| #2sofawallApr 26, 2009 21:42:06 | Why the four more Sorcerer? Why not another prestige class? |
| #3SwordDiscipleApr 26, 2009 22:01:18 | Quite simply.. Wasn't sure what to put there.. Archmage doesn't work because I don't want to waste three feats on it. Ultimate Magus won't work. Spellwarp Sniper is my Favourite Spellcasting PrC and I don't want to waste the feats on that either.. The feats I have taken are for flavour or fun ![]() |
| #4reisApr 26, 2009 22:06:23 | Ioun stones give a enhancement bonus to an ability score, in your case this will not stack with the +6 afforded by your cloak of charisma. I would seriously consider adding/changing the following spells in your repertoire: 2nd: get Wings of Cover from Races of the Dragon, it's filled with awesomeness 4th: consider picking up Wings of Flurry from Races of the Dragon, it's quite potent when combined with the high save DC and CL boosts your character has acces too 7th: Arcane Spellsurge from Dragon Magic. This is a must have, it's silly powerful when combined correctly with metamagic. 8th: Get Greater Arcane Fusion from Complete Mage Arcane Spellsurge+Greater Arcane fusion is arguably pretty broken. You can cast a metamagicked spell as a standard action (since it makes full round castings standard) and then cast a Greater Arcane fusion as a swift action (since it makes the standard action swift) and cast 2 more spells. There's more spell recommendations as well as item ones I can make, I'll try to fit them in later if others don't get around to it first. |
| #5SwordDiscipleApr 26, 2009 22:17:48 | Really? Oh well.. I'll remove that then ![]() Thanks for the spell ideas Reis ![]() |
| #6sofawallApr 26, 2009 22:31:16 | Isn't there a draconic flavoured sorcerer PrC? |
| #7SwordDiscipleApr 26, 2009 23:04:11 | Dragonheart mage? That drops a caster level again.. Hmm.. Additionally, what good spells for the rest of my list should I have? Polymorph spells are out |
| #8danduApr 27, 2009 7:09:53 | Take four levels of Fatespinner. It's from C. Arc. You must have 5 ranks in Profession: Gambler, ten in Knowledge: Arcana, and be able to cast 4th level spells, including one Divination of 1st level or higher. |
| #9jameswilliamogleApr 27, 2009 7:13:59 | Cloud spells. 1 Obscurring Mist 2 Fog Cloud 3 Stinking Cloud, Contagious Fog 4 Solid Fog 5 Cloudkill 6 Acid Fog 8 Incindiary Cloud I took the L3-L6 options on my current Sorcerer (having never played w/ them that much before), and they absolutely freakin' rock. SR? No problem... Meanwhile, the Wizard can't land a single Disintigrate against the monsters we face every freakin' combat (ridiculous Fort saves - the save DC is 26, and he's landed one this whole campaign, and it didn't even freakin' kill the thing!). He preps like 6 every day. Smoky mage knows best. I also really like Plane Shift. Its offensive / utility / defensive in one spell. :D |
| #10dr_rocktopusApr 27, 2009 11:50:22 | If you don't have planeshift, you are not a main-line caster. Dimension Hop if you're missing it. |
| #11WebNinjaApr 27, 2009 12:02:45 | How does that draconic words thingamajob works? You can apply it to every spell? Is there a limit per day? |
| #12SwordDiscipleApr 27, 2009 16:43:47 | Take four levels of Fatespinner. It's from C. Arc. You must have 5 ranks in Profession: Gambler, ten in Knowledge: Arcana, and be able to cast 4th level spells, including one Divination of 1st level or higher. I will have a look and see how it adds to the build.. Thanks ![]() Edit: Nice :D thanks for your help! Cloud spells. Will look. Thanks James :D If you don't have planeshift, you are not a main-line caster. Planeshift seems popular huh.. I've never used it. Will obviously have to have a read :D However, I have Dimension Step as a Party Battlefield Control spell.. How does that draconic words thingamajob works? You can apply it to every spell? Is there a limit per day? From the book Speaking a word is a swift action that activates the word’s effect; if the word affects a particular creature, you can target any creature (including yourself) within 30 feet. A silence spell or similar effect prevents you from using Draconic words; if you are deafened, you have a 20% chance of misspeaking a Draconic word when using it (this counts as a use of the word but has no effect). So you can apply them to your spells that have Verbal components as much as you want, however only one word per round. You can only affect one target per 24 hours, but if you are Empowering (Etc) a spell with a word, then you can do this as often as you want as long as it is affecting that which is stipulated, Eg Valignat: can either empower or widen a spell but it must be of the Fire descriptor. Any ideas for magic items? |
| #13WebNinjaApr 27, 2009 18:15:59 | Thanks for clearing that up for me =) |
| #14WyvernhandApr 27, 2009 18:24:01 | For gear Cloak of Cha +6 with Resistance (36000 + 25000 = 61,000g) Circlet of Rapid Casting (MIC 15,000g) Anklets of Translocation (MIC 1,800g) Raiment of the Four set (MIC ~20,000g for 4 pieces) Amulet of Con +6 (36,000g) Lesser Rod of Empower Spell Gloves of Forunate Striking (MIC) Third Eye: Clarity (MIC) After that, maybe a Runestaff or so to augement your spells known and a few Momento Magicas for 1st and 2nd level. Also, unless you have something adjusting spell levels that I don't know of, you have Wings of Flurry as a 3rd level spell. Its 4th. And you have Draconic Breath, but no metabreath spells. Get at least 1 like Blinding Breath so you can double dip your breath weapon as a disable. |
| #15sofawallApr 27, 2009 18:48:30 | Dang those custom item rules. I tend to ignore them, as it leads to sillyness. Specifically, stupid ability scores. Why buy a +6 item when 6 +1 items, of different types, all unslotted, cost so much less! And that's the least of it. |
| #16reisApr 27, 2009 18:51:06 | If you're picking up cloud spells for battlefield control I also recommend freezing fog (5th level, Spell compendium) Wall of Stone/Iron/Force is also pretty useful to have around for control purposes. Rope trick or Mordenkainen's Magnificent mansion are very nice for being able to rest in less than safe areas, although for a sorcerer you might be well advised to pick these up in scroll or wand (for the former) form. here are some other good magic items for your character as well: Heward's Handy Haversack (DMG)- minor bag of holding, and retrieving items is a move action. Every adventurer should have one.- 2500g Ring of Arcane Might (Complete Arcane)- +1 caster level, enough said. -20k will add more as I think of them. As I mentioned about rope trick/MMM part of the trick of playing a sorcerer is knowing what spells you will need to cast often and taking those for your spells known, and keeping the spells you occasionally might need for utility or in an emergency around in scroll/wand/staff etc form. |
| #17SwordDiscipleApr 27, 2009 19:01:44 | For gear Nice ideas.. Not sure if the whole rainment is worthwhile but the Periapt of the Sullen Sea looks interesting I thought metamagic rods would be the go.. But hadn't thought of Runestaff or ?Momento Magicas? What are these? Thanks ![]() If you're picking up cloud spells for battlefield control I also recommend freezing fog (5th level, Spell compendium) Haha that's why I thought Prismatic Wall.. I was thinking of getting a Staff that allowed me to cast Wall spells rather than have them in my list ![]() Rope trick definately in scroll version and probably Leomunds hut too. Ring of Arcane Might (Complete Arcane).. God, how could I miss that gem?! Thanks Reis!! :D |
| #18WyvernhandApr 27, 2009 20:20:31 | Dang those custom item rules. Actually, MIC introduced rules for adding basic stats to existing magic items the occupy the same affinity slot for the price of each item seperately, instead of the DMG's 1.5x multiplier. Since Cha and Resistance go on a cloak, and since both are basic stats, you could start with a Cloak of Resistance and add Cha, or start with a Cloak of Cha and add Resistance. You couldn't start with a Cloak of the Bat and add Montebanke though. Basic stats only. If you don't like that, just get a Vest of Resistance (CAdv). I didn't have anything occupying the torso slot, so it would be an idea. There are some nice torso slots, so double up if you can. |
| #19sofawallApr 27, 2009 20:31:13 | Well, that does mean Cha characters don't get shafted for resistance anymore, but I still don't like it. What is the definition of a basic stat, by the way? |
| #20SwordDiscipleApr 27, 2009 20:37:00 | I think something that increases one of your basic stats.. Ability Scores, Saves, Etc. I'm liking the way this is coming together.. Thanks for all your input guys (and girls maybe?) :D |
| #21WyvernhandApr 27, 2009 20:39:22 | Check out MIC. Its basically... Deflection Natural Armor Resistance (+all saves) +Stats (Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha) The rule was invented because these are items that almost all characters need, and with the advent of a ton of new magic items in the MIC, there is too much competition for body slots. And certain classes really got the shaft. The fact that Wis and Con always occupied the neck slot ment that Monks, Clerics, and Druids couldn't get a Con bonus easily, and everyone had to choose between NA and Con if they wanted either. EDIT: Oh, and OP, I just noticed that you have both a Cloak of Cha +6 and an Ioun Stone. They both give Enhancement bonuses to Cha, thus wouldn't stack with each other. Thus, drop the Ioun Stone, since its more cash for less bonus. |
| #22SwordDiscipleApr 27, 2009 21:03:10 | Check out MIC. Its basically... The Orange Prism increases caster level by one, not Cha :D |
| #23surrealApr 27, 2009 22:09:29 | Dang those custom item rules. What you do is make them dodge bonuses to your ability scores, since dodge bonuses stack ![]() |
| #24sofawallApr 27, 2009 22:12:54 | Even the custom item guidelines aren't that stupid, Surreal :P |
| #25BloodDragonApr 27, 2009 23:20:13 | What you do is make them dodge bonuses to your ability scores, since dodge bonuses stack DM: "And the Roper's Strands sap your Strength for 7 points of ability damage." Player: "I dodge." |
| #26sofawallApr 27, 2009 23:26:05 | ![]() |
| #27WyvernhandApr 27, 2009 23:30:57 | At 20th level his Charisma will be 36 (start of 17 +5 Levels +3 Venerable +5 Tome +6 Cloak +2 Ioun Stone) No, this is what I was refering to with regards to the Ioun Stone. You can't have a +6 Cloak AND a +2 Ioun Stone, both are enhancement bonuses... The Orange Ioun Stone is fine, and should stay put. |
| #28SwordDiscipleApr 27, 2009 23:43:10 | No, this is what I was refering to with regards to the Ioun Stone. You can't have a +6 Cloak AND a +2 Ioun Stone, both are enhancement bonuses... Ahh.. Thank you I had adjusted the final figure, just not removed the text. |
| #29reisApr 28, 2009 0:16:28 | for resistance bonuses on a wizard I would usually say you should have the spell Superior Resistance in your book and cast it every day, but for a sorc this is harder to fit in. Ray Deflection (SC), Wind Wall, and Energy Immunity are probably other good spells to have in scroll/wand/staff form |
| #30dr_rocktopusApr 28, 2009 0:49:09 | DM: "And the Roper's Strands sap your Strength for 7 points of ability damage." ![]() I think I can arrange this. |
| #31SenevriApr 28, 2009 3:03:55 | 9th Level: Wish You misspelled "Gate". |
| #32SwordDiscipleApr 28, 2009 3:46:38 | Hahaha.. So I should have Gate over Wish? One ability of the Dracolexi: At 5th level, you can add any two language dependent spells from your class’s spell list to your list of spells known for that class. The spells must be of a level you are capable of casting, and the two spells must be of different levels. For example, a 5th-level sorcerer/5th-level dracolexi could add lesser geas (a 4th-level sorcerer spell) and suggestion (a 3rd-level sorcerer spell) to his list of spells known. He couldn’t learn command (since it’s a cleric spell) or mass suggestion (since it’s a 6th-level spell and beyond his ability to cast). At 5th level Dracolexi, I will effectively be casting as a 13th level Sorceror (6 Sorceror/ 4 Dracolexi - 1st level dropped +2 Loredrake +1 Ritual) which means 6th level spells are my highest slot. (I was thinking of dropping a level of Fatespinner in earlier so 7th level spells would be open to this - Limited Wish anyone?) So what do you guys think I should take? |
| #33sofawallApr 28, 2009 6:50:03 | Hahaha.. So I should have Gate over Wish? Short answer: Yes. Long Answer: YYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| #34SenevriApr 28, 2009 10:37:51 | Well, let's see. One costs 5000XP, the other either 1000XP or nothing. One can grant one wish, the other can bring forth djinn, efreeti, balor, solar sockpuppets. Several of them, in fact. |
| #35dr_rocktopusApr 28, 2009 12:42:28 | Well, let's see. I thought they took out wish in favor of gate in 3.5. Oh wait, look, they did. ;) Limited wish is definitely worth having though. |
| #36reisApr 28, 2009 15:45:04 | abusing called creatures ability to cast wish on your behalf is a great way to anger your DM and cause him to issue punitive rulings against you, but of course that never stops posters here from recommending it (RAW is all that matters amirite?) |
| #37SwordDiscipleApr 28, 2009 16:08:35 | I was thinking that too.. I don't think my DM would be too nasty if I didn't abuse it but you never know.. Any ideas on the bonus spells to take? Should I go Sorceror 6/ Dracolexi 4/ Fatespinner 1/ Dracolexi 5th so as to get Limited Wish (and something else)? |
| #38dr_rocktopusApr 28, 2009 16:57:01 | abusing called creatures ability to cast wish on your behalf is a great way to anger your DM and cause him to issue punitive rulings against you, but of course that never stops posters here from recommending it (RAW is all that matters amirite?) I never recommended abusing it. Gate has serious potential side-effects both on and off the table. I just said it's probably a better spell than wish for a wide variety of reasons, such as being able to once-in-a-while duplicate wish. Remember, that these creatures are real creatures, no summoned figments, and they remember everything you made them do. Everything. |
| #39danduApr 28, 2009 17:17:01 | So you should probably treat them to a cup of tea afterwards, then? |
| #40SwordDiscipleApr 28, 2009 17:27:54 | Well considering they would never be able to find this character by any means except to ask around physically, he could abuse them. But I would never abuse it anyway.. Being able to Summon a Demon or such to your side in a battle could be advantageous. |
| #41dr_rocktopusApr 28, 2009 18:04:16 | It's... quite hard to hide from a wish. |
| #42tos_shai_huludApr 28, 2009 18:21:53 | If you are good-aligned, consider channeling a celestial. If you are evil-aligned, consider making a pact such that a fiend possesses you. This can give you a +4 sacred or +4 profane bonus to Charisma, as well. I'm not entirely sure about the +4 sacred bonus from the celestial. This may only work in Eberron (where the rules specifically say that channeling celestials works similarly to possessions by fiends). This is itemless, so definitely worth checking into. |
| #43SwordDiscipleApr 28, 2009 18:32:49 | It's... quite hard to hide from a wish. Arguable.. Cloak of Mystery (Su): A Wish cast to obtain information on you would be a divination spell as a Wish duplicates any wizard or sorcerer spell of 8th level or lower, provided the spell is not of a school prohibited to you, or 7th level or lower even if it’s of a prohibited school. They try to find you using a spell, even Wish, and it fails with you gaining all knowledge of who there are etc.. Unless there is a spell that is not a divination that has the same effect as a divination spell? If you are good-aligned, consider channeling a celestial. How does this work? Where can I find it? :D Thank you for the suggestion!! |
| #44reisApr 28, 2009 18:35:08 | Well considering they would never be able to find this character by any means except to ask around physically, he could abuse them. you summon an efreeti and force him to cast wishes on your behalf. Afterwards the efreeti returns to the city of brass and complains to the Grand Sultan of the Efreeti, who uses his abilities as a greater power to snuff out your life with no save allowed or sends his divine rank 0, 30th level efreeti assassin hit squad to kill you and then snuff out your soul so you won't do anything so foolish again. This is what I will do to your character as DM if you abuse called creatures ability to use Wish spells. To be nice I will make this information available to you beforehand with a DC 30 knowledge: the planes check or by asking any efreeti or balor before attempting such foolishness. To quote fear of girls "You can't backstab the dungeon master." |
| #45jameswilliamogleApr 28, 2009 18:37:38 | I never recommended abusing it. Gate has serious potential side-effects both on and off the table. Remember, that these creatures are real creatures, no summoned figments, and they remember everything you made them do. Everything. Just the same, a lot of late stage 3.5 RPGA modules, adventure paths, et al almost REQUIRED abuse of Gate. They started making the published stuff VERY hard. |
| #46tos_shai_huludApr 28, 2009 18:43:29 | How does this work? Where can I find it? :D Thank you for the suggestion!! Well, Channeling Celestials is located in the Book of Exalted Deeds (chapter 1 or 2, i don't recall which), and possessions are listed in various books. The Fiend Folio has the Fiend of Possession prestige class for fiends. An Imp with at least a wisdom of 14 can qualify for the prestige class. Taking five levels would give it enough power to grant the +4 bonus. Then, with the Planar Binding spell, it can be forced into service as your possessing creature. The Eberron Campaign Setting (pg 102) has information on Possessions in Eberron (where they are far more common). Additionally, there are likely other sources (I haven't checked the Fiendish Codex, Heroes of Horror, or anything like that) with additional information about possessions. |
| #47dr_rocktopusApr 28, 2009 18:48:43 | Just the same, a lot of late stage 3.5 RPGA modules, adventure paths, et al almost REQUIRED abuse of Gate. They started making the published stuff VERY hard. Oh god, did they ever. And a lot of the difficulty got really really variable. I'd see players have no trouble with a boss encounter and then get trounced by a supposedly trivial fight. |

| #49dr_rocktopusApr 28, 2009 19:00:35 | I run exclusively home-brewed adventures these days, mostly with class leveled enemies. It makes it way more painful to construct, but the added effort is normally worth it. Recently, not so much.... I dunno, a lot of the spark of running games has gone out for me. But that's OOT. |
| #50jameswilliamogleApr 28, 2009 19:22:12 | Oh god, did they ever. And a lot of the difficulty got really really variable. I'd see players have no trouble with a boss encounter and then get trounced by a supposedly trivial fight. It happened to us this last weekend. Show We're playing the Paizo "Second Darkness" portion of the Pathfinder AP right now. And we just cannot seem to get enough XP to match the damn setting's CR. So, the DM had us go through one of the side-quests. Walked through like 20 enemies, no issues whatsoever. Hezrou on top of that. Blasphemy, Blasphemy, etc. I managed to get off an Empowered Ray of Enfeeblement after an Assay Spell Resistance before the first Blasphemy. Then took 8 Str penalty and basically my PC was out (also a Sorcerer). My Rogue cohort tried to tumble around to flank from the stairs we were going up and failed the pathfinder DC to tumble (now 15 + enemy BAB). Shank, shank, guess what combat reflexes, shank, shank (crit), and he's down to 30 HP. Spellcasters then Scorching Ray the only viable target (death, below -30 HP). Blasphemy again. Ranger (favored enemy elf) manages to kill all the mooks that screwed my cohort. Hezrou comes up and we can't do anything b/c we got like 40 Str penalty between all of us. Oh, but he does hit much weaker than he would've . So, I dimension door away, and Quasit familiar just tries to help out (he can't do anything against the remaining Hezrou... SR vs. wands... etc). So, yeah... Going for another cohort, and this time something that can remove status effects... We don't have a Cleric, just my UMD. |
