Im looking to build a ranger for a game starting at lvl 9. I have looked at a few different options and was wondering what everyones thoughts were.

I am going bow. Going to be a elf, not sure what kind yet. I am going to use the level one and four Elf Ranger Racial sub levels from the RotW book. I think it would be fun to be able to roll play with the cooshee at my side. I was also thinking about taking a two level dip into the Stalker of Kharash PrC, but i didn't know if it would be worth it to get the scent of evil and FE-evil. Its only a two level dip and I know it would be good use in the game, always lots of evil guys.

Let me know any thoughts you might have on these two options I have brought up. And if one or the other in the long is a waist of time please let me know.

Also If you have a thought on which kind of elf would be best let me know. I have not got that far yet in my research, but any out side input would be welcomed.

Thank you for your time.

What books and resources do you have available?
For ranger builds I like Swift Hunters
Also here is a link you might want to check as well: The 3.5 Ranger Handbook

Between the six of us we have all the books. The only book not allowed is the Book of the nine swords. So any other than that are allowed. I thank you for your replies and will look at what you have suggested.

I would definately say a Dip of Stalker of Kharash 2 lvls. That way you get Favored enemy (Evil) and theirs tons of evil creatures out their.

Horizon walker definately.

Horizon walker is in the DMG/SRD, basically you're taking 6 levels of it to get dimension door as a SLA once every 1d4 rounds and maybe a 7th level if you want tremorsense

Anyways ranger6/pioustemplar4/horizonwalker6/shadowdancer2/SoK2

How about something like this
Taken from: The Swift Hunter's Handbook 2007
Scout 1 Point Blank Shot, Alertness
Scout 2
Scout 3 Precise Shot
Ranger 1 Track, ACF - Arcane Hunter, ACF - Tumble replaces Ride
Ranger 2 Rapid Shot
Ranger 3 Endurance, Favored of the Companions
Stalker 1
Stalker 2
Ranger 4 ACF - Distracting Attack, Swift Hunter
Ranger 5
Ranger 6 Manyshot
Ranger 7 Greater Manyshot
Ranger 8
Ranger 9
Ranger 10 Nemesis (evil)
Ranger 11 Improved Precise Shot
Ranger 12
Ranger 13 Improved Skirmish
Ranger 14
Ranger 15

ACF = Alternate Class Features which have sources listed in the Swift Hunter's Handbook.
This is a very solid build with lots of potential, playability, and survivability. If you can get flaws at first level you can move some feats down and gain Darkstalker and Nemesis (arcanists) as well.

I think I have what im going to go with.

Ranger 1-4 Pious Templar 1 Stalker of Karash 2 Pious Templar 2

That gets me to 9. I think then ill take one more Pious Templar, 1 Ranger for 2nd FE, 6 or 7 Horizon Walker, then finish out with Ranger.

If anyone has Ideas that might work out better for playability sake using what im going with please let me know.

One last thing after i finish getting him set at lvl 9 we have 36k gold to play with. Only thing we can't use is the MIC. Don't ask me why but all the DM's (4 of them in the group) all think its cheese, but lets not dwell there. So i have 36k gold to deck me out and my Cooshee Animal companion out with what we need.

Only thing i know is that we will be taking on alot of drow....

you will need to modify this:

Ranger 1-4 Pious Templar 1 Stalker of Karash 2 Pious Templar 2

Pious Templar requires:

Skills: Knowledge (religion) 4 ranks.
Feats: True Believer, Weapon Focus (with her deity's favored weapon).
Base Attack Bonus: +5.

thus you dont qualify until 5th lvl.... try this instead:

Wood Elf
Ranger 5/ Pious Templar 3/ Stalker of Karash 2

not in that order....

Favored Enemies:
Arcanist
Magical beasts
Evil

feats:
1st lvl: Weapon Focus(Longbow)
Track(ranger Bonus)
2nd lvl: Rapid Shot(ranger Bonus)
3rd lvl: True Believer
Endurance(ranger Bonus)
6th lvl: Point Blank Shot
9th lvl: Nemesis(Evil)
10th lvl: Weapon Specialization(Longbow)(Pious Templar bonus)

i do like Shadowdancer dips for those reasons... usually before i take Underground Terrain Mastery from horizon Walker... that way since Shadowdancer 2 also gives Darkvision 60'.... it is boosted to 120'.... in addition Shadowdancer give a nice set of Class skills and Uncanny Dodge

but because of the Feat reqs.... i would adjust the build as follows:

Wood Elf
Ranger 4/ Monk 2/ Pious Templar 4/ Stalker of Karash 2/ Horizon Walker 6/ Shadowdancer 2

use the Cobra Strike Monk variant from UA

Oh here is what i have. We are playing with the pathfinder rules so PC's get feats every odd level. Also there is no x4 to skills when you put the 1st point into it at 1st lvl. So all skill req are knocked down by 3 ranks when figuring out the req for PrC. So here is what I have let me know how you think it looks.

1 Elf Ranger Racial sub lvl
2 Ranger
3 Ranger
4 Elf Ranger Racial Sub lvl
5 Ranger
6 Pious Templar
7 Pious Templar
8 Stalker of Kharash
9 Stalker of Kharash

Feats
1Weap focus Longbow, Track (RB)
2Point blank shot (RB)
3 True Believer, endurance (RB)
4 cooshee companion (RB)
5 Alertness
6Rapid shot (RB)
7Favored of the Companions
8 scent of evil (SoK)
9 Nemesis(evil) Favored enemy-evil (SoK)

3 Ranger
4 Elf Ranger Racial Sub lvl
5 Pious Templar

+1

since you will get Favored Enemy(Evil) .... that covers most of the really "Bad" things you will encounter..... Arcanists(Arcane Spellcasters) are next.... followed by Evil Outsiders, Aberations, Dragons

dont worry too much about the Drow... in a Planar Environment with Sigil, there are a lot more Dangerous creatures to worry about

The most powerful drow males would be arcanists anyway. You only have to worry with the females.

Question. Why no ToB: BoNS?
#27

relic_hunter

May 07, 2009 10:45:18
Im not sure why no ToB. I guess he didn't want any war blades, but in not really sure.

As for the first favorite enemy I think im going to stick with the Elf Ranger 1st level. They can get FE servants of Lolth. That covers Drow, monstrous spiders of all sizes, and driders. But instead of +2 to the bonuses it gives you a +3.

When i was talking to the DM last night about the build he told me how he liked that I picked that variant because the big thing this campaign sets around is Lolth and the servants of Lolth.

And as for gear. I have 36k to spend, but no MIC. I'm not really sure what to get him up with yet. All I have looked through is the Pathfinder PHB and all it has it the basic stuff.

Ring of Force Shield 8.5K +2 Shield AC
Ring of Protection +1/+2 2k/8k
Amulet of nat armor +1/+2 2k/8k
Bracers of Archery Lesser +1 attack 5k
Bracers of Archery Greater +2 attack +1 dmg 25k
Cloak of Resistance +1/+2 1k/4k
Efficient Quiver 1.8k
Headband of Inspired Wisdom +2 4k

Not really sure yet what to grab for this character.
#28

gorfnad_the_shiznit

May 07, 2009 17:16:09
Bracers of Archery Lesser +1 attack 5k
Bracers of Archery Greater +2 attack +1 dmg 25k

The bonuses on these do not stack so you only need the greater one. I would look into a Collar of Umbral Metamorphosis from Tome of Magic preferably the always on one (you can make the Amulet of Nat Arm into a Vest of Nat Arm without much difficulty to free up the slot for the collar).
Ring of Force Shield 8.5K +2 Shield AC

You can use a buckler without penalty while firing a bow or crossbow so I would go with a +X Mithril or Darkwood Buckler instead of the ring.

Taken from The Lone Drow: Companions of the Hall

Quiver of Anariel:Quivers of Anariel appear to be typical arrow containers capable of holding a score of arrows. However, the quivers automatically replenish themselves with standard or magical arrows, such that they are always full. Some quivers also create arrows made of special materials, such as adamantine, cold iron, or alchemical silver.

Once an arrow it taken from the quiver, it must be used within 1 round or it vanishes.

Moderate conjuration; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, magic weapon, minor creation; Price 28,000 gp (standard arrows), 29,000 gp (masterwork arrows), 32,000 gp (+1 arrows), 44,000 gp (+2 arrows), 64,000 gp (+3 arrows), 92,000 gp (+4 arrows), 128,000 gp (+5 arrows); Add an additional +6,000 gp for adamantine arrows, +4,005 gp for cold iron arrows, or +200 gp for alchemical silver arrows; Weight 1 lb.

One other item I would look into is the quiver above. If your DM allows it, it will boost your to hit and some to damage but what it really does is free up room on your bow for all the fun enchantments like mage bane, seeking, and what not.

For the bracers I know they don't stack. I was going to use one or the other, depending on how much money i had left.

And I talked to the DM today and he said yes we can use the MIC, i just have to pass it by him to see what Im going to use. I looked at the Bow of Wintermoon. Its only 3400 in there but i think i remember seeing it in Races of the Wild for a bit more. Not exactly what to do about a bow.

Ok. I am interested In using the Bow of Wintermoon, the relic from MIC and RotW. Now in MIC it cost 3400. The DM said that anything that we find in the MIC he wants us all to pass it by him. He looked at it and said that its to cheap and must be a miss print.

SO....

He said that it should cost more. He said something that with all the properties that it should cost like 19000. I showed him that it needs a certain alignment, you must worship a particular deity, and that you need to either give up a 5th level spell slot, or have a feat.

I guess what I am asking is do other people on here think that this is a typo and to cheap, or do you think its fair? Also if you think its fair what can i tell the DM to see why it should only cost 3400.

Thank you the help.

Eh. The problem w/ pointing out "limitations" in order to reduce the price of items, especially ones "purchased" out of a book, is that you would not purchase an item if those limitations affected you. This is the same reason why the DM is advised under crafting rules to not allow players to reduce the cost of an item to excessive amounts by putting limitations such as "must be used by {character's class}, be of {character's alignment}, must worship {character's deity}". It makes the item usable by only that character, but then again, who would use it if it was made FOR that character.

If the DM states that the item is too cheap (in his estimation), not much that can be done. The DM is well within his rights to ban the item from the campaign altogether if he feels you are getting too greedy. :/

That said, there are some limitations that need to be pointed out that do work in the price's favour.
1) It is only a +1 bow for most characters.
2) It is a +X Strength bow, which has a relatively low flat price, only if you satisfy alignment reqs.
3) The bane/frost properties are unavailable until you reach 9th level (minimum) because it states you must either have access to (and sacrifice) a 5th level spell slot or take the True Believer feat (and be min 9th level).

At 9th level, an effectively +3 weapon (that should not be able to be enchanted further) is not out of the question. Prior to 9th level, it will only be a slightly better than normal +1 weapon. :/

Where does it say that bucklers don't give a penalty to attack rolls for ranged weapons?

From the SRD

Buckler: This small metal shield is worn strapped to your forearm. You can use a bow or crossbow without penalty while carrying it. You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether you are using an off-hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon), but you take a –1 penalty on attack rolls while doing so. This penalty stacks with those that may apply for fighting with your off hand and for fighting with two weapons. In any case, if you use a weapon in your off hand, you don’t get the buckler’s AC bonus for the rest of the round.

You can’t bash someone with a buckler.

Ok. I see what your saying. So im thinking about not going for that bow. I mean its only 5k short of what it a +3 should be. Ill just make something that will work in my favor. I mean not everything will be a drow, but it kinda fits with what his back ground is. but ill go around and not use the frost. i think that there might be something else +1 that might be better use. Ill have to see what it is i want.

Thank you for your reply and thoughts about it. I guess one thing that helped me not want it anymore was the fact that it cant be upgraded anymore. I mean we'll get more gold....

The bow isn't an end-all, but do make sure to pick up a good handful of weapon and armour crystals. The weapon ones will save you from having to waste +1 enchantment costs for merely elemental damage.

As an additional side note: Armour crystals work in any item that gives a +AC bonus. That includes bracers of armour and shields, as well as armour. That means, you can have 3 different armour crystals active at any given moment.

If you want to get cheesy about it, you -might- be able to say that the crystals work on rings of protection as well... I have to find the exact section that specifically mentions armour crystals + bracers.

Edit: Nope, the exact words are "or any other magic item that grants an armor bonus to AC" (MIC, p.221). Further down the same page is a mention of bracers of armor +1, but rings of prot only give deflection bonuses if I am not mistaken.

for 22.6k the Heartseaker bow (do a search on the Wizards site) is a great investment for a ranger type.

I think you mean this: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20061227a

And yes, it is crazy good.

The Bow of Wintermoon from the MiC is also very awesome, as already mentioned, even without the Frost/Drowbane stuff (you need to burn a feat or a 5th level divine spell slot for that). Basically for +1400 gp, your bow automatically adjusts its pull to your strength.

The original was a +4 bow, which is why it cost so much more. This one is just a +1 (which is actually better... just get a party spellcaster to cast GMW on it).

Thank you for your reply and thoughts about it. I guess one thing that helped me not want it anymore was the fact that it cant be upgraded anymore. I mean we'll get more gold....

You can upgrade it.
Furthermore, a character can improve an existing relic just as he could any other magic item.

I absolutely would take this bow, if the D&D cartoon bow that I linked to above isn't allowed (and it is a bit cheesy/overpowered...). I'm going to use it for my own archer in a game that's just starting.

Here is a partial equipment list from that character (it is an ardent with only 1 level of ranger, but there is quite a lot of overlap in function):

Gloves of the Master Strategist and Dex +2 (7,600), Headband of Wis +2 (4,000), +1 Deepcrystal Elvencraft Precision Bow of the Wintermoon w/Wand Chamber (12,000), Least Revelation Weapon Crystal (400), Piercer Cloak of Resistance +3 (9,900), Golembane Scarab of Health +2 (6,500), Healing Belt (750 gp), Oil of Bless Weapon x10 (500 gp), Oil of Curse Weapon x2 (100 gp), Efficient Quiver (1800), Masterwork tools (+2 circ.): Concentration, Psicraft, MS, Spot, Listen, Concentration, Tumble, Sense Motive, Autohypnosis (450 gp); Lesser Metamagic Rod of Extend (3000), 20 cold iron arrows (2), 20 silver arrows (41), 200 normal arrows

Item descriptions
Piercer Cloak (MiC, 900 gp): +1d6 damage if above your target (very nice if you can fly)
Bow of the Wintermoon (relic to Corellon, MiC, 3,400 gp): +1 composite longbow that auto-adjusts to Str if you are NG, CG, or CN. Acts as Frost and Drowbane if you worship Corellon and spend a 5th level divine slot or have True Believer.
Gloves of the Master Strategist (Ghostwalk, 3,600 gp): True Strike 1/day and functions like gloves of storing
Elvencraft (RotW, 300 gp): Can use bow as quarterstaff
Precision (MiC, +1): Gain Precise Shot feat
Least Revelation Weapon Crystal (MiC, 400 gp): Struck invisible target illuminated for 1 round.

Evil is not a legit category for a Bane weapon. It could be Evil Outsiders, but not just Evil.... unless there is an Evil Bane enhancement somewhere that I don't know about. Holy is what you want against all evil dudes, but it doesn't provide the +2 to your enhancement bonus, and it is a +2 mod instead of +1.

sine there is no Favored Enemy(Evil) except by PrC, i figured that it would be a relatively easy stretch to allow it for a character who already had Favored Enemy(Evil)... ... if it was not allowed you could simply go with:

Blessed(BoED p113)(+1 bonus)
Bless Weapon, always on. Specifically, the weapon does ‘good’ damage (with regards to Damage Reduction) and any Threatened Critical on an Evil opponent is automatically confirmed (does not stack with ‘Keen’, ‘Vorpal’, etc.)

or

Blood Seeking(CWar p134)
Ignores the target’s Cover bonus. If target has Full Cover, but there is an unobstructed path between the attacker & the target & the attacker knows where the target is, then the Full Cover bonus is also ignored, but the target has Total Concealment. Ability does not work against Plants, Oozes, Constructs, etc.

usually it is better than the Precise Enhancement

for a Planescape type campaign based in Sigil .... Evil Outsider Bane is not too bad either

Let's you use it as a melee weapon (same stats as a quarterstaff). This was in my earlier post.

the Main reasons to have Elvencraft Bows...... they are tougher, harder to sunder... but also let you Threaten Adjacent when you are holding a Bow, and you can use it in Melee without switching weapons, and you can use it 2 Handed or with TWF(not both at the same time)

here are some more Bows that would be very useful:

26600gp +1 Seeking Hideaway Blood Seeking Mighty(+4 str) Elevencraft Composite longbow

Seeking(DMG p225)(+1 bonus)
Negates the Miss Chance due to Concealment, Blur, etc. The attack must be aimed at a hex containing a creature to work(i.e., it cannot find random Invisible foes in the battlefield).

Hideaway(RotW p171)(+7500gp)
As a Free Action, the weapon transforms into a cylinder small enough to fit in the wielder’s hand (+2 Circumstance bonus to Sleight of Hand checks to conceal it). The weapon can be restored to its normal size as a Free Action.

the nice thing about this Bow.... it is not normally apparent that you are armed... since you are only holding a small cylinder that you can hide in your hand..... but it is a Free Action to transform it into a Bow and Back .... that way after you fire your Arrows, you can make it small again and less likely to be the Target of a Sunder attempt..... the best part is :
it allows you to Ignore Cover and Concealment
this makes you much more accurate.... for a cheaper version... lose the "Hideaway feature"

if you want to focus on Damage.... try this:

23100gp +1 Sacred Magebane Mighty(+4 str) Elevencraft Seren Composite longbow

Magebane(CArc p143)(+1 bonus)
Against any creature that casts Arcane spells or has Arcane spell-like abilities, the weapon gains an extra +2 attack bonus & does an extra +2d6 damage.

Sacred(libris Mortis or BoED)(+1 bonus)
Upon command, a sacred weapon is sheathed in luminous positive energy. This energy does not harm the wielder unless it is undead, in which case it takes 1 point of Charisma damage per round it holds the weapon when it is so energized. The effect remains until another command is given. A sacred weapon deals an extra 1d6 points of damage to undead (or 2d6 against evil outsiders) on a successful hit. Bows, crossbows, and slings so crafted bestow the positive energy upon their ammunition. The weapon is also treated as being good-aligned (for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction) when sheathed in positive energy.

another fun Bow is this:

19100gp +1 Force Mighty(+4 str) Elevencraft Composite longbow

Force(MIC)(+2 Bonus)
Allows all attacks made by this weapon to do Force Damage

a very nice addition to any bow.... is Serren Wood:

Serren Wood(BoED p38)+4,000 gp
Arrows & bolts made from Serren wood gain the Ghost-Touch property as an Exceptional (i.e., non-magical) ability Bows made from Serren wood grant the Ghost-Touch property to their ammo as an Exceptional ability.

I considered this, but if you can use the Gloves of the Master Strategist from Ghostwalk, they are better. You can stow/retrieve the weapon as a free action with them, also, and you can continue to use the gloves if you get a new bow. They're also cheaper. (Ridiculously cheap, since they are improved Gloves of Storing, but cost less :P ).

If you want another item for the glove slot (I wanted Gloves of Object Reading), I could see going with this instead, though.

I wound up not taking either the Gloves of the Master Strategist, or this enhancement, due to money constraints. Also, I'll be flying most of the time and have some dimensional travel powers, and so hopefully can keep my bow out of harm's way just by being mobile. That's the main reason I see for using these kinds of things. You can hide the bow in between volleys, and so make it untargetable for Sunder/Dispels.

Also, with the Elvencraft bows, if you stow it in between volleys, it prevents you from using it to make AoOs. Not a big deal, but something to consider.

for a Planescape type campaign based in Sigil .... Evil Outsider Bane is not too bad either

You have an unerring ability to make me wistful for campaigns of old, Carnivore. I don't mean to hijack, so I will offer up my own little touch.

Belt of Healing over Wand of CLW:
More useful longer into your expected lifespan. If you have a free belt slot, you should have this or the belt of battle.
2xLesser Glyph Seal:
Holds any spell of 2nd level or less? How about you get to pretend to be an arcane archer? Arrow of grease? Maybe an arrow of entangle? Good as traps, alarms, buff containers (your belt is non-living)... Really just a great item at 1k each.

But my big silly contribution...
Dust of Disappearance
Now, it's a nice item, if expensive... But unlike the normal dusts, it just says any creature touched by it. Just keep a pouch of it and stick your hand in when you want to go invisible. Reasonable that it might have limited uses this way, but talk to your GM.

Oh! And don't forget the Aggressive Trait! Always worth it. +2 init for -1 AC.
