Add damage to lance?

Hello all,

I'm not well versed in maximizing my character builds, and am not the most adept player (hadn't played in a few years and wasn't "good" when I did).

I have a halfling knight that I built, planning to become a halfling outrider.

I feel like I didn't optimize my ability scores when building the character, since I wasn't sure what I was going to do with him at first.  Now I have built him into a lancer on my riding dog, but I'm getting poor damage from my mistakingly poor build.

Str 7

Dex 19

Con 16

Int 10

Wis 9

Cha 13

I took weapon finesse in lance to get my dex bonus for my attack rolls, so I hit rather often, but I do very bad damage.  Is there a way I can replace or add my dex bonus to my attack rolls on a lance?  I would even take the Con or Cha bonuses instead.  My DM is pretty nice at fudging things if they need to be fudged, but I don't want to be doing something completely outside of the rules lol.

One of my friends suggested I scrap my  lance and just do ranged weapons, but I'm really liking the lance fighting if I can fix my build.

Anybody have good solutions to fix my damage problem?

You mean knight, the class from Player's Handbook II?  In that case, you're playing 3.5.  In 3.5, weapon finesse isn't taken for a specific weapon.  You gain the benefits of the feat with all weapons that qualify.

In any case, a lance built for a creature your size can't benefit from weapon finesse.  Weapon finesse only works with light weapons and a few weapons that are explicitly listed as exceptions.  Well, there might be a way.  A weapon with the feycraft template is treated as one category lighter for the purposes of weapon finesse.  A lance can be wielded in one hand while mounted, so you could argue that a feycraft lance is treated as light while mounted.  Note that a feycraft weapon costs an extra 1,500 gp and deals less damage.

I can;t think of anything that really helps with the damage.

Bubba00mn,

So, as Maat_Mons indicated, you can't use Weapon Finesse on a weapon that isn't light - and he is also correct that you could get a Feycrafted lance (though the damage for a Halfling sized lance [small] would be 1d4 and I don't think that would help your situation).

You indicated that you are playing a Halfling Knight, but never answered if you were literally playing the Knight class from the Player's Handbook II, or just a Fighter who is using riding feats, or a Paladin.  These are important questions to answer as that determines how we could assist your build.  Also, what level are you now and what levels do you have to work with?

Beyond that, what type of Halfling are you?  I would suggest highly that you be a Stronheart Halfling, as it emmulates the Human bonus feat at level 1.

You indicated that your DM is flexible - and if this is the case, perhaps you could redistribute your stats:

Str 7 (9 base)         =>  15 (17 base)

Dex 19 (17 base)   =>  11 (9 base)

Con 16                   =>  16

Int 10                      =>  10

Wis 9                      =>  9

Cha 13                   =>  13

This would change your bonus to hit with melee weapons from negative to positive (though it's going to be less than what you were getting from when you were attributing your 19 dex) but would also increase your damage from -3 to +2 (5 more damage a hit minimum) and if you're using the lance 2 handed it would increase it by 6, and if you use it two-handed with a Lance while charging your damage would increase by 12, and if you have the Spirited Charge feat it means your damage would increase by 18.

If you're a strongheart Halfling you could further increase this bonus by using your bonus feat for Weapon Focus(Lance) making your chance to hit = (BAB) +2 (Strength) +1 (Size) +1(Weapon Focus) which likely is close to what you are used to except you're now legal, and dealing far more damage per hit.

Please respond to this thread with the information requested so that we may better assist you:

Halflings riding Medium sized creatures generally have no such issues re:dungeon ladders, especially if the mount in question has a climb speed or apposable thumbs.
