Hi, COBers.

I'm going to be starting a new campaign soon, and I decided I wanted to play a slightly shadier/sneakier paladin. The campaign takes place in a homebrew world that will probably feature either taint or sanity mechanics, and my DM says that his paladin codes are fairly lax, so as long as I don't kill a good creature, lie, cheat, or use evil magic/items/feats/etc. I should be fine. I'm probably going to go with human for my race, so please assume I'll have that extra feat/skill point.

I do want to include the Gray Guard PrC in my build, but other than that I don't know what I should be doing, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have a couple specific questions/requests, though:

First, is it worth dipping a couple levels in rogue? I'd like to expand my skills to at least include Gather Info, Intimidate, and Move Silently. Otherwise, are there other ways I could get these as class skills?

Also, I've been told the campaign is going to take place primarily in cities, so I'm not sure if I want a mount. Are there any good variants out there that replace the mount with something more useful?

Thank you for your help!

Bust out Champions of Valor and find the shadow cloak knight sub levels. You get hide in plain sight at level six with paladin. You have to be a gnome though.

Also: Charging smite replaces mount and is freaking awesome.

Church Inquisitor gets you Gather Information and Intimidate. A one-level dip into Cleric can get you Travel (good granted ability and spells) and Trickery (good spells and adds skills). Better yet, convince your DM to use the Prestige Paladin to combine Clerical casting with Paladin abilities.

What book is the Church Inquisitor in?

As to the cleric-dipping, I think my pally's gonna be a worshiper of St. Cuthbert, so I wouldn't get access to those domains anyway. Thank you, though.

Complete Divine. Another way to get those skills as class skills would be Human Paragon.

This build is for a healing specialized Paladin
http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1006880

It may be for healing but it works even better with grey guard, optimized lay on hands can double as a hugely damaging touch attack. Best of all it works with most of the CoV substitutions.

The result is a sneaky, slightly immoral, kight who can both save and kill with a single touch.

Well if you want a darker Paladin , and if your not dedicated to stick to human you can go with Hellbred from Tyrants of the Nine Hells pg78. It allows you to use evil spells and evil magical items regardless of your alignment or class restrictions, their favorite class is Paladin,+2 to intimidate, you get a chose of two ability trees either

(1) +2 con -2 int and you get devil feats(1st,4th,14th ) that are in the book and a +2 vs poison,

or (2) +2 chr -2 con and you get darkvision ,eventually ability to see in darkness like a devil , and telepathy

Charging Smite : was mentioned above is very awesome alternate class feature from PHII especially if you use Devastating Smite (spell) from The Forge of War (Eberron) which doubles the damage you do with your next smite

FEATS

(From Races of Destiny )
City Slicker : Makes Disguise, Forgery, Gather Information, and Knowledge(local) always class skills for you
Urban Stealth: +3 to Move Silently and Hide in cities
Urban Tracking: use Gather Information to track a person down

From Complete Champion

Battle Blessing: you cast paladin spells as swift actions

Since you will be in a city and turn undead I am sure will be needed here and there but rarely id suggest these feats to get some more use out of it.

Law Devotion : gives you a +3 (+5/10th level, +7/15th ) sacred bonus to attack rolls or Ac (and you can change each round) for 1` minute 1/day and if you spend 3 turn undead you can use it again

Protection Devotion: you get a +2 sacred ac bonus (+1/ 4 levels) as does all allies in 30' lasts 1 minute 1/day spend 3 turn undead to use again

And all this will go really well with the Grey Guard
