| #1bulwerMar 02, 2009 1:29:25 | I'm looking to build and play a Dexterity-based Finessing Barbarian, possibly dipping into Fighter2 and Swashbuckler1 for the feats, and replacing almost all of the Barbarian class features. Rage, Indomitable Will, and Tireless Rage go away, replaced with Ferocity, from the Cityscape Web Enhancement. This makes it boost Dex instead of Con, and several other useful additions, including being able to go into Ferocity as an immediate action. DR goes away. Replace it with Streetfighter from the same link. Fast Movement becomes Pounce, courtesy of Complete Champion's Lion Totem. Full attack after a charge? Yes please. Trap Sense becomes Trapkiller from Dungeonscape. I find 'em, and then I HITS 'em. I get to keep Uncanny Dodge, Improved Uncanny Dodge, and Illiteracy. Now, my base stats are 18,17,17,15,15,13, and after distributing them appropriately and adding the Air Goblin's -2STR +4DEX -2CON, you get this: 15/22/15/15/13/15. Barring any other suggestions, I think I'll go with a Rapier for a weapon. Power Attack still works for double if I attack with the rapier in both hands, since it is a one-handed weapon. No 1.5STR to damage, though. Nobody say "spiked chain" in this thread, or I'll stab them in the eye. I'm so deadly serious about this that I just stabbed myself in the eye. I've got 17 levels of barbarian in this, ideally, and 3 of something else. I was thinking Swashbuckler early on, and 2 levels of Fighter if we need the feats for the build, or 2 of something else if not. Since I will be playing this from level 1, I'm unsure whether to start with Swashbuckler or Barbarian. Either one works with the fluff I'm working on. What do you guys think of the idea? I think it's workable, if not strictly optimal, and could be really fun to play. I plan to work on (and take skill tricks and feats to enhance) Intimidate, especially in battle. I love the idea of the little goblin jumping into a crowd and making them all cower. Many of these ideas are from the excellent Consolidated Barbarian Handbook. EDIT: Actually, 5th level, so level choice should be based only on benefit starting there. |
| #2cruMar 02, 2009 4:27:33 | I wonder why 17 levels of barbarian. If you take 17 levels, why not three more for the best rage? OTOH, if you dip, why not dip some more? You might need dex to damage. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=320889 You're small, you can capitalize on that. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=633443 |
| #3bulwerMar 02, 2009 4:50:53 | Relentless Ferocity: At 17th level, the duration of his ferocity increases to 6 + his Constitution modifier (if positive), and he no longer become sickened at the end of his ferocity. In addition, the dodge bonus granted by his shifting stance ability becomes +2. That's why I need 17 levels. The question is: Is there something better to take with them than Swashbuckler and Fighter? For Dex to damage, looks like my best bet is the Fierce enhancement. It lets you Power Attack using your Dex bonus to AC, essentially. +2 bonus, so that's an issue. |
| #4carnivoreMar 02, 2009 4:52:01 | interesting idea... but i dont think i would use the Air Goblin..... try this: use this: Warforged Scout(MM3 p193) +2 Dex, –2 Str, –2 Wis, –2 Cha Fav Class: Rogue • Living Construct • Immune to Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Disease,Nausea, Fatigue, Exhaustion, Sickening, and Energy Drain. • Does not Eat, Sleep, or Breath. • Does not naturally heal. • At 0 hp, is Disabled (as usual). From –1 to –9 hp, is Inert (i.e., Unconscious, but stable) • Conj(healing) spells only heal ½ hp. • Can be ‘healed’ by a Craft check that takes 8 hours. The Warforged is repaired the check – 15 hp. It is possible to ‘Take 10’, but not ‘Take 20’. The following Craft skills can be used: armorsmithing, blacksmithing, gemcutting, & sculpting. A Warforged may repair itself. This check cannot be done untrained(EbErrata) • Small size • 20’ movement • +2 Armor bonus to AC, but 5% Arcane failure chance • Light Fortification – 25% chance of Critical Hit or Sneak Attack bonus damage being negated. • Natural weapons provide a 1d3 Slam attack. this way after your Ferocity... you wont be Sickened ;) :D |
| #5bulwerMar 02, 2009 5:39:56 | Actually, I still will be, just at -1 as opposed to -2: the text specifically says so. I also gain living construct goodness, armor and fortification, as well as 2 points of Con. However, I lose 2 points of Dex, 10 feet of move speed, Darkvision, and the Move Silently bonus. More importantly, I lose setting neutrality: the Goblin on a pirate ship is normal anywhere, but not the robot. |
| #6carnivoreMar 02, 2009 5:48:11 | actually the text: "Abilities that normally render him immune to being sickened (such as the Strong Stomach feat, Cityscape 64) reduce the penalties to -1, but do not remove them entirely." is not refering to Racial Traits... rather it is refering to ""Abilities" acquired from Class levels(Class Abilities) or Feats(as per Example) but if you want to stay as an Air Goblin.... then i would suggest this: dont Multiclass into any Base classes... Goblins have Rogue as Fav Class... just take something else for the last 3 levels :D |
| #7bulwerMar 02, 2009 6:29:28 | I'm going to ignore multiclass penalty for now and see if I need those three feats that I can get. 1. Barbarian 1: Power Attack. Straightforward, and it gets me full HP. 2. Swashbuckler 1: Weapon Finesse. d10 hit die, and I want to frontload this with goodies. 3. Fighter 1: 2 feats here, and one's a fighter feat. Which ones? 4. Fighter 2: Fighter feat! 5. Barbarian 2: Uncanny Dodge What should I take for my 3rd level feat and 2 fighter feats? Extra Rage is a frontrunner. EDIT: What about Dodge and Mobility, then Spring Attack at 6th? It certainly fits the look I want for my character, and I can take Leap Attack at 9. 12 and up are free for further suggestions, as is 3 if there's something better than Extra Rage. What if Bounding Assault was the 12th level feat? That's one more hit on Spring Attack. How about squeezing Combat Reflexes and Robilar's Gambit in? Reckless Rage makes up my loss of 20th-level rage-esque capstone. |
| #8thespianusMar 02, 2009 9:50:05 | Barring any other suggestions, I think I'll go with a Rapier for a weapon. Power Attack still works for double if I attack with the rapier in both hands, since it is a one-handed weapon. No 1.5STR to damage, though. I believe that is a literal RAW-reading that doesn't mesh with RAI, IMHO. I believe the intention was to say that the Rapier is not wieldable with two hands. But I'm no expert. ![]() It's very difficult to perform a two-handed attack with a rapier and as a DM I wouldn't allow it. |
| #9EndarireMar 02, 2009 11:57:12 | See my Hood for inspiration. |
| #10endaliaMar 02, 2009 12:08:45 | Don't go rapier! Go Spi... right, you didn't want that. So go Elven Courtblade or something instead. Perfectly RAW Finesseable two-handed weapon. Requires EWP though... which is kinda bad... but Elven Courtblade should be better, and more according to RAW, than a rapier. |
| #11bulwerMar 02, 2009 19:46:06 | What feat progression would any of you go with for rapier (assume it works), or Elven Courtblade? At level 5, I'll have my level 1 and 3 feats, Weapon Finesse, and 2 Fighter feats. |
| #12bulwerMar 06, 2009 11:40:05 | Is a Spring Attack build viable? The progression is as follows: 1: (Barb) Power Attack 2: (Swas) Weapon Finesse 3: (Figh) Dodge, Mobility 4: (Figh) Spring Attack 5: (Barb) - EDIT: If I go Hadozee (this is a seafaring campaign), I get Dodge for free, which frees up room for EWP: Elven Whateverblade. |
| #13sofawallMar 07, 2009 11:04:20 | I personally recommend Spiked Chain. |
| #14keithioMar 07, 2009 11:15:01 | I personally recommend Spiked Chain. lulz |
| #15bulwerMar 07, 2009 17:51:48 | I personally recommend Spiked Chain. I would like to personally thank the CO boards, as well as you in particular, for all of your help. Watch your eyes, man. |
| #16destined_infamyMar 08, 2009 3:14:25 | hehe, reminds me of my first small character, Gleewurp, the Eyebiter whats the main thing you're going for here? Just a dex-based rager? Looks like you're focussing on charges... Presently I'm playing a Warblade 3/Fighter 2/Master Thrower 2/Bloodstorm Blade 7/about to dip barbarian for pounce, weilding a +1 Keen Transmuting Scythe, giving me some decent crits (x5 crits + leap attack, power attacking for max BAB thanks to the cleric's brilliant blade). I know, not completely optimized, but just an idea to add on to what you're going for. If you don't need 17 barbarian levels (ferocity till the end of the encounter), then a 4 level dip in BB gives you throwing weapons out of whatever weapon you decide to go for, and with your fighter levels should let you gain weapon specialization to boot |
