| #1spikuApr 13, 2009 12:06:34 | Hello chaps, not quite sure if this is the very best of places to ask, as I'm not seeking specifically to optimize the character in question, but you are the most likely to know how to even acheive what I am after; I've got myself a kobold mine and stronghold to bahamut, and we're about to start a campaign and I'd rather like to know that things aren't going to fall apart in my absence; luckily I have taken the Leadership feat, and a have a 13th level kobold companion with standard kobold stats (which will be modified by stat gains at level 13) that has yet to be designed. What I had planned was an expert with knowledge area, profession miner/administrator/merchant, sense motive, bluff, diplomacy, forgery... you get the idea. The problem is, I'm neighbours to Illithids. So now I'm wondering if there are any prestige classes, magic items, or feats, I should be looking at for him, to grant protection from mind control, detection of the same, preferably things to deal with scrying... it's a lot to be worried about. So far the only thing I've seen is Spymaster, which would add some nice bonuses aganist scrynig and the slippery mind ability. Is there any good foundations for building a character to deal with administration, who can actually keep his mind his own. I'm not necessarily looking to make him able to single handedly take on anything, with nasty combinations of wizarding and what have you, just have a chap I can rely on whilst I'm gone (and have status cast on etc) Thanks for your time. |
| #2thaosyr23Apr 13, 2009 12:17:31 | what stats/magic do you have, what books are available? the kobold companion have a class set in stone? |
| #3spikuApr 13, 2009 12:25:42 | I don't really have access to any additional magic, but I do have max followers, so at least 1 level 6 wizard/cleric for some buffs, not incredible. It has been suggested that my followers will have standard statline, I assume this will be the same for the Companion: Str 9, Dex 13, Con 10, Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 8 (he will have +3 stat points to spend for being level 13) as stated, there are no restrictions yet placed on what he CAN be, other than that he is a kobold, and his role will be my administrator. He has starting cash of a 13th level character; which can be spent on equipment, magic items, having spells cast for us, and we have not been told there are any restrictions on books. I know that people have used lots of "platbooks", and I have been told if it exists in a book, that one of the members has access to the book. He is a kobold, and can't be dragonwrought. anything else needed? |
| #4hijaxxApr 13, 2009 12:38:00 | i suggest necromancer, for tireless manpower. with a 13th level dread necro and, say, 20 charisma, he could control 68 HD of undead. thats 68 human skeletons to work in you mine/defend the stronghold. |
| #5tos_shai_huludApr 13, 2009 12:45:41 | Can he be an Occult Slayer? By 5th level, he would be utterly immune to mind effects (when he wants to be). A cohort usually has PC levels, not NPC levels, so if your DM is not allowing you PC levels, a PrC is going to be a hard sell to your DM, IMHO. But, if you can get it, it is in Complete Warrior. Additionally, a cohort is supposed to get the elite stat array. So, your DM is really gimping your cohort here. If you are going for a skilled character, you will make best use out of a character with a lot of skill points. That is going to be your rogue, your spellthief, your scout, or any other base class offering 8+Int modifier skill points per level. If your campaign includes psionics, I think I remember one of the psionic base classes in Complete Psionics having 8+Int skill points. That might help. The Lurk maybe? I don't recall. A bard could always be useful, as well, since he has spontaneous casting ability and could therefore potentially qualify for dragon disciple. The prereqs for Occult Slayer can be met by any 8th level character (4 ranks of Knowledge: Arcana, 3 ranks of Spellcraft, Improved Initiative, and Weapon Focus with any weapon). This means that your cohort is capable of attaining Occult Slayer 5, making him immune to mind effects. Lords of Madness might have additional information for avoiding illithid attacks. Psionic classes like the Slayer might be worthwhile to check out, as well, but again, only if you are using psionics in the campaign. If you can convince your DM that your cohort is supposed to have the elite array and PC classes, there is a lot more you can do with him. |
| #6spikuApr 13, 2009 13:14:28 | He did not require me to have expert, I had originally chosen expert due to it having a lot of skills, and skill points =P I'm fairly certain that I would be permitted to go for a higher stat array for him, but gimping a cohort isn't a terrible thing, as we're talking about me getting an extra (albeit npc) character for free. Also, he'll be sitting at home all day; it's just a measure of defence I am after. The stats themselves aren't so much as important as knowing what feats, magic items, or classes I should look at to try and construct this chap. Hijaxx: I'd rather avoid undead just because it will disconcert the workers, and killing them for undead is not something my character would want to do ;3 Do necromancers have innate resistance to mind control? TSH: Does Occult Slayer require a BAB? By the looks of it I can meet your listed requirements at level 1 using a stalwart sorcerer for weapon focus. At the moment it sounds great, and Slayer is delicious; making his brain repulsive is perfect for illithids! Thank you for your imput |
| #7thaosyr23Apr 13, 2009 13:20:08 | slayer/ occult slayer are good. Keeper of they cerulean sign is better. his will save should be high enough to avoid mind blasts, there should be some spells that stop them either way. any chance that you can convince your dm that it's not actually a kobold, but a dragon alt. formed into a kobold? wyrmling steel dragons using Wyrm of War option from Dragons of Eberron are nasty. |
| #8dr_rocktopusApr 13, 2009 13:31:13 | I recommend you relocate your mine to the moon, by having your administrator be a buildomancer with a side of teleportation. ;) Do not follow my advice. Seriously. Your GM will come for me. ![]() |
| #9spikuApr 13, 2009 14:00:07 | No way he can be anything but kobold; and that includes being clever with his draconic type to shift him into other races ;D What is Keeper of they cerulean sign from? will I get as far as I need on 13 levels? |
| #10phaedrusxyApr 13, 2009 14:07:06 | Pretty sure the Keeper is from Lords of Madness. You're welcome to use this guy as inspiration. He's a character in a game I'm about to start that permanently possesses our Airship/Stronghold via Haunt Shift. He'll act through a set of Ring Gates and/or his Psicrystal, so he can participate in the adventures while still being trapped within the ship. There is a lot of abusive stuff in there, so I wouldn't suggest using all of it in most games. The main benefit is that he basically is the stronghold, which gives him lots of benefits like being virtually indestructible (unless the stronghold is destroyed), and allowing him to animate a bunch of objects to attack intruders. :D |
| #11thaosyr23Apr 13, 2009 14:43:51 | 13th lvl character can be a wiz 5/CotCS 8 gets detect aberrant taint: can sense aberrations, their Mind effecting spells, or supernatural effects, and willing cultists greater aberration bane magic: more damage +6 dc for spells cast against aberrations mental backlash: if an aberration fails to effect you with a mind effecting spell/SLA, you do a buttload of dmg + nausea 10th lvl, you can destroy aberrations dc 20 + CHA mod I really like the hauntshift idea though |
| #12dr_rocktopusApr 13, 2009 14:45:56 | Where are the rules for hauntshifting? I've dug around a good bit and cannot find them, though that may just be the stupid talking. I'm going to need to read them before I weigh in here. |
| #13thaosyr23Apr 13, 2009 14:49:33 | its on one of the first pages of Libris Mortis |
| #14pithicaApr 15, 2009 8:23:20 | He's a Kobold, play to his strenghths. Kobold Dragonblood Sorcerer 5/Mindbender 1/Incantatrix 7 Take Mindsight as you're 9th level feat, and Draconic Resoivoir as your 3rd, and do the Greater Draconic Rite of Passage. Take a metamagic as your 6th and purchase Otyugh's hole for Iron will, leaving you your 1st and 12th level feats open for whatever. Dragonblood sorcerer grants you Draconic Heritage as a bonus feat (lose your familiar though) at 1st level sorcerer. With the rite of passage, he'll be casting 7ths as a Sorcerer 13, and with Incan, he'll be able to use persist cheese. With Mindsight, he'll be able to see the assassins coming most of the time. Pick spells that work really well for running/defending a stronghold and managing people/money. Wall of Stone/or Iron and Fabricate are the first two that pop in my head. These are things you can use for temporary or permanent BFC's that you can also use for utility (shoring up mine walls), or for money making (as raw material for Fabricate). When he hit's 15, be sure to get him Mindblank, just to keep him from getting turned, and at 16 or 18, if you can afford it, buy a scroll of simulacrum and make a copy of him to act as his valet. The copy can augment his spellcasting of lower level utility spells, and act as a double for incoming assassination attempts. |
