| #1iamthatguyMar 11, 2009 21:09:49 | Hi, I've been on the boards for some time now, and I would like the boys at CharOp to helpme optimize a spellthief. The campaign is very high magic with a custom caster class that is both the wizard and the cleric and the sorceror. We Start at lvl 3 I was thinking of TWFing and flank+steal spell SA to decimate their spell list. |
| #2keithioMar 11, 2009 21:25:22 | Wait, you're telling me that you could have been a class that combined Wizard/Cleric/Sorcerer... and you didn't pick it? What were you waiting for, full BAB and d12 hit die? While I can see the logic in being an Anti caster class in a caster world, you really need to be a caster as well. I recommend taking at most 2 levels of spellthief and using the "Master Spellthief" feat from Complete Scoundrel. The rest of the build should be levels of this ultimate casting class you mentioned, with whatever PRCs are good for it. |
| #3mister_crowleyMar 11, 2009 21:54:47 | Don't go TWF, you're not a true melee character so you'll get taken down quick. For an optimized Spellthief I'd go Whisper Gnome Rogue 1 / Fighter 1 / Spellthief 3 / Assassin X. Take Master SpellThief feat along with Silencing Strike from Races of Stone, pretty wicked. |
| #4sofawallMar 11, 2009 22:02:04 | Honestly, I have to agree with keithio. |
| #5mister_crowleyMar 12, 2009 5:04:15 | Honestly, I have to agree with keithio. that's not much help to the OP ![]() |
| #6keithioMar 12, 2009 6:00:35 | that's not much help to the OP Well more helpful advice needs to know what exactly this silly broken caster class is, because that's what needs to be optimized. |
| #7iamthatguyMar 12, 2009 16:12:15 | 1. I will not use quotes unless neccesary so please do not ask. 2. All of the classes that are from books are going to recive boosts to make them balance out. Also, I meant that he casts spells like a sorceror, but knows all spells similar to wizard and also casts cleric spells, but spontaneously like a sorceror. 3. Unfortunately I do not yet own Complete Scoundrel although we may buy it in the next month, fortunately the campaign starts in about 5 weeks. 4. We do not own the Races of "X" series yet and we have more important things to buy first so please no whisper gnomes... 5. Thanks for all the replies. ![]() |
| #8sofawallMar 12, 2009 20:29:26 | Wait, so the casting class get spells per day like a Sorcerer (the highest of the main casters, I might add), and knows all Wizard and Cleric spells? So you take away the downside of the sorcerer, then add cleric, and remove its downside while you're at it? Again, why isn't everyone playing one of these? Would it suddenly rain Antimagic Badgers or something? Because otherwise, man, seems ever so slightly broken. |
| #9keithioMar 12, 2009 20:57:35 | I bet you can DMM the arcane spells too ![]() |
| #10sofawallMar 12, 2009 21:00:23 | Oh god... I wish I had your DM. |
| #11iamthatguyMar 12, 2009 21:11:49 | Its a very high power campaign The full caster class has somne drawbacks.... 1. the usual crappy saves 2. No BAB at all, once they are out of spells they are done for the day. 3. No armor. 4. No BAB means I can just walk up at start SAing their best offensive spells, which they cant cast for 1min due to my steal spell ability. Then I can either cast it back at them, or use arcane strike and add 1d4xSpell Lvl + SA + regular damage for whatever weapon I am using. 5. I am going to gain some extra feats, skill points and spells of my own to balance things out. 6. Other balancing factors I'm not aware of yet |
| #12sofawallMar 12, 2009 21:14:36 | Still, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Who needs BAB, you have Cleric spells, use Divine Power! |
| #13iamthatguyMar 12, 2009 21:18:46 | Yeah but I'm kind of on probation from anything with obvious game breaking capability. The DM ran a small solo for me once... I kinda, maybe, might have used..... A very slightly watered down version of Pun Pun |
| #14keithioMar 12, 2009 21:50:26 | Yeah but I'm kind of on probation from anything with obvious game breaking capability. Using Pun-Pun in a real game ought to result in a lifetime ban from the CO boards, but I'm secretly jealous of you anyways ;p. If you want to be a spellthief, your only two options are Spellthief18/x2 or Spellthief1-2/arcanecaster19-18 with Master Spellthief. The latter is miles better than the former. Two important feats are Mageslayer & Pierce Magical Protection. To make Mageslayer more potent, you'll want to wield a spiked chain and be at least medium size. I'm not sure if you can make a spellcraft check to find the spell a caster is casting and then whack them and steal it to stop them from casting it - but that'd be damn funny. The concentration check would be a pain in the arse for them anyways. You might want to head into some "Lock-Down" style techniques, like using the stance Thicket of Blades and the feat Stand Still. I'm also not certain you can use arcane strike on stolen spellslots - I'd check with the DM about that. I'll assume that this uber caster class has no familiar, no specialization and no domains. Mention if they do have any of these features. Also, what's the casting stat? I also have no idea how PRCs interact with it - if +1arcane or +1 divine advances it as normal, or if +1 spellcaster class does or if nothing does. I still don't know all the details, but I'm thinking you'd want to be something along the lines of a: Spellthief1/Caster3/Spellthief1/UnseenSeer4/Incantatrix4/InitiateOfTheSevenfoldVeil7 |
| #15iamthatguyMar 13, 2009 16:26:24 | No domains, familiars, etc. Arcane strike and steal spell has been accepted by DM No PrC's for them. Seeing as I don't have complete Scoundrel yet and my only motivation to get it really fast is for one feat, could someone just quote it for me. I'll probably buy the book in like a month or so, but I could use the 5 sentences about Master Spellthief right now.... Please? |
| #16keithioMar 13, 2009 16:54:25 | Master Spellthief Requires: Ability to cast 2nd-level arcane spells, steal spell Benefit: Spellthief and arcane spellcaster levels stack for steal spell and arcane caster level; cast arcane spells in light armor Wasn't sure if I could post this or not, but I found it here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20070105a&page=4 :D So essentially a Spellthief2/Caster18 gets a caster level of 20 for his arcane spells, and can steal 9th level spells. And you get to cast arcane spells in light armor with no ASF! |
| #17iamthatguyMar 13, 2009 17:02:38 | Thanks Just one question... when it says "stacks for steal spell" does it mean only for what level I can steal, or does it include gaining abilities like stealing SR? |
| #18The_Absorbing_ManMar 13, 2009 17:08:24 | Some links that could help you. http://forums.gleemax.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-561572 http://forums.gleemax.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-573540 http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=992549 |
| #19keithioMar 13, 2009 17:16:07 | It only raises the level of spells you get to take with steal spell, but that is the biggest feature of the class. Take one more level to steal buffs, but there's really no reason to ever take more than 2 levels of spellthief if you have access to Master Spellthief. |
| #20iamthatguyMar 13, 2009 17:17:53 | Thanks all. I'll choose a caster and take 1 or 2 lvls in spellthief. |
| #21true_shinkenMar 14, 2009 0:02:08 | It only raises the level of spells you get to take with steal spell, but that is the biggest feature of the class. Actually there's stuff like steal spell-like ability. |
| #22keithioMar 14, 2009 0:14:42 | Actually there's stuff like steal spell-like ability. Master Spellthief doesn't really say it works on steal spell-like ability, but it would work on absorb spell. |
| #23true_shinkenMar 14, 2009 12:13:21 | Master Spellthief doesn't really say it works on steal spell-like ability, but it would work on absorb spell. I never said Master Spellthief worked on that, just said it might be a reason to take a few more levels of Spellthief. But I was amibiguous and for that I apologize. ^^ |
| #24jameswilliamogleMar 14, 2009 12:40:30 | Someday I want to try out a true Spellthief... Maybe a Spellthief / Warlock / Eldrtich Theurge... Maybe with Eldritch Glaive... and Quicken SLA: Flee the Scene... sneak up invisible, full attack w/ the Glaive, then bamf out of there, leaving a double for the caster to deal with... |
