| #1damien_wilacothSep 06, 2010 11:36:16 | Well, I'm now pretty sure that my DM wants my head on a platter. He's challenged me to an all-in: a level 20 gestalt, 56 point buy, and 760,000 GP, all books and magazines allowed (so long as I don't use more than 2), against Moradin (Deities and Demigods, page 83). My initial thoughts were Colossus of War on one side, with a good dose of Factotum and Dragoon on the other. Any suggestions? |
| #2lycanthrope0Sep 06, 2010 13:31:25 | you can only use 2 books all together? or two per side of the build? |
| #3damien_wilacothSep 06, 2010 20:19:56 | you can only use 2 books all together? or two per side of the build? I can use any amount of books. I can only use two magazines, altogether. |

| #6nice2meetuSep 10, 2010 1:18:27 | The above build will need the buffetting fists graft to survive ranged annihilating strikes. Delay death < disintegration, so I doubt it would prevent the salient ability (SDA) from obliterating father Donovan. Annihilating strikes work in an AMF, as do the buffetting fists (from Magic of Eberron 131). They give deflect arrows up to Dex Mod +1. A little dexterity can block all thrown hammers. Then, only speed matters, which might give Moradin an edge with his alter form SDA. I don't quite understand how the build could beat SR 71 and auto saves. If you can enlighten me, I stop working on a build, which is quite a puzzle. I think to kill Moradin requires either ranged combat or a one-hit K.O. Hm, Moradin's spot and listen only have a total value of 66 / 50. |
| #7phaedrusxySep 10, 2010 10:17:53 | This old thread probably has some thigns you could use in it. I remember posting a build there that could kill most gods before they even got to go, and bypassed the SDA that lets them automagically go first by using Contingency. Edit: Check out my post on page 12. Use Contingency if he has the Superior Initiative SDA (or whatever it's called) to interrupt his actions. |
| #8damien_wilacothSep 13, 2010 9:26:49 | Currently skimming through several different sorts of builds - everything from an Archivist/ Ardent, leading into a Dweomerkeeper/Mind Mage (should mention that the DM doesn't care if I Prestige on both sides of the gestalt), to various antics involving Black Ethergaunt, Beholder Mage, and VDKs. ...did I mention that he 'somehow' thought that the Paragon template was balanced at a +4 level adjustment? |
| #9aelryinthSep 13, 2010 20:55:29 | Contingency won't interrupt his actions...it goes off after something happens to you, not before. Too many people abuse Contingency and think it will respond to anything on the fly. I'm not even sure it will react to you losing initiative. What in the spell lets it know you've lost? There's no early warning system built into it, and its not a divination spell. ==Aelryinth |
| #10phaedrusxySep 14, 2010 9:27:59 | I don't want to argue with Aelryinth, because it is a waste of time and he'll go on endlessly. I just want to state that he is wrong. Contingency fires immediately upon the trigger condition. If you set the trigger condition to "If I see Moradin begin to do anything" (for example), then it will interrupt his action before it is finished, assuming you can see it. There are plenty of other "interrupts" in D&D, and a carefully worded Contingency should certainly work as one. You do need to take great care in crafting the trigger, though. Set the Contingency to fire off a Temporal Acceleration (the psionic version of Time Stop), and you'll get to crank out a bunch of actions before the All Father's first action is finished. |
| #11damien_wilacothSep 14, 2010 10:09:20 | Considering that the current version of the build is a StP Erudite/ 'Magic Mantle' Ardent, that sounds like a good plan. |
| #12aelryinthSep 14, 2010 20:00:44 | I don't want to argue with Aelryinth, because it is a waste of time and he'll go on endlessly. I just want to state that he is wrong. Damien is incorrect. Contingency can't 'see' Moradin. Find me anything in the spell that says so. Contingency reacts only to something happening to the caster. It can react to you getting hit, saying something, or an effect taking place on you. It can't predict something, react to something someone else does, and it certainly doesn't pre-empt anything. Contingency is effectively a seperate little entity, NOT an extension of your intentions, and it's waiting for a trigger. It has no divinatory ability beyond what happens to the caster. the caster 'seeing Moradin' informs the Contingency of nothing. (Not to mention it's horribly worded. What if the caster saw a hand carving of Moradin fall out of the sky? Moradin did something! Pooosh. waste of spell...Contingency has an Int score of 0, after all. And it's not like Moradin couldn't Miracle up Contingencies, either.) Contingency Abuse is rife, and it just doesn't work. And yes, the Sage did rule on Contingency as above. ==Aelryinth |
| #13damien_wilacothSep 14, 2010 20:29:05 | How can I be incorrect, Aelryinth? I never stated an opinion. Now, as much fun as it would be to see this thread turn into the Colossus of War thread (one page about the actual build, ten of you arguing about the exact same point, using the exact same shaky logic), I do not want that to happen here. In any case, going first won't be a problem - Moradin doesn't have Supreme Initiative. Focus of the build, therefore, doesn't have to be 'counter his first move.' Considering that the challenge of defeating him is not only in actually fighting him, but also in finding and getting him to stick around, part of the challenge is also in his psychology. He is the All-Father, maker and protector of the dwarves, who despises all evidence of taint in his creation. Locate City Zombie Nuke, anyone? ![]() |
