| #1PramxnimJun 25, 2009 23:30:50 | Cross-posted from Giant in the Playgrounds. Hi there, d20 char ops! I'm in a bit of a pickle here in terms of item selection for a character in a game I'm applying to. Lemme just get the necessary stuff out of the way first: ECL 10, wealth for 14th level (150000gp) I'm using the Archer class from Iron Heroes (a variant 3.5 rulebook), which is significantly more powerful than a Ranger or Fighter in terms of class features alone, along with the feats and skills from that book. I'm only looking for item suggestions, so please don't go off on a tangent concerning feats and such. Starting stats: (including the 2 point bump from leveling up) Str 17 Dex 20 (24 with Gloves) Con 15 Int 16 Wis 16 Cha 15 (I somehow got awesome rolls) Items I have so far: +1 Composite Shortbow (+3 Str) with: Aquatic (+2000gp, just in case), Deadly Precision, Energy Aura (I might cut this to severely cut down on the cost, but it's handy to have) Weapon cost: 52600 +3 Mithral Chain Shirt with: Called (+2000gp, just in case), Nimbleness(to get the max Dexterity bonus) Armour cost: 19250 Gloves of Dex +4: 16000gp Cloak of Resistance +5: 25000gp Anklet of Translocation: 1400gp Torc of Displacement: 2000gp Collar of Umbral Metamorphosis: 10800gp (DM ruled that HiPS does not negate the need for cover or concealment, hence the torc of concealment) Ring of Darkridden: 2000gp, foils darkvision Crystal of Return, Least: 300gp. On bow, for free Quick Draw feat Rogue's Vest: 18000gp, for +1d6 Sneak Attack and a few minor skill bumps Efficient Quiver: 1800gp 2xMasterwork Dagger: 600gp Quick calculations leave me having spent 149750gp (so close!). A few spare gold coins here and there is good and all, but I still need them arrows. Should I get rid of Energy Aura on the Bow (and save 32000gp) and replace them by lots of Bane Arrows and perhaps something else? If so, how many Bane Arrows per type of creature do you recommend, and what other item should I get? Thank you all in advance. PS: I have class features and feats that can already do a lot of things potential suggestions might include, so I'll list them out here to avoid redundancy: - Ignore DR: I can ignore a certain amount of DR already, so Force is an extravagant expenditure. - Ignore Concealment: Yep, that's possible too. - Sneak attack: I have sneak attack, and I can also render a foe flat-footed against my attacks using class features. - Damage is not really a concern, since I get Dex and Str to damage (along with item bonuses), but more is always nice. |
| #2sofawallJun 26, 2009 0:59:55 | Sorry for my tangent discussion of feats, but do you have a free slot? If so, take True Believer (Ehlonna) and grab Raptor Arrows, from the MIC. 6k each, reusable (they come back to you at the start of each round), you'll need one per attack in each round, but they are +1 arrows that Bane everything. |
| #3emyJun 26, 2009 1:26:58 | Sorry for my tangent discussion of feats, but do you have a free slot? This. A thousand times this. As for other items, would it be possible to use a Bow of the Wintermoon as the base item rather than a composite shortbow? I guess that's only useful if your strength is going to change, though. Also, slap a Crystal of Return, Least on your bow, so you can quick draw it without spending a feat. It's not a huge boost, but it only costs around 300g and could be handy at some point. These items are from the Magic Item Compendium. |
| #4WyvernhandJun 26, 2009 2:08:19 | You have no form of Flight. This is bad. Correct it. Wings of Flying or Phoenix Cloak (MIC) are your best bet, although Winged Boots or similar would be ok. You don't want to be grounded, cause thats where all the nastys are, and they want to eat you. You don't want to be eaten, do you? |
| #5sofawallJun 26, 2009 4:49:20 | You have no form of Flight. This is bad. Correct it. If possible, a UMD item of Phantom Steed is fun. Expensive as hell, to get the higher caster level, but fun. And ****ing fast. |
| #6PramxnimJun 26, 2009 5:56:45 | Ah, sorry, can't worship Ehlonna. The game is set so that the characters work for an upstart god who wishes to expand his influence and destroy other gods (Forgotten Realms setting). I'll probably get Winged Boots, thanks for the suggestion. Crystal of Return, Least is already on the list, but thanks anyways ![]() |
| #7lormadorJun 26, 2009 7:21:47 | What's our UMD situation here? Any spells on the class list? |
| #8PramxnimJun 26, 2009 7:59:40 | Class has no spells. Not planning on UMDing, I'll leave that to the Mages in the party. I got the Phoenix Cloak from MIC (Fly speed = land speed, perfect maneuverability) for flight capabilities. Thanks to all those who have helped out, I think I've got it all settled now. Further suggestions are always welcome, but I may not respond again if I don't decide to use them. |
| #9meyerwilliamJun 26, 2009 9:09:38 | Class has no spells. Not planning on UMDing, I'll leave that to the Mages in the party. bracers of archery (or greater version) from DMG for handy bonus to hit/damage |
| #10gilfalas_elaandrinJun 26, 2009 9:19:22 | You forgot the Splitting enchantment from Champions of Ruin. Basically doubles your bow shots. Think again about getting the Force add on for the bow. It removes the need for arrows, ignores DR (which you can partially do naturally) AND Energy Resistance but also automatically hits ethereal and out of phase targets as a force effect. Also if your thinking of cutting energy aura to save costs, replace it with Screaming. It is a d6 Damage Sonic and will hit most everything you could ever want. If you have access to the D&D Cartoon sourcebook try to start with the base bow in there which allows you, basically, to get all your Str bonus on damage and to use power shot at will (Power Attack for a bow basically). Also I really like the Sacred effect from MIC. It is a +1 effect that adds 1d6 on Undead, 2d6 on evil outsiders and gives the good descriptor. Not shabby for a +1. |
| #11PramxnimJun 26, 2009 10:36:20 | Unfortunately I'll be on the Evil side of the spectrum this time :D. Splitting is very expensive and kinda cheesy, so I don't wanna go there. I'll finagle with the DM if I get in and if it turns out I'm being overshadowed by the others. I'll reconsider adding Force. Not sure if I want to Power Attack with a bow though. I'm more a Dex character. |
| #12aramasJun 26, 2009 10:42:11 | Power Shot isn't Str based... it just functions like Power Attack. You take a penalty to hit to get a bonus to damage. If you can get the Energy Bow from the Animated Series Handbook you should definitely do so. It's probably the best base bow out there. |

I'll finagle with the DM if I get in and if it turns out I'm being overshadowed by the others. Fair enough. If no splitting think about Haste. And with the 'power shot' is basically -1 to hit for evey +1 Damage but is is an ability of the bow so you don't NEED Power Attack the feat. Add in a charged item of 'Quickened True Shot X times/day' and you can get some impressive Sniper shots in should you need to. RAW I believe it would work with all the arrows of Multishot as well, since it is one attack roll. As for the 'Sacred' ability, it is not 'Holy' and as such does not carry the penalty of a negative level when evil wields it, IIR. Should be no problem for your evil character to use. If you can get the Energy Bow from the Animated Series Handbook you should definitely do so. It's probably the best base bow out there. Does anyone know the exact name of that Handbook? |
| #14PramxnimJun 26, 2009 12:30:07 | Rawrs. It can be found online here. Don't think I need true strike really, I've got enough to hit bonuses already. |
| #15fisharewetJun 26, 2009 12:48:39 | If you don't need to the hit, Power Attack lets you turn that attack into damage. |
| #16gorfnad_the_shiznitJun 26, 2009 16:27:07 | Here is a quiver to look intoTaken from The Lone Drow: Companions of the Hall |
| #17PramxnimJun 26, 2009 22:06:16 | That quiver sounds delightful, but a bit too expensive for my budget. DM also ruled out the energy bow (said he didn't want me firing lasers lol) so that's not an option either. In fact... I think I've got it all under wraps now. Thank you for all your support, now let's let this thread die in peace. |
| #18jaronkJun 26, 2009 22:36:18 | Bracers of Archery would let you use a Composite Greatbow instead of a Composite Shortbow. Combined with Strongarm Bracers, this would be a significant damage boost for a very insignificant cost. There's a helm in MiC IIRC that grants Far Shot as a bonus feat, so that would be useful too. | #19sofawallJun 27, 2009 3:04:36 | Is the Energy Bow people keep talking about a Unique Weapon? I seem to recall something about Hank's Energy Bow, which to me screams unique (having a name and all), but I've only seen the web article. Remember, unique items cannot be further upgraded. |
| #20aramasJun 27, 2009 10:32:50 | The Energy Bow (aka Hank's Energy Bow) is a specific weapon, not a unique weapon. IIRC the MIC has rules for upgrading specific weapons and armor. The actual name of the bow is Energy Bow, people just call it Hank's Energy Bow because the character in the show that wields it is Hank. The actual name of the source book it comes from is the Animated Series Handbook. It's a small book that comes with a special edition of the animated series DVD set. |

It's not really a unique, you can craft it |
