| #1cjrodgersAug 16, 2013 11:30:05 | When I was reading through their respective books while building a Spellthief / Wizard / Ultimate Magus for a new campaign my friend is running, I noticed something rather interesting. The expanded spell knowledge feature of Ultimate Magus states that you can give your spontaneous spellcasting class a single spell from your known wizard spells each time you get the ability, up to level 5 at the 5th time you get it. It specifically says you can teach your spontaneous spellcaster class this spell even if they aren't a high enough level to cast it. Now, generally, this is a completely useless effect, teaching a class a spell that exceeds its spellcasting slots. However, you then look at the spellcasting qualities of a spellthief. A spellthief may use stolen spell levels to cast any spell that it has learned. This isn't exactly game breaking, as the minimum level you would need to be to go past your spellthief limits is 15th level with a ST 4 / Wi 3 / UM 8 for a fourth level spell, due to Spellthief needing to be a spontaneous caster and also needing 2nd level prepared spells. At this progression a spellthief would never get 4th level spells, unless you for whatever reason decide to put more levels into your spellthief list when deciding ultimate magus increases. Then at UM10 or level 17, you can teach your spellthief a single 5th level spell. So long as you steal the spells from an enemy (or steal a bunch of level 1 spells if you want this to be a buff that you persistent spell), you can cast that spell, exceeding your spell range. Any thoughts? |
