| #1liquid150Sep 09, 2008 9:55:58 | Please advise. May assume the "spy" role, as they partook in a short session without me where they killed many warforged and a follower of the Lord of Blades. |
| #2bauglirSep 09, 2008 10:33:37 | This may be of use to you in your quest. I don't blame you for not reading them, though, since they aren't Stickied anymore. |

Posting guidelines???? Constructive help will be appreciated, but so far I've been met with pretty much no advice. All I've gotten is direction to a different forum, and this pointless link. There isn't any background info. The game is just beginning. I am looking for build advice. I'm not looking for advice on how or where to post on a game forum. |
| #4iconoplastSep 09, 2008 12:24:11 | What are these? Posting guidelines???? This is pretty much the opposite of how to ask for help. |
| #5liquid150Sep 09, 2008 12:28:30 | This is pretty much the opposite of how to ask for help. You should change your forums handle to "peanut gallery." |
| #6iconoplastSep 09, 2008 13:05:37 | OK, you're right - I could have been more helpful when I said "the opposite of how you ask for help." I've taken a deep breath and am going to explain, slowly, what I meant:Please advise. What is this post lacking? 1. Books allowed 2. Party composition - "they killed" - who? 3. Build Goals - may assume "spy" role - meaning what? Diviner? Chameleon? Jason Bourne ass-kicking? What does killing warforged have to do with this? 4. What level are you starting at? 5. What levels are you likely to play through? After your first post, which didn't give enough information for you to be helped, you were linked to a guide on "how to ask for help with a build." You described this as "pretty much no advice." Where your first post didn't give any information about what kind of help you need, your second just made it seem as though you resented not getting the help/attention to which you feel entitled. And that second post is the one that's going to make people less inclined to take the time to try and figure out what the best build is for you to play in the specific campaign you're in, and more inclined to just look at the next thread. That's what I meant by "the opposite of how you ask for help". |
| #7bauglirSep 09, 2008 13:21:54 | What are these? Posting guidelines???? Help us help you. We'll only be able to help you with some specific information. Your original post was rather vague, and many people don't like to read a post, come up with a possible build, spend a while making sure it all works, and then get told, "Nope, we're starting at a lower level than that," "Nope, the party already has someone like that", "Nope, that class isn't allowed", or even "Nope, I don't like that." Also, your last post having been rather insulting, it's very unlikely that you'll get the aid you're after. You're talking to people whose only incentive to help you is their own sense of good will. We're not your employees. We tend to be pretty decent, though; I even gave you the benefit of the doubt with regards to reading the posting guidelines, because they're very difficult to find these days if you're not specifically looking for them. But now I'm confident you wouldn't have read them anyway, even if they were at the top of the forum in huge, glowing, red letters with a flashing arrow that dominates half the screen pointing at them. |
| #8liquid150Sep 09, 2008 13:21:56 | OK, you're right - I could have been more helpful when I said "the opposite of how you ask for help." I've taken a deep breath and am going to explain, slowly, what I meant: Ahhhh and here's what I was looking for! An interactive respondent offering much more than a canned "go here." 1. Not sure yet, have not been able to talk to the DM personally regarding rules options. All I know is we are going 3.5 here. 2. 1 dwarven ranger, 1 dwarven cleric, and 1 half elf rogue make up the party with which i will be playing. 3. Build goals...nothing specific. When I said spy, I meant I am considering acting as a spy for the Lord of Blades among my party mates, as they partook in a mission (I was absent) the other night where they killed warforged and a follower of the lord of blades. I have been unable to communicate this idea to the DM, so it's all theory. It may be not allowed. 4. Technically level 1, but I think I will be able to roll up to level 2 as I missed an unplanned session they did. 5. As far as we please I imagine. Not entirely sure though. Basically what I'm asking for is general playing advice for optimizing this type of character. Is there anything I should know about a warforged in advance? I know the fundamentals, they are sentient constructs with immunities, resistance to healing, need for repairs, no need for fleshy needs (water, food, air). Is there something that a warforged does better than a fleshling that I might have missed from the fundamentals? Bear in mind I have a fundamental understanding of the 3.5 ruleset and Eberron campaign setting, but I am no expert. I can build a character numbers-wise. |

| #10bauglirSep 09, 2008 13:54:45 | Apologies, then. I meant it in the spirit of, "Here's the information we need", but I can see how it would come off as "RTFM" instead. That said, I recommend buying potions of Repair Light Damage, since traditional healing is less effective on you. Healing Belts, as always, are a good choice since they don't actually duplicate a spell effect (meaning they aren't, technically, of the Healing subschool, so they still work just fine). This won't be applicable for 2 or 3 levels, but it's something to keep in mind. Also, focusing on Int and Con (in that order) is probably the right choice unless you have something specific in mind, but you probably knew that. |

| #12zarzakSep 09, 2008 14:31:16 | sorry if i came off flippant, I was getting frustrated with the extensive use of links in this online community. Well, to be fair, there was a big "This is not the 3.5 forum go here for 3.5" at the top of the 4.0 forum page .... ![]() For your wizard, many people are of the opinion that unless and elf, specialization is the way to go. Enchantment is generally the weakest school in this regard, with evocation not far behind. Are alternative class features allowed in your campaigns? Dragon magazine? What books do you, personally, have access to? For playing your wizard, like a previous poster mentioned, potions of repair light damage will be useful. One nice thing about a warforged wizard is that you can heal yourself later on with your spells. Though you really shouldn't be taking damage ... That is about all that is special for a warforged wizard. There are several nice handbooks on wizards: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=956548 is one, and it has links to two other great guides in the first post. |
| #13bauglirSep 09, 2008 16:17:15 | I'd actually recommend against memorizing the Repair spells in your two highest levels of spells. Lower levels of spells, you can probably spare, but your two highest are better spent controlling the battlefield, debuffing your opponents, or making opponents save-or-die, so that they can't deal damage to you in the first place. Healing is more of a last-resort "I'm in a situation I can't get out of and I need to last long enough for the fighter to come smash things." sorta thing than something you count on having to do, at least in battle. |
| #14eldarielSep 09, 2008 19:39:42 | Best idea is to just get a Wand once you can afford it. Potions are horribly cost-inefficient. At least get Scrolls if you want one-shot healing (since you're a caster and can use them). I'd just get a Wand though. |

| #16WyvernhandSep 10, 2008 1:31:53 | Wands of Lesser Vigor are still the medium of choice for hp/gp conversion, even for Warforged, but no one in your group can really use them, sans the rogue (if he takes at least 1 rank in UMD and doesn't have a negative cha). Granted, the only time to really use a Lesser Vigor is out of combat when the rogue'll have all day to roll on the wand till it works. I'd also like to second the reading of the guides. People post links to guides because if they had to retype ALL of that advice every time someone asked a question, we'd never come up with new ideas. Even copy/pasting would make for horribly long and disfigured posts. Surely you can see the virtue of the guides. Take special look at Treantmonk20's. Its probably the best written. Logic Ninja's is humorous, and decent for content, but Treantmonk20's has much much more useful info on actually strategies other than spam save/dies till it stops moving. Also, there are a number neato guides on spells, with detailed discriptions on the most noteworthy spells and rankings on all of em. Being a wizard is a big responsibility, and you are only as strong as the weapons you pick. Choose wisely and you'll be loaded for bear, rather than stuck with a rusty pair of scissors. In closing, try coming up with a build of some stuff you think you'd like to have with your wizard. Look for some feats you think will help, or a spell wish list. What prestige classes, if any, will you plan to take? We the community can take that rough idea and forge it into something with a bit of potency. That's generally the best way to get the most favorable results around here. |
| #17liquid150Sep 10, 2008 8:27:27 | Currently I only have a DMG in my possession, but the DM has a few books (not sure which). I have Magic of Eberron in the mail. I also have the Players Guide to Eberron, Eberron Campaign Setting, and Secrets of Xen'Drik in the mail. Found out apparently we're going 28 point buys, not rolling for stats. I come from a min/max background, but I am aware of the dangers of doing this in a PnP game. How do these stats look? 10 Strength 12 Dexterity 14 Constitution 16 Intelligence 10 Wisdom 10 Charisma Skill-wise, maximum ranks most likely in Concentration, Spellcraft and Repair. Any other skills that I might want to consider? Feat-wise, I am a bit at a loss where to begin. Need to get my hands on that damn players handbook, but I had to let a friend use it... |
| #18liquid150Sep 10, 2008 9:08:57 | Okay, the meta-gamer in me just remembered that the maximum increase via wishes / tome usage is +5 and maximum enhancement bonus from items is +6. Might it pay to "odden" up a few stats? |
| #19sjiggieSep 10, 2008 9:58:49 | No because you get 5 stat increases from levels so combine those with the 5 from wishes/tome and you are at an even ability score again |
| #20liquid150Sep 10, 2008 11:49:38 | No because you get 5 stat increases from levels so combine those with the 5 from wishes/tome and you are at an even ability score again but what about the stats that i won't be increasing at level ups? Was planning on keeping the 16 intelligence, but maybe reducing charisma to 9, maybe wisdom too, and pumping the dexterity a little more. |
| #21sjiggieSep 10, 2008 11:53:44 | It is too expensive to get tomes for all your atributes but if you want to pump your dexterity a bit more drop wisdom to 8 and use those points to raise dex to 14. As a wizard you will have a good will save so you don't need wisdom. |
| #22obtusehobbitSep 10, 2008 11:54:36 | Just for a little info a warforged can not use wands of lesser vigor for healing. From FAQ: Does a warforged benefit from the vigor spells in Spell Compendium? Yes, but the warforged would get only half the normal value of fast healing, rounded down. Thus, the lesser vigor spell would be useless to a warforged (fast healing 1 halved, rounded down, is fast healing 0). Vigor or vigorous circle would provide a warforged with fast healing 1, while greater vigor would grant fast healing 2 to the warforged. |
| #23liquid150Sep 10, 2008 12:22:08 | Just for a little info a warforged can not use wands of lesser vigor for healing. Thanks, I was actually aware of this issue. Only spells of the Repair school fully heal warforged, or a paladin's lay on hands. I was planning on relying almost entirely on wand healing at low levels, assuming it's financially feasible. |
| #24zarzakSep 13, 2008 23:24:58 | Currently I only have a DMG in my possession, but the DM has a few books (not sure which). I have Magic of Eberron in the mail. I also have the Players Guide to Eberron, Eberron Campaign Setting, and Secrets of Xen'Drik in the mail. Everything in the 3 core books is online in the srd for free. |

I also have the Players Guide to Eberron, Eberron Campaign Setting, and Secrets of Xen'Drik in the mail. Dangers of min / maxing? There are none if the DM is on his or her toes. :D Point buys suck. He doesn't let you do 4d6 drop low? Try playing a Beguiler if you can find access to the Player's Handbook II. I've never done one but they are flavored towards deception and spying as it is so it should make your "optimizing" a bit easier. They also get more skill points so you can flavor your character even more along the lines of spying than with the wizards $hitty 2 points. Usually you should want at least 1 rank in all the knowledges pertaining to monsters (dungeon, religion, nature, planes), and the skill trick collector of stories (complete scoundrel), so you can have a chance at IDing any monster. I think warforged make decent int based arcane casters with their immunities, and high con, and no hit to int. |
| #26eldarielSep 15, 2008 13:19:01 | 28pb is much stronger than 4d6b3 as 4d6b3 averages at 25pb, and you're unlike to get any 18s with 4d6b3 (and for a Wizard, 18 in Int is worth so much). Not to mention, you absolutely want to have a control over the distribution. I'd go: Str 8 Dex 14 Con 16 Int 18 Wis 6 Cha 6 Unfortunately, that's probably the best you can afford (assuming Warforged). Also, this is assuming you aren't interested in enchantment early on - Charm Person-line would require Charisma. Then again, you're a Warforged so that seems like an epic waste. Anyways, Strength is completely useless for you as you don't even use armor so you'll never face carrying capacity limitations, and that's all Str is good for. Wisdom just feeds your Will-saves which are already quite ok (since they're your primary saves), and Charisma does nothing but keys maybe 3 spells (and with Planar Binding, you can just use Magic to make up for low Cha). |
