Hello all,
I am joining a campaign that has the 3.5 SRD only and no useful magic items.
From what I understand ther are no stat increase items and the magic items in the game are equivelan to +1 and the characters are 9th level.

I was thinking of a Druid or Wizard.

Any advice to building a strong character is appreceiated since I have not played 3.5 D&D for a few years.

If it's (essentially) Core only, with little to no magic items, then your best bets are (pretty much in order) Druid, Cleric, Wizard, Psion, Psychic Warrior.

Are the crafting feats available?

Also: Cleric, Druid, Wizard would all do just fine.

What are your ability scores like? Point buy? How much money do you have to work with, standard wealth by level?

If it's core only I'd put psion first, because it's the only that has powers with "manifesting time: Immediate action" in SRD. That's a lifes saver. Also psionics rely less on magic items than other classes. That's my opinion at least.

Any caster or manifester will likely be better off. If you wanted to play melee you're probably best off with a Rogue or Monk, but Druid or Wizard are good choices.

How common are things like scrolls and potions going to be? You could always go with a Wiz/Druid/Mystic Theurge if they're going to be rare at all. If scrolls are particularly rare, though, a pure Sorcerer (or maybe a Cleric/Sorc/MT) might be better than a Wizard.

Personally my inclination would be Druid. If your party is lacking melee strength, having a character with a decent hit dice and a medium BAB could be useful. The Druid could also use Wild Shape and has an animal companion along with a decent selection of defensive spells, so certainly has some combat presence, and is probably one of the more self-sufficient characters.
