A little help with an idea and a query.

Jul 18, 2009 13:37:18 Hey there, long time lurker first time poster. Wasn't too sure if this should go in this forum or the role play help forum. Anyways long story short I am trying to work out the idea of a character of mine that was in my friends evil campaign a while back, he started out his career as a CE halfling warrior who was going into barbarian but due to his abnormally large int score chose factotum instead for a a laugh. The character served Cyric very faithfully and had a psychotic hatred of paladins and bards especially gnome and elven or half elf ones and would actively seek out and destroy such characters with EXTREME PREJUDICE (CHA damage poisons and invisible bear traps were a staple of his). The character did very well in the game making it to around level 12 surviving not one but three TPK's (besides him) taking out many paladins bards and other PC's and "died" only once but had a contingency last breath spell cast on him and through it and dm/cyric divine intervention gained the "cyric blooded" template, essentially the vecna blooded template revamped as well as half fiend template.

Anyways the old evil campaign rapped up a while ago but I was hoping to get some input on an idea of bringing this guy back for a more neutral/good aligned game, except the backstory for him so far is that he has been killed by a group of powerful paladins and clerics of a yet to be named god and reincarnated as a half elf paladin.
Essentially being forced to redeem himself for his crimes instead of joining the abyss. I am looking at a way for him to be put on the path of redemption with the help of items/spells/organizations to keep him on track.
I saw the phylactery of faithfulness item that would react to adverse actions such as those that would result in the fall of a paladin and thought about customizing it to a specific geas/quest type spell affecting the character or a domination effect though not too sure what is best. any input on a custom item/ combo of spells or epic spell that would keep this fellow in line and force him to be a good boy?

Jul 23, 2009 22:59:58 never mind (not that anyone seemed to pay much mind anyway) I think I found what i was looking for in that custom item the doll of the repentant, or something along those lines. Now I just need to work out a paladin/bard multiclass or possibly paladin/blackguard if he gets of his chain.

Jul 24, 2009 11:34:14 Have you thought of perhaps making him a Helbred? It is in the Lord of the 9 Hells sourcebook and sounds perfect for what you want (evil character on the path to redemption).

In a nutshell Helbreds are evil characters who on death realise the fate that await them in the everlasting hells/abyss and who repent just a tad too late but not totally too late. A good deity intervenes for their spirits at the absolute last minute to give them one final chance to redeem their past sins and try to earn a place in the good afterlife. In retaliation the evil scion that is getting gypped 'reforges' the body.

They have two seperate foci they can choose from when starting (one is +Cha) and have Paladin as their favored class. Among some free infernal feats (yes you read that right) they can also freely use evil aligned items as long as their use is against evil and does not violate their alignment or code.

The kicker is that it is very rare for a helbred to succeed in redeeming themselve and if they make even ONE error they pretty much go straight to damnation. Of course sometimes it is that very thing that makes them succeed, ONE mistake and BAM. Check out the Phylactery of Faithfulness (?) from the DMG. It is a magic item that tells you your about to violate your alignment before you do it, giving you a safety net of sorts.

Also they look evil touched as well, despite their lawful good aligments and Paladin classes.

Jul 25, 2009 19:13:45 I was thinking about hellbred actually, but it seems more like a lawful evil character that would end up hellbred, this guy was quite thoroughly chaotic evil. The reason for choosing a half elf paladin or potentially elf paladin has to do with his blatant attacks on these races and bards, being reincarnated as one and having to walk in their shoes and help to get rid of his former allies and cyric worshippers alike. The phylactery is a good idea, but i was wondering about the organization that would keep an eye out for him to make sure he does in fact stay in line and follow orders. I was thinking Harpers? maybe an organization from complete champion? maybe the shadowstrikers/spies of pelor?
