acording to players handbook, pg. 59, "If a skill is a class skill for any of a multiclass character’s classes, then character level determines a skill’s maximum rank."

seems like its a dead feat...

Able Learner lets you buy ranks for 1 point instead of 2, since cross class ranks cost 2 skill points to get one rank.

The cost to buy skill ranks is still determined by the class you are currently taking however. If you start with a ranger and get all those yummy skill points at the beginning, then later switch to fighter to grab those extra feats, it will cost you double during your fighter levels to keep your skills maxed (and you probably couldn't do all of them either). For example, let's say my ranger 5 has rank 8 in hide and move silently. All of those ranks cost 1 skill point each. I then pick up two levels of fighter. My max possible skill rank is now 10, but since hide and move silently are cross-class skills for the fighter, it costs me 2 points each to bring each rank up one. So now I'd have to spend 8 points instead of 4 just to keep those skills maxed.

Able Learner becomes a very valuable feat if your multiclassing and PrCs don't have the skills you want.

When you take a new level, the cost for a rank of a class skill is 1 skill point, and double for a cross-class skill. So if you multiclass and want to maintain a cross-class skill, it costs more. Example: a Rogue takes a new level in Fighter, and only gets 2 skill points. If he wants to increase a rank in Tumble, he'll need to spend two points instead of one, even if he already had Tumble as a class skill from Rogue. Able learner is really useful if you start with a class that has a LOT of class skills, or if you want to maintain an exceptionally useful/uncommon one, like Use Magic Device.

Oh, and the real reason to take Able Learner? It's a prerequisite for the Chameleon PrC. :P

Edit: Doh, ninja'ed.

It is. It speaks of the Maximum Ranks. However, it still costs 2 point per rank without Able Learner.

this is the Bottom line

The cost to buy skill ranks is still determined by the class you are currently taking

As an example, a Rogue 1/Rokugan Ninja 1/Unarmed Swordsage 18 might want to be a UMD using Ninja. UMD is only a class skill for Rogue. If he doesn't take Able Learner, it will cost him 45 skill points to max UMD. If he does, it's 23 skill points. Either way the max is the same, but one way is FAR more expensive.

This is more of a rules question then an optimization request... not that I care, but this really shouldn't have been placed in the char op boards. I suppose that most other 3.5 boards are totally dead, but still...
