Apr 14, 2008 12:07:00 Hello everyone. This may very well be a dumb question and not even meant for these boards, but I have a mechanics question. How is expanding one's spellbooks treated?

For a Wizard, in the PHB, it says that at each new wizard level, one gains two more spells of any spell level or levels that one can cast for their spellbook.

However, what if I'm taking PrCs? Do I still continue to get this increase to my spellbook, as a part of the "+1 level of wizard spellcasting ability"? Is there an official ruling concerning this? One thing that is confusing me is that for the Master Specialist PrC, the 2nd Level ability "Expanded Spellbook" states:

"When you reach 2nd level, you can add one spell of your chosen school to your spellbook. The spell can be of any level that you can cast, and it is in addition to the normal spells gained when increasing your level."

I always thought that you didn't get the two spells per level from a PrC, but that text does seem to confuse the issue.

Regardless, most of the spells in a wizard's spellbook tend to come from scribing them from other spellbooks or scrolls. If you make the appropriate Spellcraft check, you can scribe the spell, altough it takes time and money.

Apr 14, 2008 12:43:24 Yes, I am confused entirely on this because what if the character is not created at level one? Do we count our PrC levels as inherently "wizard levels" when it comes to learning new spells? I was hoping someone might know an official ruling on this.

Especially because I'd hate to start a character and only have spells up to level 3 in my spellbook (since usually Wizard is only a 5 level dip ).

If the PrC includes a line that says something like this:

Deja Vu, this same exact question was asked yesterday. I hope it wasn't you that asked it (via cross posting) and that you simply didn't search or try to find the answer before posting.

1) Yes, read the 3.0 FAQ. So long as the PrC says "+1 spellcasting" you gain new spells known.

2) Yes, see 3.0 FAQ

3) Yes Master Specialist can add one more spells know from the Wizard/Sorcerer spell list as long as it is of their school.
