| #1userwithnonameMar 29, 2009 18:39:28 | I submit this to the optimization board. Our setting have VERY low arcane magic (it's totally unstable) but divine work (altough people are warry of it). the GM has tweaked the monsters accordingly of course. What it mean : We don't have a easy access to magic weapon and enhancing items. We won't use anything from 3rd party publishing. No dragon or dungeon magazine. GM is somewhat flexible with request from official books. Group have a cleric, fighter and monk. I'm s'pose to be the skill Monkey i guess. We are starting at level 1, but I'll give you the full 1-20 progression I planned. My built is as follow : Hobgoblin Rogue 19 / Monk 1 Stats (Including the racial mods, Base in parenthesis) : Str 16, Dex 20(16), Con 14(11), Int 14, Wis 10, Cha 10 (Stat increase for levels were : Con, Str, Str, Dex, Dex) Feats (I will skip the class feature here) 1- Improved Initiative 1- (Monk Bonus) Improved Grapple 3- (Monk Level) Ascetic Rogue (Complete Adventurer) 3- Decisive Striker monk option (PHB2) 6- Versatile Unarmed Strike (PHB 2) 9- Quick Reconnoiter (Complete Adventurer) 12- Improved Criticals (Unarmed Strike) 15- [Don't know yet] 18- [Don't know yet] At level 20, the BaB is 14, so only 3 attack per round (Same I would get as a pure rogue) Unarmed at level 20 will be 2d10 (thanks to the "ascetic rogue" feat) As far as I can understand, "Decesive Striker" work while armored. I prefer using armor instead of putting points in wisdom (wich would only be AC and will since I won't use stunning fist). That is about all I can think of putting here. I'm open to suggestion to tweak the character (gear ain't tweaks by the way, they're crotch). I kinda like the style he could have, but I have some reseve on how potent he could be. Thank in advance for any insight and/or suggestion. Flame are ok, but stay polite :p Game on ! |
| #2jameswilliamogleMar 29, 2009 19:51:01 | My flaming: Play something w/ SLAs or Su abilities instead, or if they are totally forbidden play a Druid or Cleric. My questions: What books are you allowed, and what does the rest of the party look like? Your feat selection isn't that great... Some other commentary: It looks like you can use core, completes, and PHB 2, so I'll go with that... Here's some strategies that you can use in low-magic games: If you can use Book of Exalted Deeds, you can use Vow of Poverty, which is an excellent option. Shocktrooper's Headless Charge is VERY powerful with Power Attack and Leap Attack - essentially, get full PA damage at no penalty to hit. TWF / Rapid Shot / Brutal Throw works well in conjunction with acid flasks and other touch-attack alchemical offenses. Particularly useful w/ a Hide in Plain Sight option. Splashing Rogue and going mainline warrior (Fighter, Barb) isn't a bad idea at all. Weapon Focus and Specialization is REALLY useful, as is high BAB. Ultimately, I recomend against doing the Rogue 19 / Monk 1. Its cool to combine the two, but go ahead and go to some of the good Monk cutoff points (Monk 2, 6, 11). Also, get at least 4 levels of full BAB near the end, just in case you end up going into epic levels, as you need +16 BAB for 4 iterative attacks by 20th level. Ascetic Rogue helps you out there (or, do Ninja 2, Monk 18, with the CScoundrel feat that combines some of the two class features). Also, in my sig is a "super team" link to core-only low-powered groups that might be useful for you - the second post has non-primary casters. |
| #3userwithnonameMar 29, 2009 21:13:21 | I don't know what "SLAs" mean, but I picked hobgoblin for flavor mostly. The setting has goblinoids and orcs as a common race. I was planning a greedy, power hungry scoundrel and hobgoblin seemed to fit that ;) Some good idea tough in that post. I didn't look at "vow of povrety", but it could make for a fun character. And it does work with the low-magic setting. Thanks for the input mate ! |
| #4gorfnad_the_shiznitMar 29, 2009 23:57:57 | I don't know what "SLAs" mean, but I picked hobgoblin for flavor mostly. The setting has goblinoids and orcs as a common race. I was planning a greedy, power hungry scoundrel and hobgoblin seemed to fit that ;) SLA = Spell Like Ability For the following builds all you really need is daggers Rogue 3/ Monk 2/ Swashbuckler 3/ Invisible Blade 5/ Master Thrower 2/ Duelist 5 With Carmendine Monk feat nets you Int mod to AC x3 This is a simple build I've used with Human Rogues 1. Rogue - Craven, Point Blank Shot 2. Rogue 3. Rogue - Precise Shot 4. Swashbuckler -B: Weapon Finesse 5. Swashbuckler 6. Swashbuckler - Two Weapon Fighting 7. Fighter - B: Weapon Focus: Dagger 8. Fighter - B: Far Shot 9. Fighter - Improved Two Weapon Fighting 10. Fighter - B: Weapon Specialization Dagger 11. Invisible Blade 12. Invisible Blade - Combat Reflexes 13. Invisible Blade 14. Invisible Blade 15. Invisible Blade - Greater Two Weapon Fighting 16. Master Thrower - B: Quick Draw 17. Master Thrower 18. Master Thrower - Rapid Shot 19. Master Thrower - B: Snatch Arrows 20. Master Thrower Otherwise for straight melee I would go for Rogue 3/ Swashbuckler 3/ Monk 2/ Invisible Blade 5/ Warblade 2/ Bloodclaw Master 5 Also any of the Daring Outlaw builds on the Char-Op board would probably work for you as well. |
| #5hsienMar 30, 2009 7:16:28 | I played something similar to what gorfnad spelled out, but with a few differences. Also in a low magic-item campaign and was battle-field control and damage dealer wrapped into one. Major difference is that instead of Invis Blade, I maxed out MT to 5 and with addt'l levels in either Rogue or Swashbuckler. Why MT 5; MT Tricks Deadly precision or Deadeye shot (I forget) Increase crit multiplier by 1, so daggers are x3 then Ranged Trip, greate for battlefield control as they do damage then trip check MT5 Weak Spot, give up strength to use targets Touch AC Ancient Red Dragon? No problem, he's Touch AC is what...6? Recommended feats: Telling Blow; apply SA on crits; a must for dagger thrower imo to allow for full attacks and let TB get SA. Does not add addt'l SA dice if already getting SA from something else, such as flanking, denied dex etc... it's juts another trigger for the SA dice pool. Ranged Wpn Mastery: +2 hit/+2 damage (stackls w/ Wpn Focus & Wpn Spec )and + 20' to range increment. Forget Far shot ( unless you are going Invis Blade ) Daring Outlaw: Stack Rogue & Swash for SA dice Note: If you have access to ToB, check out SwordSage, Shadowhand disipline Assassins Stance (+2d6 SA) and theres feat that adds Dex to damage., can't recall name. |
| #6qosheaMar 30, 2009 7:24:44 | If you stick with the monk, don't forget about Improved Natural Attack from the Monster Manual. It will improve your monk damage. |
| #7dr_rocktopusMar 30, 2009 7:34:06 | Alternatively, there's a class called swordsage... ![]() VoP Swordsages->Unarmed combat->The Naked&Angry build. |
| #8darkpawnMar 30, 2009 8:21:35 | I don't know what "SLAs" mean, but I picked hobgoblin for flavor mostly. The setting has goblinoids and orcs as a common race. I was planning a greedy, power hungry scoundrel and hobgoblin seemed to fit that ;) The two bold prints are kind of contradictory though. If you want to be greedy it is kind of the polar opposite of vow of poverty. Bravo on race pick though, I love goblinoids and wish more people would play them. What is the 1 level of monk for again? |
| #9hijaxxMar 30, 2009 8:26:08 | skill monkey, eh? a one-level dip into factotum+able learner will net you effectively all skills as class skills(cost one skill point/rank, max=ECL+3). youll have to be human, though. |
| #10dr_rocktopusMar 30, 2009 9:04:02 | +1 on approval of hobgoblins +1 on worries about contradictions in VoP versus greed. |
| #11phaedrusxyMar 30, 2009 12:51:27 | I submit this to the optimization board. Our setting have VERY low arcane magic (it's totally unstable) but divine work (altough people are warry of it). the GM has tweaked the monsters accordingly of course. Cast Magic Weapon or Greater Magic Weapon. They're both core cleric spells. In fact, cleric is one of the strongest classes to play in a low magic/low wealth game, because of their self-buffing capabilities. Druid is also very strong, for the same reason, but your AC will likely stink compared to the cleric's. |
| #12userwithnonameMar 30, 2009 21:27:04 | Tons of nice input here ;) And I do know that greedy and vow of povrety won't mix well ;) But still, a "Vow of Povrety hobgoblin rogue" would probably make the GM choke haha And the 1 level of monk is to get the Unarmed damage improvement that come with the "ascetic Rogue" feat. With versatile unarmed strike it let you do any kind of damage (slash, bludgeon or piercing). I know for sure the factotum will be out of bound for class choice. Sad but I have to agree with the GM on this, it look like one of them cheesed up class the devs made when they were out of idea. And yes ! Cleric buffs are godly ! (how can it be otherwise haha) I might be a bit purist here, but I tend to prefer builts with few mix. A main class with a couple level to spice it. On the other hand, my GM may partly be to blame ;) You don't just become a pretige class. You have to find a teacher for it. So when there are 4 or 5 prestige class involved in a built, it make things darn near impossible. Altough it would provide adventure hooks. By the way, the "craven" feat, where is that from ? I can't seem to find it in my lists. Again, thanks for the comments, I'll look into the various venues that have opened here ;) Game On ! |
| #13gorfnad_the_shiznitMar 30, 2009 23:53:37 | By the way, the "craven" feat, where is that from ? I can't seem to find it in my lists. Craven is from Champions of Ruin |
| #14EricaGMar 31, 2009 1:24:30 | I've played a fighter/ninja (CAdv) into stonedeath assassin (RoS) and had a great time. Good skill list/points if you're the skill monkey. With that increase your dex, wis, int, so you always have good ac, not just when wearing armor, esp if magic armor will be difficult to find. and all these stats have good synergy, see x to y bonus thread. |
| #15dr_rocktopusMar 31, 2009 4:17:58 | Are.... Are kensai allowed by happy happenschance? |
| #16grifter730_dupMar 31, 2009 13:33:14 | Darkstalker feat from Lords of Madness is a must-have, even more so in a low-magic setting. |
| #17userwithnonameMar 31, 2009 18:19:32 | Darkstalker is indeed a nice feat. Worth looking into it ;) But since the number of feats I can take is limited, choices (hard choices) has to be made... Kensai should be allowed. Guess it all depend on how the GM interpret the signature weapon powers. Some interesting powers, but overall it doesn't tempt me. Maybe it's just the way I look at it. Who knows !?! Certainly not me. |
| #18dr_rocktopusMar 31, 2009 18:38:30 | It's true, Kensai's not a caster. :: laughing warmly :: It is pretty famously excellent in low magic situations, but I'm not sure I'd make it my go-to. Here, I'd probably try to play a cleric or something with divine casting. But really, truly, my go-to for low magic settings is the Tome of Battle. In a world without arcane magic, they become truly phenomenal instead of just lovable and would-be-casters. Flavor, power, style, and an opportunity to use your class features outside of combat as a non-caster? |
