I am going to be playing in a game that will probably only last 3 or 4 sessions, but could potentially pick up and continue past that.  We don't have a lot of details at the moment other than it will be mostly Roleplaying with a little combat when appropriate and it will be very low level, possibly level 1.  What I would like to create is a leprechaun character due to an inside joke that he will absolutely think is hilarious and will make for some very fun RP.  We can't ask him any questions about it for a few more weeks since he is at the tail end of his last semester of Grad school and cannot afford to take his attention away from that.

Here is what I have so far:

Race: Forest Gnome (MM1 - Gnome subrace) + Savage Progression Half-Fey Template (LA+1).  I should be able to get him to agree to just let me go into debt for that.  This is the best way in 3.5 that I can think of to make a Leprechaun.  There are myths that leprechauns are the deformed offspring of faeries/sprites and Halfling/Gnomes.  Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

Class: I am thinking of taking the Beguiler class (PHBII) because it fits the fluff of the character.  The Gnome Illusionist (RoS) would be perfect for the abilities, but since a Leprechaun's power comes from being innately magical and not through rigorous study and arcane symbols the Gnome Illutionist just doesn't seem to fit.

Feats: There are so many to pick from that would be helpful that I am not sure what to take.  Our DM loves the Unearted Arcana book, but I am not sure if he will go for flaws or not.

Abilities: Planning on dumping STR and WIS while focusing on INT and CHA.

Personality: I plan on him being a face type character that loves to play tricks on people, even when it's not a good idea.  For instance, the group happens to meet up with a garrison of King's troops on the road and makes camp with them.  While everyone is asleep he casts an illusion of a dragon in the middle of camp and then watches as chaos (hilarity) ensues.  Then, he convinces everyone that some Clauricans (drunken party cousins of leprechauns) were the culprits.  Kind of like blaming the younger sibling all the time.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Sounds solid. Your spell DCs are the most important part for an illusionist/beguiller, so take feats to buff them. Beguiller probably will be more help outside of combat and a little more durable, so I'd lean that way.

Beguillers benefit from going first in combat, so improved init could be really helpful.

...You know, if you play up the right tropes, you could just grab the Gnowhere Gnome build from my signature and use it wholeheartedly. (It's a whisper gnome beguiler, but it'd work just fine with forest gnome.)

The half-fey template / savage progression is NOT LA+1. It takes two character levels to get everything in the progression, and it's LA+2. (The progression is also a bit oddly worded, as "character level" means "HD"; a Beguiler 1 / Half-fey 2 has a character level of 1, and the corresponding spell-likes.)

Still, if your DM likes Unearthed Arcana (as you suggested), ask about LA buyoff when you get the chance. LA+2 is annoying but manageable with it.

Player's Guide to Faerun has rules on page 190 for taking a negative level adjustment that would allow you to start at 1st-level as beguiler 1 / half-fey 1 / negative adjustment 1. Every negative adjustment gives -1 to most things.

@Tempest_Stormwind, thanks for the suggestion.  I love the Gnowhere Gnome, he's fantastic!  Would you suggest Improved Initiative or DarkStalker for the level 1 feat?

@Maat_Mons: I appreciate that thought and I should have mentioned this, but totally forgot.  Our DM has a thing against Negative Levels in general.  I realize that the Half-Fey is LA+2 if you take the entire thing, but I am only interested in the first level.  I think that adds the flavor and abilities that fit this character.

I really appreciate the quick replies.
