Advice about custumized reserve feat

Hello everyone, I play a Rune master (found that class there https://www.adnddownloads.com/en/resource/55734151-dd68-734e-d047-8ec7c98a7c9f ). It's pretty fun and we've reached lvl 6, almost 7. For my next feat I thought about reserve feats. As I got nice dex, I wanted a few more ranged attack spells and I like fire ones so I came up with a new reserve feat. I wanted others players's advice before talking about it to my DM :

   Fire trail :

Requirements : ability to cast lvl 2 spells.

Benefits : As long as you have a lvl 2 fire spell or higher, you can attempt a ranged touched attack upon a target. If you hit, it takes 1d6/ level of the higher fire spell available. Anyone standing on the first or 2nd space behind the target takes same damages (but Réf save for 1/2 damage).

I'm open to any suggestion, really wants it balanced. Thanks for any answer.

Well, it lacks a range for the attack. With a range of 30 feet it will be very similar to the Fiery Burst reserve feat, but it trades its benefits vs. swarms for the benefit of being good against high reflex/low touch AC targets that are not very common to be honest. I think if you keep the range to 30 feet, you can safely add the +1 competence bonus to caster level checks with fire spells that Fiery Burst has. Seing that the bonus to caster level checks is pretty much always present in the reserve feats (afaik) - this will probably be the most steamlined variant.

The first or the second space behind the target is also a bit un-defined - you mind want to clarify that. Also it is a bit counterintuitive - since it seems to target exactly the creature that is provided by cover from the primary target of the spell.

Also, by taking a quick look at the runemaster though - I am not really sure if it by itself provides the required for the reserve feats spell slot.

All and all - unless it has some very specific interaction with the Runecaster class that you are trying to exploint - it seems like standard (weak) feat and your DM shouldn't have problems with it. You are a caster... taking a feat to become moderately adequate archer is the oposite of broken. The feat does nothing but damage... taking a magic longbow will probably do more with a slight optimising touch.

Hi and thanks for your answer. I think that I posted too fast and so forgotten some details. Of course i thought about a 30 feet range as fiery blast. For the touch attack, it won't be a problem as I got 20 dex so +5. I totally forgot to write about the + 1 competence to caster level checks with fire spells but this feat was supposed to have it.

I shouldhave described the way I see this spell-like ability. The caster creates a small fireball in his hand and throw it at a target. When it touch it, the fire ball completely surround the target and also rush the 2 spaces behind, following the fire ball's direction.

About the prerequisite, Rune masters have 9 schools of spells, and one is "fire or heat". Spells from that school are like burning everything in diferent ways and does fire damages.

For the bow, I thought about getting one with Conductive weapon enhancement, it allows the caster to use spell like abilities that needs a contact attack through the weapon. Ranged attacks works only with ranged weapons and so melee ones with melee weapons. Only usable once a round. The final goal is to be able to use both bow and ability when I needs to keep some spells for later or when I run almost out of them. But needs to talk to my DM to see if it's fine with him but it could be fun (and not that overpowered, that's why I came here to get others players's advice).

Your damage to a second target is probably better summarized as such:  If this hits one adjacent creature (or perhaps just say target) suffers splash damage equal to damage deal with a REF Save (DC = 10 + highest level slot filled with fire spell) for half.

If this is supposed to hit many creatures change the "one adjacent creature suffers" to "all adjacent creatures suffer" as that goes from one target + one extra to a regular AoE.
