would put the 17 into wisdom and the 14s into str and dex. might be cool. what other race might be a sweet swordsage with these numbers? is there *curious* a faerie race at all? a tiny sword sage LOL |
| #32streaksterApr 07, 2009 2:26:53 | so i finally got a chance to check out the swordsage...and ive fallen in love...i dont think my current dm will let me (makes me sad) but my current albino drow rogue would be perfect for this class! 20 dex and 14 wis equals a +7 AC not to mention my actual armor~! im psyched! PIXIEPIXIEPIXIEPIXIE Ahem, I mean, a pixie might be an interesting and fun choice. You could put the 17 into DEX, grab the Shadow Blade feat (huge DEX bonus!), and then grab a reach weapon and Flyby attack. Boom! You're an invisible blur than streaks past enemies in the air while swatting them with a polearm. And thanks to Shadow Blade, your weapon finesse bonus feat, and strikes, you'd do quite acceptable damage. |
| #33SylvanPrincessApr 07, 2009 2:44:10 | where can i find this pixie?? lmao! thanks for the suggestion, i will go look for it. |
| #34streaksterApr 07, 2009 2:49:13 | where can i find this pixie?? lmao! thanks for the suggestion, i will go look for it. SRD or the Monster Manual. It's so much fun. If you do decide to go pixe, check out carnivore's stuff on this board. He wrote a pixe guide, even. |
| #35SylvanPrincessApr 07, 2009 3:16:41 | lol! that would be nuts! i dont think my friend would allow it, but hes never dmed before so..... can someone explain leval adjustment to me please? lol! -4 str +8 dex +6 int +4 wis +6 cha! ridiculous ser! but i cant help thinking about it.,, for a swordsage that gains wis to AC i would put my 17 in dex (as suggested) popping that up to 25 LOL! then my 14 into wis bringing that to 18, and my AC without armor is plus what, +12? and i read that they get a +1 nat armor bonus. so AC +13 (23) and then any size bonuses! oh, and dodge as a bonus feat. 8 str 25 dex 14 con 18 int 18 wis 18 cha is how it would shake out. or i could go 8 str 22 dex 17 con 18 int 18 wis 18 cha this might be better. sweet HPsm still incredible dex and well rounded saves. this still gives me a +9 to ac without bonuses. i need to hear what level adjustment is, so i can apply it in an argument to my new DM |
