| #1fricot_1Mar 19, 2008 17:23:48 | I'm working my way through a campaign, which I am a level lower than most of the party (who is steadily approaching level three), and I am playing a Bounty Hunter Wood Elf. The rough and dirty story behind him is that he was a member of the City Guard, until they failed to apprehend a serial killer who escaped town. After tracking him down and eventually killing him he quit the City Guard in the belief he could do better on his own, without their restrictions and formalities. The idea is that since he apprehends the 'wanted' and returns them to the appropriate justice they either escape, or are killed. In the first case, its frustrating. In the second, well, they can become something much much worse. So the extreme way to rid the world of evil-doers is, well, to eat their souls. CN Outsider (Wood Elf) Ranger 1 Str 18, Dex 17, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 15, Cha 11 Feats: Nemesis, Otherworldly, Alertness Ranger Abilities and Racial Abilities: Low Light Vision, Darkvision 60ft., Favoured Enemy (Wanted), Wild Empathy, Track, Elf Weapon Proficiencies Flaws: Vulnerable (-1 AC), Frail (-1HP/level) Traits: Aggressive (+2 Initiative, -1 AC) The basic progression is through four levels of fighter, where I will get the following feats: Ftr 1-Willing Deformity Ftr 2-Deformity (Claws) Ftr 4-Weapon Focus (Claws) Level 3-Improved Natural Attack Thus allowing me to enter Soul Eater 1 at level 6. Is there any easier/faster/more effective way to do this? Thanks Appreciated. |
| #2ChristopherGrovesMar 19, 2008 18:10:32 | As a wood-elf? Shapeshift Druid 1? Cleric 1 w/ hunger domain? Strength Devotion? Animal Devotion? All of those provide natty attacks. |
| #3forrestfire15Mar 19, 2008 18:19:36 | wood elves can't enter. You need to be something other than humanoid (monstrous humanoid is ok). If you have the dragonlance book, maybe you can get a white dragon to make you a white dragonspawn. You get claws and bite, and become a monstrous humanoid. |
| #4aftercrescentMar 19, 2008 18:23:41 | Go elan or warforged. Both are living and make interesting choices. |
| #5x-codesMar 20, 2008 3:35:34 | To the above posters (except the OP): He isn't humanoid. He has the Otherworldly feat, therefore his type is "Outsider." To the OP: Fighter doesn't give you Vile feats as fighter bonus feats. Also, you need to be evil to take Vile feats or to take levels in a Vile PrC (Such as Soul Eater). If you want to be a soul-stealing SoB, buy Thinaun Daggers. Focus on knocking your targets unconcious (subdual damage, paralysis, or sleep effects, drow knockout poison is a good one here) and use the rules for Profession (executioner) to slay them outright without a save once their down for the count, and do it with the Thinaun Dagger so that you can suck their soul into it. Then, return this soul to the local authorities for your reward. A cheap divination spell should reveal that you have the right soul contained within the dagger, and the dagger will remain as proof to the constabulary that the finality of death is genuine for that particular outlaw. There are more cost-effective ways to do this, but those require (high-level) spellcasting. |
| #6aftercrescentMar 20, 2008 3:44:04 | I still say Elan or Warforged make better choices, and they don't waste a feat. Also, he wants the Soul Eater prestige class, not a dagger to capture souls. Actually I would prefer the warforged, they come with a natural attack all packaged in. Full BAB class 5/Soul Eater 10/Warforged Juggernaut 5 sounds like something that'll work well and fit your RP hopes. He never dies (of age, at least). So you can hunt those souls for the rest of |
| #7x-codesMar 20, 2008 3:59:05 | I still say Elan or Warforged make better choices, and they don't waste a feat. It's hardly a waste. Outsider type gives Darkvision (Ex), and thats worth a feat. Also, he wants the Soul Eater prestige class, not a dagger to capture souls. Read my post, he can't qualify for Soul Eater the way he wants to. Thats why I gave the alternative. |
| #8paradox-of-lifeMar 20, 2008 3:59:25 | stuff You'd think that once the they're dead, the authorities wouldn't care much. Also, an ear or head works just as well. @op- I Think you should go with Elan, for rapidstrike. |
| #9x-codesMar 20, 2008 4:01:22 | You'd think that once the they're dead, the authorities wouldn't care much. Also, an ear or head works just as well. Then barter the soul to demons in exchange for more reward money. The idea that theres no use for a soul in D&D is only present in good-aligned agnostics. ![]() |
| #10aftercrescentMar 20, 2008 4:03:43 | It's hardly a waste. Outsider type gives Darkvision (Ex), and thats worth a feat. When so many races get it for free? No, it's not worth a feat. I know he can't qualify for soul eater the way he wants. That's why I suggested a different build that still lets him use the PrC he wants. |
| #11x-codesMar 20, 2008 6:27:43 | When so many races get it for free? No, it's not worth a feat. No, not that many. Half-Orcs and Dwarves are the only PHB races that get it. Orcs, Goblins, and Kobolds have it in the MM. Upwards of 80% of the remaining races that grant Darkvision also have LA. |
| #12tshernMar 20, 2008 7:01:05 | Otherworldy gives you other nice goodies as well, including endless possibilities of polymorph abuse. |
| #13fricot_1Mar 20, 2008 14:26:18 | So... for a Warforged my basic build would look like: Warforged Ranger 1/ Fighter 4/ SE... With Feats at level 1 being: Mithral Body(1), Nemesis (Flaw), Weapon Focus(Slam)(Flaw) The progression would go something like... Combat Expertise (Ftr1), Improved Trip (Ftr2), Alertness (Level 3), Improved Natural Attack (Slam) (Ftr4), Improved Fortification (Level 6) Edit: Do natural attacks increase with Base Attack Bonus? I thought they did, but I am reading the feat "Second Slam" and it would seem pointless if they did. If they don't, it should replace Improved Fortification. Also, would Two Weapon Fighting/ Improved Two Weapon fighting be good? as to increase the number of attacks (and potential levels drained?). If so I'll change up this build - probably lose two levels of fighter, gain one of ranger and one of something else. I've decided a warforged is the way to go, but Elan was a good idea - it would just require the deformity to get the natural attack, and this is much faster. |
| #14mcpoyoMar 20, 2008 14:35:23 | Elan is in the Expanded Psionics Handbook. IGNORE THE QUESTION THAT WAS HERE, I MISSED THE PREREQ OF THAT FEAT |
| #15fricot_1Mar 20, 2008 14:56:59 | So its looking like... Warforged Ranger 2/ Fighter 2/ Barbarian 1/ Soul Eater X/ Other Y Rgr1 - Mithral Body (1HD), Combat Expertise (Flaw), Improved Trip (Flaw), Track (Bonus) Rgr2 - Two Weapon Fighting (Bonus) Rgr2/Ftr1 - Alertness (3HD), Weapon Focus (Slam) (Bonus) Rgr2/Ftr2 - Improved Nat. Attack (Slam) (Bonus) Rgr2/Ftr2/Barb1? Rgr2/Ftr2/Barb1?/SE1 - Improved Fortification or Improved Two Weapon Fighting Also, can I make touch attacks with my natural weapons for no damage but for Energy Drain? Except I am just taking Barbarian for the BAB, is there a class that grants alertness at level 1? that would free up a feat. |
| #16fricot_1Mar 20, 2008 15:07:48 | {Ignored Question} |
| #17eepopMar 20, 2008 15:49:17 | Barbarian can give you pounce using the alternate class feature in complete champion, so it makes an excellent dip. |
| #18Midnight_vMar 20, 2008 16:35:12 | Yeah but what about that intriguing back story?![]() there's actualy a souleaters handbook in Surreals index... stickied at the top of the front page. |
| #19aftercrescentMar 20, 2008 17:21:34 | So its looking like... If you can use variant classes, there is a variant ranger that gets a familiar instead of an animal companion. That'll net you alertness. Ranger variant 4/Fighter 1 should get you what you're looking for without the barb dip. It can fit in flavorwise with your story too. :D |
| #20avatar_of_kraggMar 20, 2008 17:22:47 | Unless you are using your Unarmed strike, you don't get multiple attacks with natural weapons. Also I don't think you could two weapon fight with natural attacks, just multiattack. I suggest you go Barb 1/ Fighter 4/ Souleater 10 Barb1: Lion totem sub barb1/fgt1: weapon focus(slam) barb1/fgt2:Warforged sub(Shocking fist or Jaws of Death); Alertness barb1/fgt3: barb1/fgt4:Warforged Sub*+2 dmg with natural attacks/attached components barb1/fgt4/Soul Eater 1: Second Slam I dont remember if the Souleater gives Temporary HP, if it does, you could pick up Shocking fist and use those to fuel your Shocking fists to do more damage. If it doesn't Jaws of Death gives you another attack in which to drain more lvls. |
| #21fricot_1Mar 20, 2008 18:05:29 | Why Lion Totem? It only gives Run as a bonus feat. :S Is there something I am missing? |
| #22aftercrescentMar 20, 2008 18:10:32 | Lion Totem from Complete Champion, not Unearthed Arcana. Same name, different ability. From CC, the lion totem grants pounce in place of fast movement. A very nice ability. |
| #23fricot_1Mar 20, 2008 18:20:52 | So why not... Warforged Ranger 1/ Barbarian 1/ Ranger +1/ Fighter 2/ Soul Eater X/ Other Y Rgr1 - Mithral Body (1HD), Shocking Fist (Flaw), Alertness (Flaw), Track (Ranger Bonus) Rgr1/Barb1 - Pounce (Bonus) Rgr2/Barb1 - Improved Unarmed Strike (3HD), Two Weapon Fighting (Ranger Bonus) Rgr2/Barb1/Ftr1 - Weapon Focus (Slam) (Fighter Bonus) Rgr2/Barb1/Ftr2 - ??? (Fighter Bonus) Rgr2/Ftr2/Barb1?/SE1 - Improved Two Weapon Fighting This way I would have +6/+1 BAB with my Unarmed Strike and then a +6 natural with my Slam? (then account the penalties for two weapon fighting) ...I think. Its just losing Track/Two Weapon Fighting for +2 to damage seems a little weak. EDIT: Feats corrected. And I think this is pretty important, the Soul Eater prestige class says its "touch" deals the energy drain. So, can't it make a Slam with one hand and an Unarmed Strike with the other, both of which will deal Energy Drain (Two Weapon Fighting penalties do apply). And my DM said I can make one natural attack multiple times if my base attack bonus allows, as in at +6/+1 two punches, or two bites, or two tail slaps. But not two bites and two punches. So there is no need to take Second Slam. |
| #24fricot_1Mar 20, 2008 18:43:58 | At level 6 hes looking like... Seven NE Warforged Ranger 2/ Lioin Totem Barbarian 1/ Warforged Fighter 2/ Soul Eater 1 HP:50 (6HD) Initiative: +3 Speed: 30ft. Languages: Common, Dwarven, Elvish AC: 17 (10 +5 (Mithral Body) +3 (Dex) -1(Vulnerable)) Touch AC: 13 Flat-Footed AC: 15 Saves: Fort: +12 Ref:+8 Will:+3 Base Attack Bonus: +6/+1 Attack: +12 Slam (+1 Battlefist) for (1d6+5+Energy Drain) or +11 Unarmed Strike (+1 Battlefist) for (1d6+5+Energy Drain) Full Attack: Slam (+1 Battlefist) +10/+5 (1d6+5+Energy Drain) and Unarmed Strike (+1 Battlefist) +9/+4 (1d6+3+Energy Drain) Touch Attacks: +9/+9/+4/+4 Energy Drain Special: Seven can loose up to 6HP to deal an additional 6d4 damage with one strike (including Touch Attacks). Grapple: +10 Str: 18 Dex:17 Con: 14 Int: 14 Wis: 13 Cha: 9 Feats: Mithral Body (1HD), Shocking Fist (Flaw), Alertness (Flaw), Track (Ranger Bonus), Pounce (Bonus), Improved Unarmed Strike (3HD), Two Weapon Fighting (Ranger Bonus), Weapon Focus (Slam) (Fighter Bonus), Improved Two Weapon Fighting One unused Fighter Bonus Feat** |
| #25ChristopherGrovesMar 20, 2008 19:34:16 | There are some WF fighter sub levels that could be nifty for you. One gives an init bonus, one gives a bonus WF feat instead of fighter feat and one gives you a hit or damage bonus (forget) for natty or attached weapons. And d12 hit points. |
| #26bauglirMar 20, 2008 20:04:31 | Harvester of Souls has a similar effect for one feat. Elder Evils. When you die, though, they can be raised, etc. So make sure you're something immortal. |
