| #1WizardDidItJan 10, 2013 11:15:21 | Hey guys! I'm working on a kineticist psion build for a level 20 character. I'll post up a build later after I run a few things by the DM regarding learning powers outside of my discipline, but for now I have a question regarding telekinetic thrust (I've been looking for ways around saves, spell resist and anti-magic). If I hurl 20 projectiles at an enemy, would each projectile gain the benefit of Psionic Shot or Wounding Attack? Expending my focus and my crystals focus to tack Fell Shot onto either of those damage bonuses could pack a wallop, but it is rather feat intensive so I don't want to commit to this idea if it isn't as great as it seems it could be. |
| #2Tempest_StormwindJan 10, 2013 13:01:38 | Several of my answers are also in the New Psionics FAQ. Take a look there!Hey guys! I'm working on a kineticist psion build for a level 20 character. Be advised that kineticists look like they're all about damage, but have to learn to branch outside of that for the higher levels since even a kineticist will have problems keeping up with monster HP. Also, are you going full kineticist, or are you prestige classing out? (With only, I think, two exceptions, every psionic PrC costs at least one manifester level, which really hurts how your powers develop. One of the exceptions is the Anarchic Initiate, which despite being badly designed might actually be one of the things that helps a kineticist...) I'll post up a build later after I run a few things by the DM regarding learning powers outside of my discipline... Um... if he's forcing you to learn only psychokinesis powers, he should probably be smacked around a bit with a large trout. The default with psions is to choose from the entire psion/wilder list (regardless of discipline), plus whatever powers are on your discipline list. (There are two definitions of the word "discipline" in psionics; the old psi boards used to call the specialist lists "devotions" as a way of distinguishing them from the "school of magic" analogue.) ...but for now I have a question regarding telekinetic thrust (I've been looking for ways around saves, spell resist and anti-magic). If I hurl 20 projectiles at an enemy, would each projectile gain the benefit of Psionic Shot or Wounding Attack? No. Those feats apply to a single ranged damage (Psionic Shot) or attack (Wounding Attack) roll, while TK Thrust throws several such effects. If it helps, here's an illustration. You CAN do things like use Fell Shot on Manyshot (so all the arrows fired use a single, touch attack), but you CAN'T do things like use Greater Psionic Shot on the arrows from Manyshot (since each arrow is a separate damage roll). If you want TK Thrust to be absolutely killer, use TK Thrust to throw a big pile of ammunition (arrows, bolts, sling bullets, shuriken, or actual bullets (if firearms are involved)). These are magically enhanced at 50 for the price of one. You want the ones you throw to either be Spell Storing / Power Storing, or Bane. Spell Storing ammo can be loaded up in advance and then used to offload as many spells at the target as projectiles you can throw, all at once (assuming you can hit their normal AC, that's a huge action advantage). Bane works best if you've got an artificer on the team who can quickly whip it up to match whatever enemy type you're fighting, but that adds +2 to each attack roll and causes the projectiles to deal an extra 2d6 damage on hit (again, this adds up reall fast). And while you're enhancing arrows, you can also be cheap and get a quiver of Manifester arrows. That gives you fifty hits of five power points, which helps you a lot if you need to manifest basic powers of level 3 or less. Expending my focus and my crystals focus to tack Fell Shot onto either of those damage bonuses could pack a wallop, but it is rather feat intensive so I don't want to commit to this idea if it isn't as great as it seems it could be. Fell Shot also won't work for reasons I mentioned above. If you're looking for something else to consider for this, just look into ways of raising your manifester level. Overchannel is the basic feat for this for psions; anarchic initiate is a way of getting Wild Surge as a psion instead of having to be a wilder, and so on. Often that'll be all you need. |
| #3WizardDidItJan 10, 2013 17:46:53 | Ah ok, figured that it seemed a bit too good to be true since nothing I had found thus far mentioned using those feats for TK Thrust craziness. How viable would it be to have a single massive weapon to throw around (think 250lb or more magically enhanced wrecking ball)? My initial plan before I started doing some research on psions and discovered stuff like Twin Power, Split Ray etc, was to go all out into focusing on TK Thrust. Your suggestion for piles of spell-storing/bane ammo seems hilarious, but a bit too cheesy for the group I play with. I'm not restricted to using Kineticist powers only, I just have to see if chirurgery/borrowing powers from followers will be permitted (probably not) before deciding what to all take. The general plan is to have 1 or 2 save-or-dies, a few powers for blasting like crystal shard/burst and tornado blast, the usual buffing stuff and then as much battlefield control/death prevention stuff as possible. I'll take a look through the FAQ and try to get a build up to be critiqued sometime today or tomorrow. Thanks! |
| #4awaken_D_M_golemJan 11, 2013 14:51:11 | carnivore has a Kineticist 17 / Pyrokineticist 3 build sketch here: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... The Pyro part can be Sono or Electro, via wizards.com Mind's Eye goodies. |
| #5WizardDidItJan 11, 2013 23:42:51 | Yeah ADMG I had looked through that thread already, has a lot of great info. That build is interesting but I prefer to keep full ML as I'm planning to use Schism a fair bit. Speaking of which, would taking Practiced Manifester be worth it to negate some of the penalty from Schism? Also, how does psionic focus interact with Schism? And last question before I can fully decide on a build- would getting the Fell Shot feat to use TK Thrust to throw around a large weapon (ie something I acutally spend money on to enhance instead of just a large rock) be a viable way to work around antimagic? |
| #6WizardDidItJan 14, 2013 15:34:57 | I've resolved everything I needed to for my build now (thanks again for the FAQ Tempest, helped a lot), with the exception of one 5th level power. What do you guys think would be better, hanging on to Incarnate in case I need to redo/add some buffs, or picking up Power Resistance? |
| #7awaken_D_M_golemJan 14, 2013 16:15:00 | Yeah, level 7 with Schism, the main mind is 7ml, the schism'd part is 1 ml, Prac Manifester boosts the main mind 0, the schism'd part is +4=5 ml. Schism'd part can "expend focus" with it's action, but refocus requires a Full Round, schism'd part can't do this, or Psi Meditation feat can do it with a Move, schism'd part can't do that either. Fell Shot on TK Thrust ... is an interesting idea. Much more likely to hit on the attack, but still has the normal Will Saves. I haven't run the maths, and don't recall anyone else doing them. I'll hazard a guess, that since a Touch Attack verges on auto-hit, it'd be a long term neutral. Try it. I forget what happens when a magic rock goes into an AMF. Maybe it hits me on the head - iirc. |
| #8WizardDidItJan 14, 2013 16:30:25 | I actually ended up dropping TK Thrust since as you note, Will saves are permitted which pretty much negates the benefit of dealing touch attacks in the first place. The feats required to make such a focused build viable also don't leave a whole lotta room for anything else, I ended up going a more traditional build taking a ton of meta feats. I also realized that there would be no point in magically enhancing a wrecking ball type weapon since antimagic would negate all that extra cash spent ![]() Schism is pretty awesome but after seeing the amount of power points you can use up in a single round I decided to drop it as well, also factoring in that I'm trying to stay in line with the rest of the group and not explode things constantly. The second point was more of a factor than the first ![]() One workaround I found for keeping psifocus up consistently if you do want to unload a lot of damage fast is using the Belt of Battle, single charge gives you an extra move = regaining focus. If you don't mind burning up additional power points theres also the option of using Hustle for an extra move action as well. |
| #9Tempest_StormwindJan 14, 2013 16:49:05 | Buy a dorje of hustle. Rules Compendium makes it clear that a spell trigger (and thus power trigger) item takes as long to use as the spell/power it contains. Slot it into your weapon through a wand chamber (CAdv). 4500gp for fifty move actions, triggerable one swift action at a time. Good for a refocus every now and again if you have Psionic Meditation. As for Schism, don't take it on a psyrogue for manifesting. If you're considering it, look up the Always on Edge build in my signature. There, Schism is used to power the Deft Strike feat (takes a standard mental action to perform, and look what Schism provides). It's not as powerful as say, slotted wands of wraithstrike, but it's available even when cheese like that is banned. On a pure psion, Schism it's powerful, but often not quite worth the cost of the feat since it comes online next round and you have to spend feats to make up for its lost MLs. I usually find more mileage out of Anticipatory Strike and/or Temporal Acceleration, depending on what I'm doing, but for a kineticist... |
| #10WizardDidItJan 14, 2013 17:00:16 | I think you are confusing this thread with the other psion one which was about a psyrogue, im playing a level 20 psion;). Dorje of Hustle is a good call though, I'll definitely pick one up. On the subject of wands, what kind of stuff would be a good idea to pick up on some Eternal Wands? I have some leftover gp to spend still, was thinking of getting (can't remember exact name) that item that negates 12 death attacks then is consumed, believe it is 36k, and then spending the remainder on some wands. |
| #11Tempest_StormwindJan 14, 2013 17:23:27 | I think you are confusing this thread with the other psion one which was about a psyrogue, im playing a level 20 psion;). Fixed. And added some other notes on Schism. Dorje of Hustle is a good call though, I'll definitely pick one up. Issue here is that it's not actually a psion power. It's an egoist power or a psychic warrior power. You'll need Use Psionic Device to trigger it - and that's not a kineticist class skill but rather a shaper's. You might just be able to make a psion who doesn't bother with expenditures, or won't need them more than once. For instance, my shaper has no maintain-focus effects and one expend-focus effect (the Personal Construct alternative class feature - manifest Astral Construct as a swift action, but the specific construct you create is fixed each time you gain a level.). I'm universally a fan of Heroics in eternal wands (gain a fighter feat for which you qualify, lasts half an hour), but that's less useful for mage-types or psions. |
| #12aelryinthJan 14, 2013 18:33:33 | Scarab of Protection? hmm. Might be something else in the MIC. ==Aelryinth |
| #13WizardDidItJan 14, 2013 19:08:42 | Yeah thats the one, Scarab of Protection. Thanks aerlryinth! I was also eying Scarab of Invulnerability from MIC, but apparently becoming immune to everything for 1 round only supresses stuff like ongoing poison or ability damage rather then removing it. In our first session I already got hit with a save or die and due to story reasons in the campaign we are currently unable to resurrect anybody that dies, so uh, kinda important to not have that happen . I didn't really want to spare the feat to negate some of Schisms penalty, thats another good point Tempest. I've got Temporal Acceleration which really is all the extra actions I need- although if you were to use Schism while under the effect of TA would it not be available for use when you drop out of TA? Regardless, I don't plan to use it but I am curious on that point. For Eternal Wands I found this thread www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t... |
