First off, it feels good to be back! I've been excessively busy lately with moving and haven't had much time to do ANYTHING, let alone sit around lurking in forums!

Anyway, lets get down to business. I've joined a new group up here and need to make a new char. The rules are thus:

  • 32 point buy
  • SRD (and all other open source material) + "Pathfinder Alpha 3" rules. This can be found on Paizo's site for free.
  • Starting level 2
  • Action point system via UA
  • Max HP at first level, (1/2 HD type) +1 +CON every level
  • That about sums it up

A few significant points to note:

  • Base feat progression is every odd level instead of every third level
  • Every core race gets an additional +2 to a specific ability, humans get a +2 to whatever ability desired (I plan on being human)
  • All core classes have been heavily modified. The justification to this is to "rebalance them to make them more appealing compared to newer classes." I feel this is unnecessary, however this is a non-issue as you will soon find out

Now that those are out of the way, lets get down to buisness...again...

I plan on playing a psionic class. I also plan on playing a combat-oriented class. Obviously I'm gravitating to Psychic Warrior, however I'm not pleased with the poor amount of PP I get in doing so. One idea I had was go with a Psion and take the Slayer PrC from the SRD. Then I got thinking; Would it be better to take Psi War into Slayer?

Here lies my conundrum. Should I take Psy War or Psion?

After I have solved this we can get to the meat and potatoes of the character :D

Thanks a bunch!

Psion to Slayer is easily the more superior path. Consider either Ranger 1/Psion 6/Slayer 10/Anarchic Initiate 3 or Ranger 2/Psion 4/Slayer 10/Anarchic Initiate 4. You get 9th level powers, a huge number of power points, awesome skill points from the very beginning with solid saves all the time and all the Slayer coolness.

My DM is a little... finiky about Min/Max-ing. I thought I put this in my original post, but apparently I left it out. I want to keep multiclassing to a minimum (no more than 3 classes total if it can be helped).

Is anarchic initiate open source? I thought it was in Complete Psionic.

When you say "combat-oriented" do you mean melee? What role in the party will you be taking? If the answer is primary meleer, I would suggest PsyWar. At level 2, you will need the HD.

IMO, one of the biggest differences between PsyWar and Psion is what they use the spells for. PsyWar is a Fighter that buffs himself with powers to aid in combat -- usually melee, but sometimes ranged. Psion is a Wizard/Sorcerer that is focused on casting (manifesting) alone -- be it blasting, mind-control, party-buffing, summoning, or whatever.

Which one do you want to be?

What I want to go for is a back-up meleeist (is that even a word?) with a side dish of buffs and nukes. I also want to sacrifice as few manifester levels as possible in the process.

One idea I have is:

Egoist 1
Egoist 2
Egoist 3
Egoist 4
Egoist 5
Egoist 6
Egoist 7
Egoist 8
Egoist 8/Slayer 1
Egoist 8/Slayer 2
Egoist 8/Slayer 3
Egoist 8/Slayer 4
Egoist 8/Slayer 5
Egoist 8/Slayer 6
Egoist 8/Slayer 7
Egoist 8/Slayer 8
Egoist 8/Slayer 9
Egoist 8/Slayer 10
Egoist 9/Slayer 10
Egoist 10/Slayer 10

Would I cry myself to sleep at night if I did this?

Well, you'd probably be avoiding melee more than you'd want, until your levels of Slayer start to kick in. Feat-wise, I'd suggest Psionic Body & Linked Power.

It sounds like you want a Psionic gish build. There are endless possibilities. I'd start with a search on this board for "Psionic gish".

How does the Pathfinder Alpha stuff apply to the psionic classes? For instance, does the psion get a d6 for hit dice and the wilder a d8?

I'd consider something straightforward like:
Barbarian 1/Wilder 4/Slayer 10

Obviously a psion will have more powers than a wilder, but it sounds like you don't need to be the party's "wizard-equivalent" at any rate.

(Note -- in Pathfinder there is no "Track" feat, so it's essentially free to enter the Slayer class.)

Is this what you are talking about ?
linky ---> http://paizo.com/store/downloads/pathfinderRPG/v5748btpy8253

The psionic board got folded into the spells grouping,
now called: "Spells, Invocations, Psionics, and Magic Items".

Most of the old links still work, but obviously "nobody" has done that + paizo, yet.

You can see a (sort-of) on-line version here: http://alpha3.wikidot.com/home

And for all of the people recommending the Ardent class, the Linked Power metapsionic feat and other stuff from Complete Psionic, note that the original poster can only use stuff from the Psionic SRD and the Pathfinder "SRD" -- no other stuff is allowed.
