| #1MickeyMacAttackJan 03, 2011 14:41:56 | So a while back while looking at various feats and abilities I thought I came across something that increased two-handed weapon damage by giving you x2 STR modifier vs the standard x1.5. Needless to say I havent been able to find anything on it again. So does anyone know if there is a way to improve the STR modifier while using two-handed weapons, either through a feat or ability? (preferably non homebrew) Thanks. |
| #2nistraJan 03, 2011 16:09:49 | Hammer of Moradin's Powerful Grip comes to mind. There are other PrC as well |
| #3solis_bjornJan 03, 2011 17:18:42 | Think I remember seeing something about the Exotic Weapon Master PRC - one of their abilities was when holding a one-handed exotic weapon in two hands doing 2x str damage (good for a bastard sword or dwarven waraxe). I'd have to pull out the Complete Warrior book to look for sure but that sounds right and was the first thing that came to mind when reading your post. |
| #4carnivoreJan 03, 2011 17:19:54 | there are a lot of feats that boost it:POWER ATTACK [GENERAL]Prerequisite: Str 13. Benefit: On your action, before making attack rolls for a round, you may choose to subtract a number from all melee attack rolls and add the same number to all melee damage rolls. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The penalty on attacks and bonus on damage apply until your next turn. Special: If you attack with a two-handed weapon, or with a one-handed weapon wielded in two hands, instead add twice the number subtracted from your attack rolls. You can’t add the bonus from Power Attack to the damage dealt with a light weapon (except with unarmed strikes or natural weapon attacks), even though the penalty on attack rolls still applies. (Normally, you treat a double weapon as a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. If you choose to use a double weapon like a two-handed weapon, attacking with only one end of it in a round, you treat it as a two-handed weapon.) A fighter may select Power Attack as one of his fighter bonus feats. |
| #5MickeyMacAttackJan 03, 2011 17:24:40 | I think I remember seeing the hammer of moradin PrC, any idea on actual feats though? I thought there were some racial abilities too? That powerful grip is almost exactly what I remember, I just hope I wasnt looking at homebrew stuff when I saw it ![]() I know about power attack and it is great, not quite what I meant though ![]() |
| #6aelryinthJan 04, 2011 18:45:30 | Matsu Elite Guard. Not sure about the Frenzied Berserker, but I think it does, too. ===Aelryinth |
| #7ObsidianConspiracyJan 04, 2011 22:27:21 | In Savage Species is something that states you can add .5x strength damage per extra hand added to a weapon, now you have to pay more to be able to do it, to increase the length of the handle of, say, a great sword. But by taking a 2 level dip of totemist and binding Girallon arms. Or casting Girallon's blessing... or the insectile template... it is quite easy to gain the extra arms. What this means, if you were to say, take the two levels of totemist, is you'd get a 2.5X strength bonus to your weapon Not sure about the Frenzied Berserker, but I think it does, too. Ten levels of frenzied berserker makes your BAB/power attack trade 1:4 with two handed weapons |
| #8aelryinthJan 05, 2011 22:32:51 | I think you're thinking of that spell that combines multiple pairs of arms into one pair, givinig you a +2 str bonus per pair. There might be the ability to make a 4 handed weapon that increases the str mod...can't remember. ==Aelryinth |
| #9ObsidianConspiracyJan 06, 2011 8:41:19 | Savage Species, Page 42 in the equipment section known as 3 or more hands. It states about adding an extra 1/2 strength per hand |
| #10MickeyMacAttackJan 06, 2011 15:35:24 | Ah good stuff, so far it looks like no straight up feats or alternate features to do this though ![]() I guess it would help if I put a little more info down, this is for my goliath barbarian. Was kind of hoping not having to multiclass in order to do this. Oh well such is life, if anyone has any other tips or suggestions please let me know. Thanks. |
| #11ObsidianConspiracyJan 06, 2011 19:10:11 | Well... Goliath 1(Buy it off if you can)/Barbarian 4/Totemist 2/Totem rager X Use the goliath substitution and gain Mountain Rage to actually become ferocious. Substitue fast movement for Spirit Lion totem and gain pounce For totemist you can bind Girallon arms to your totem Chakra. Pick up Double Bind at some point, so you can double bind your totem chakra |
| #12meegzJan 07, 2011 8:29:02 | power attack was mentioned earlier, ofc supreme power attack from frenzied berzerker PrC @ 10th lvl combat brutes momentum swing (tactical feat from complete warrior) leap attack from complete adventurer combine all these together while using a 2 hander, you can take a -5 to hit and gain 70 damage. looking at it like this, all assumed using a 2 hander supreme pwr atk: -5 hit +20 dmg supreme pwr atk + leap atk: -5 hit +40 dmg supreme pwr atk + leap atk + momentum swing: -5 hit +70 dmg throw in Lion Totem variant so you can get pounce (full attack on a charge which allows the leap attack + momentum swing to happen together...i wanna say its in complete divine) and you've effectively turned yourself into one bad sumbitch any time you can lay steel on something also, if you use the shock trooper feat (complete warrior tactical feat), you can take your power attack penalties away from your AC instead of your 'to hit'. you're a barbarian w/ all this stuff, you're going to get hit anyways, why not make it so you only miss on a nat 1, eh? |
| #13MickeyMacAttackJan 07, 2011 17:11:44 | I actually have a few of these things already suggested.
Shock Trooper I was considering but I just dont have the feats to make it viable, it requires improved bull rush in order to get. And I dont quite understand momentum swing, the wording for it makes it sound like you cant use it with a charge, basically saying you have to charge and then if you use power attack on the next round you get the bonus? So it seems like it doesnt work with a leap attack combo at all as leap attack is basically just a charging jump. Although I could simply be reading all of this completely wrong. |
| #14meegzJan 07, 2011 17:58:16 | which is why you use the lion totem variant which allows the full attack on a charge. if i understand the wording properly with momemtum swing, it doesnt necessarily mean the next round, it means the next time you swing your weapon either way, if i'm wrong, then you get stupid damage regardless. |
| #15aelryinthJan 07, 2011 18:40:57 | Momentum Swing is the following round, not following swing. A Valorous Weapon, Shock Trooper, Pounce and Power Attack are the core of an Uber Charger build. Kindly note that you get Supreme Power Attack at level 19 or so, and can't even start a Frenzied Build until level 9 or 10 or something. Use Fighter levels to get the feats needed. ==Aelryinth |
| #16MickeyMacAttackJan 11, 2011 11:48:58 | Basically I have chosen to keep things simple for both my part and my DM by not multiclassing into a myriad of things, hence the reason I was asking about feats and such. I wasnt particularly trying to make a charger build but I know barbarians kind of fall under that catagory (I guess this is due to their low AC which they try and make up for by killing opponents as quickly as possible?) |
| #17meegzJan 11, 2011 13:32:58 | all you need to take is one (1), singular, prestige class to get the biggest thing, which is the supreme power attack. and its well worth it. just curious, if you could lay out your char for us right now, so we can see if theres anything to finagle |
| #18MickeyMacAttackJan 11, 2011 16:09:58 | Sure thing, here is my character currently in our game. I should note I am using the pathfinder version of the barbarian with the invulnerable rager alternate class feature (we decided a few of the pathfinder classes looked alot more fun so our DM said sure thing) however we are still using 3.5 for all mechanics, feats, abilities unless they are specific to the pathfinder class. As far as material goes, any 3.5 material and pathfinder classes(or anything that comes along with said classes) is good aside from dragon magazines and homebrew. Level 4 Goliath Barbarian (pathfinder) STR - 21 DEX - 12 CON - 20 INT - 8 WIS - 8 CHA - 8 Feats - Power attack Cleave Toughness/Improved Toughness (house rule bonus feat) Abilities - Mountain Rage (Goliath racial alternative) Pounce (lion totem variant) Invulnerable = DR X/- where X is half my level (pathfinder alternative barbarian class) Extreme Endurance - Cold (pathfinder alternative barbarian class) Ultimately the other feats I am looking at are - leap attack - reckless rage - instantaneous rage - exotic weapon prof (heavy) - ettercap barbarian lodge feat The last two are just kind of thrown in there, the exotic weapon prof was to get a heavy weapon (treated as one size larger) since this would let me barbarian wield a huge weapon as opposed to the standard large that he can already use with powerful build. I wouldnt mind replacing this however if i could find something to boost my damage output more since an additional 1d6 is only an average of what 3? Hence while I was looking for something to improve my STR mod with two handed weapons. The ettercap lodge feat basically gives me a bunch of resists and an extra +2 CON while raging, I actually may replace this with the "Roll With It" feat to get another 2/- DR since that what my character is pretty much all about is dishing out the damage while soaking up anything he gets. The leap attack and reckless rage are both something I am pretty much set on, instantaneous rage I really like but I am sure there are better feats out there, and the last two I would replace if I could find some better alternatives. |
| #19meegzJan 12, 2011 1:30:52 | ty ![]() the roll with it feat for an extra dr 2/- isnt going to make that big of a difference, particularly at higher levels. if you're allowed to retrain, then it wouldnt hurt much to have it atm, but other than that....not really worth it, imo. the ettercap barb lodge feat seems like it would benefit you more than the DR in terms of taking the hits. instantaneous rage is helping your damage output none. all you'd be gaining is the extra hp (and less AC) when people smack you around before your initiative. imo, get yourself set up to get into frenzied zerker first and foremost, to get the improved versions of power attack (unless your DM will let you take them as actual feats outside the PrC), then work on the other feats, and if you can fit combat brute in there for the momentum swing, do it. |
| #20MickeyMacAttackJan 12, 2011 1:57:46 | Unfortunately Frenzied Berserker isnt going to happen, I actually was planning on making one with this character from the start but later scrapped the idea due largely to the control issue (I searched high and low for a viable solution but all of them are highly debatable) and the fact that I am the party tank and the last thing my party wants is to have to worry about the mobs trying to kill them along with the only tank doing the same. What would you suggest instead of instant rage? No comment on the exotic weap prof heavy? I know my AC is already going to be terrible, I currently only have 17 with a +1 chain shirt and even fully equipped I would only be able to get up to what about 30 with a +5 breastplate, natural armor and deflection item, I figure DR is going to be a much better alternative since its a built in class feature anyway. It actually already saved me once when we fought a young hydra. |
| #21The_Crimson_DawnJan 12, 2011 2:56:03 | One crappy but useable solution is the warrior knows he is uncontrollable and so does all his raging away from his friends. Every monring your character will go out of sight and go into a frenzy until you go through all your daily uses of frenzy. Then you are not a problem for a party, you have supreme power attack, but you lack the str boost. |
| #22KruskJan 12, 2011 9:35:15 | Things that auto end frenzy for your party- Wand of grease, the climb/and or hide skill, calm emotions spell, flight, invisability. All are fairly low level. |
| #23The_Crimson_DawnJan 12, 2011 15:10:28 | Though all depend on you hitting the berserker before it hits you. Doable but quite a risk considering what a berserker can do in one round. One mistake boom one party member dead maybe two. Considering how many times you are in combat that is risk that occurs a lot (especially since you could start the bloodiest brawl ever by a barmaid walking up and spanking his but because she finds him atractive yes that has happened) even if you have very good chances at preventing your death. So the question is do you feel lucky punk? |
| #24MickeyMacAttackJan 12, 2011 15:57:32 | Well like I said there really isnt any viable way for myself to control the FB and my party really doesnt want to have to deal with it either so I figured it was better for everyone to just not worry about it. So ASIDE from the FB or any other PrC does anyone have any suggestions for feats to take? I am very limited on feats so while I like some of the big feat chains that people come up with they arent really viable for my situation. |
| #25meegzJan 12, 2011 18:52:34 | There isn't really anything else. Getting a sizing weapon and having someone enlarge/polymorph you into something stupid big is the only other way I can think of. And it would be easier to just make buy an eternal wand of calm emotions for the cleric. |
| #26aelryinthJan 12, 2011 23:05:42 | Strongarm bracers let you wield a larger weapon without penalty. Permanent Enlarge Person (not sure it works for a Goliath). DR is a perfectly fine avenue to pursue, if you do so energetically. Note the base barbarian DR is not that impressive...to make it effective at higher levels you're going to need 10+ DR, if not more, to tank the stuff beating on you (i.e. at least equal to extra Power Attack dmg). ==Aelryinth |
| #27MickeyMacAttackJan 13, 2011 0:02:46 | Well the invulnerable rager alternate class I took gets an improved version of the barbarian DR which basically gives him DR equal to half his level so by level 20 I will have DR 10/-, combine this with the rage powers the barbarian gets in pathfinder (one of which being DR that stacks with other sources) and I should be able to get 15+ easy while raging. The only problem with strongarm bracers is they dont stack with powerful build, I believe they specifically says that in the discription. |
| #28aelryinthJan 13, 2011 22:01:22 | The trick is more to get to DR 10 by 10, and have DR 20 by 20! At the very least, you want to stay ahead of the Power Attack curve...if you're going to get hit, make sure it's just for base damage! Yeah, Strongarms basically = Powerful Build. ==Aelryinth |
| #29MickeyMacAttackJan 13, 2011 23:57:04 | Well I dont think barbarians are made to get that much DR XD Maybe if they got as many feats as the fighter then sure. At any rate I think I at least know I am going to be replacing some feats |
| #30ammoghost01Jan 15, 2011 5:23:25 | On the original question, I believe you were looking at the Overhand Chop ability for the Two-Handed Fighter alternate class ability, 7th-level upgrade (we had someone use that build not too long ago before we lost him, the monk/rogue and the cleric in one fight). Alternatively, you can enhance your DR by purchasing an Adamantine Breastplate (which gives you 2/- and should stack with your personal DR/-, unless I have forgotten/missed something to prevent it .. but my DM knows lots about OGL and never mentioned any issues). I built an Invulnerable Rager to replace the Fighter we had that died. I more than replaced him with the Leadership feat and having my character and his cohort (younger, stronger sister) both have Outflank and Amplified Rage (need to be adjacent and/or flanking--half orc racial ability). |
| #31MickeyMacAttackJan 15, 2011 15:36:33 | Yes I know about the Two-Handed Fighter alt, and man is it nice, only thing I dislike about it is that it pretty much makes the barbarian obsolete =/ But yes I chose the invulnerable rager as well specifically because we lost our fighter, as of right now I am the tank, we have a rogue, sorc, cleric, ranger and a monk and so far the DR as saved my life more then once even if its only 2/- right now. Also wanted to expand on it since everything about my rage just puts my AC in the pits, that and I like the idea of shrugging off attacks rather then just not getting hit XD I will look into the adamantine breastplate, that sounds like it would be a good bonus to have provided it stacks. |
| #32ammoghost01Jan 15, 2011 18:14:06 | You might also consider a dip into the Alchemist class--the only reason would be the mutagen ability. It gives you the following: Either +4 str / -2 Int or +4 Dex / -2 Wis or +4 Con / -2 Cha and the bonus type is Alchemical, which you can't get any other way. Mutagens only work for their creator, iirc. Additionally, there are extracts (spells) with only personal range such as shield you can create. Yes, you could buy them but making them at 1/2 cost seems a bit more intelligent. |
| #33aelryinthJan 15, 2011 23:14:46 | Adamantine armor does not stack with class abilities or feats. DR only stacks if it specifically says it does, not if it doesn't.You can get to DR 20 With Roll with Its and stuff. You're getting a bunch from class abilities already, adding 2/- per feat would take a lot of your feats, but really make your DR solid as a rock. Offense might suffer, but that's what rage is for. ==Aelryinth |
| #34MickeyMacAttackJan 16, 2011 1:36:29 | Well I am already doing pretty good damage, on average i hit for about 25 and thats without power attack. I will have to see how the game progresses, I may just do away with getting the exotic weapon prof for another roll with it for a total of 4/- from the feat. I will just have to wait and see how the game plays out, right now the DM seems to like to hit us with creatures with alot of attacks but not a whole lot of damage. |
| #35The_Crimson_DawnJan 16, 2011 2:35:36 | If power attack is considered a problem can you find a way to fit the elusive target feat (requires dodge and mobility I think) and that dodge related combat form feat? This would allow you to nullify power attack bonuses from your dodge target. Then your DR will be used just on the base damage which is more reasonable. |
| #36MickeyMacAttackJan 16, 2011 11:23:29 | I dont quite understand what you mean, power attack isnt really a problem unless I start taking a huge chunk out of my attack. And I dont honestly think I have been hit by anything using power attack. Most damage I have taken so far as been like 30 something and that was from a hydra so my DR actually absorbed about 10 of that damage. |
| #37aelryinthJan 16, 2011 11:36:57 | Monster BAB scales faster then AC grows, and you have a low AC. Go fight a Dragon with 30 HD that gives itself +20 dmg to all attacks against you, and I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about. DR is usually overcome with Power Attack...stuff with DR often has a lower AC. The same tactic can be used against you. ==Aelryinth |
| #38The_Crimson_DawnJan 16, 2011 19:39:22 | Of course you could be "lucky" and the DM may not be using power attack against you. If your DM decides to use (or finds out how nasty it can be) you may change your mind. Of course you could do like so many in 3.5 and play rocket launcher tag and make your offense so nasty that you kill them first. You know your game best we don't so keep that in mind and plan accordingly. |
| #39MickeyMacAttackJan 19, 2011 12:24:47 | Heh well funny thing about power attack, apparently in my last battle my DM actually forgot the big boss had power attack, and he still almost killed me without it. In the end I managed to take him down while prone XD |
| #40sleepyshadowJan 21, 2011 15:11:39 | If DR is what your after, look no farther than Savage Species. A feat called Roll With the Punches grants 1 or 2 (I've forgotten, unfortunately) points of DR each time you take it. Like Toughness, you can take it multiple times, and it would stack with your barbarian DR. The only qualifications are Con 20 and Toughness, and you already have both. |
| #41MickeyMacAttackJan 21, 2011 18:32:04 | Yep that is the exact feat I was planning on taking, its +DR 2/- btw. Really wish I could take epic damage reduction which gives you a +3 that stacks but alas it wasnt meant to be. |
| #42antesseJan 25, 2011 14:02:48 | So a while back while looking at various feats and abilities I thought I came across something that increased two-handed weapon damage by giving you x2 STR modifier vs the standard x1.5. There is a feat that I know of...the problem is that it is 3rd party... I think it is called Strong Two-Handed Strike with prereqs of Power Attack and Cleave as well as high Str and Dex. Trying to remember which book...book is Torn Asunder I think... |
| #43aelryinthJan 25, 2011 21:01:08 | It exists in Pathfinder Beta...Overhand Chop? ===Aelryinth |
| #44sleepyshadowJan 26, 2011 1:22:42 | At the risk of repeating someone else, I will throw out the idea of the Monkey Grip feat. While it may not increase the damage you deal on its own, it does allow you to wield weapons one size category larger than normal, without penalty. Since larger weapons deal more damage, and typically have more reach, that would help in increasing damage as well. |
| #45KruskJan 26, 2011 9:31:34 | Math works out so that unless you are power attacking for full on every attack already, or bigger than large size monky grip is not helpful. Otherwise you get more of a benefit from taking a -2 penalty on power attack. |
| #46MickeyMacAttackJan 26, 2011 11:43:33 | I loved the idea of monkey grip until I found out it was worthless. I don't have a book right in front of me so I cant quote anything but I believe the penalty for welding a weapon one size larger is -2 anyway, so unless you plan on welding one handed weapons monkey grip really does nothing for a two-handed weapon character. Now see if they had made it so that monkey grip simply allows you to increase the size category of weapons you weld by one then it would be worthy of spending a feat on. (not gonna get into the balance issue on this if you have one that's just my thought) I just feel like there shouldn't be any "wasted" feats, especially for a barbarian who is already feat starved. That and I already have powerful build as a Goliath and I think it specifically states in the feat that it does not stack with powerful build. |
| #47sleepyshadowJan 26, 2011 18:09:22 | My apologies. I've never used the feat myself, so I was a little hazy on the exact ruling of it. Have you considered going into the Sohei Rager prestige class? The barbarian rage and sohei fury stack, I believe, plus you get Pounce and haste as class abilities. |
| #48MickeyMacAttackJan 27, 2011 1:09:02 | The only problem with that class is you are required to be lawful while barbarians have to be nonlawful. They also dont get a frenzy but a rage which is strangely enough exactly like the barbarian rage. This class seems more suited for fighters who want to gain the abilities of a barbarian without having to multiclass or go nonlawful (if lawful is your thing). =/ |
| #49sleepyshadowJan 27, 2011 11:41:23 | I really need to play more barbarians. I'd have caught that bit of ruling if I did Ah well. The only other thing I can think of to suggest is if you can somehow swing the Feral template. The stat increases are well worth the +1 ECL, for a barbarian. |
| #50jrmdudeJun 23, 2012 13:22:02 | Yeah there is a feat. I like to use two handed weapons a lot and this feat helps out. Two-Handed Power Strike [Fighter] Prerequisites: Power Attack, Str 15Benefit: When wielding a weapon two handed, you apply x2 your Strength modifier to melee damage. Normal: A character wielding a weapon two handed applies x1.5 Strength modifier to melee damage. |
| #51Tempest_StormwindJun 23, 2012 19:02:07 | Yeah there is a feat. I like to use two handed weapons a lot and this feat helps out. You bumped an eighteen-month-dead thread to point out a homebrew feat? (It's clearly homebrew, labelled as such - a huge portion of D&D-related wikis are clogged full of homebrew material, and for reasons I described here, wikis are not the place to do that.) And it's not even a very good feat at that: Power Attack will add more to your damage in every case unless you're dealing with a truly insane Strength modifier. An identical ability shows up on the Exotic Weapon Master, which is easy to qualify for... yet no one ever takes it. Because the ability really isn't all that hot. It's usually a better investment to work on multiplying your Power Attack returns, which isn't that hard to do. |
| #52jrmdudeJun 23, 2012 20:20:40 | Well the question was a feat that raised strength mod from 1.5 to 2 so this feat does this. Also this feat comes from the Ultimate Feats book on page 75. I didn't figure that book was homebrew. Yes power attack is better with low strength but power attack is a pre req for it. |
