Hi!
I was thinking *again* about Ice Assassin (hell yeah, spell of the year) and I tought: if I cast it with Eschew Materials, does the creature need to *exist*? I mean, why can't I create a creature that doesn't exist? The spell does not tell you so :D

Ok, I know this is cheesy. But is right btRAW, isn't it?

No. It's not.

If the spell requires a material component that costs more than 1 gp, you must have the material component at hand to cast the spell, just as normal.

Then again, you may need only that material component... not the other ones. Hm.

Material Component: This spell is cast over the ice statue of the creature to be duplicated. Some portion of the creature to be duplicated (hair, nail, and so on) must be placed inside the ice statue as it is constructed. In addition, the spell requires powdered diamond worth 20,000 gp.

Quoted right from the spell. You still need an actuall creature to copy. No making things up.

Plus I believe it's also by RAW that parts of special creatures cost more then 1gp. So no Eschewing a gods toenail.

However the epic ignore material components would do it.

I agree with SiliconMage. According to the spell description on http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fw/20030124a the spell creates a "duplicate of an already existing creature".
However the epic ignore material components would do it.

You might be able to avoid creating a statue and providing diamond dust and bits of the creature that's about to be duplicated, but as it is written, you'd still get a duplicate creature.
Worse, you might've given up control over who it'll be a duplicate of. :D
Magic with a mind of its own.
Scary thought: it might create a duplicate of you.
