| #1dead_weaselDec 17, 2007 15:29:34 | This thread is primarily the work of Me, Myself, & 101 others, which I have reorganized and expanded. Feel free to point out errors or missing information. Although I recognize that Dragon magazine has published a great number of alternative class features as well, I have opted to leave these out (excepting useful links to them in the Miscellany), since they are often disallowed are more difficult to access than normal WotC sourcebooks. You are welcome to discuss or inquire about them in the thread, and likewise to discuss or inquire about subjects related to alternative class features. It is basically the only reason I've ever heard of someone ever taking sorcerer past 5-7 for Prestige Class qualification. I don't think that's quite right either-- from the way I'm reading it, you add your Con bonus to your Charisma score in order to determine your bonus spells. So in other words, if you had a 22 Con and a 24 Charisma, you would determine your bonus spells as if you had a 30 Charisma. Assuming an 18 Charisma and a 16 Con with typical boosts, that puts you at almost exactly one extra spell of each level-- for a 4th level spell. (And, of course, 4 extra levels of sorcerer. ) |
| #13neboDec 18, 2007 20:22:24 | I don't see whirling frenzy for the barbarian. |

So in other words, if you had a 22 Con and a 24 Charisma, you would determine your bonus spells as if you had a 30 Charisma. That's the way I understood it, too. While 4 extra levels of Sorcerer isn't that tempting, this becomes much better if you're going with the Battle Sorcerer variant. A Dream dwarf Stalwart Battle Sorcerer 15/Abjurant champion 5 wouldn't be that bad for those who just want a simple gish build without all the dipping. Lots of hit points, lots of spell slots for Arcane strike, though only a handful of spells known. |

| #19dead_weaselJan 10, 2008 21:45:00 | Alright, I have been working on the Champions of Valor class features for two weeks; now they are complete, and the index is updated. As always, let me know if you find something wrong, so I can fix it. I still intend to go back through all of the old entries and standardize the way the information is presented, but it will likely take a while, and I feel no need to hurry this, because it is a very minor inconvenience to using the data here. |
| #20wihJan 10, 2008 22:42:16 | First of all, very nice job. Unless I'm mistaken, you don't have the Psionic Articifer alternative class features, or for the Spell-thief either - is this intentional? EDIT: Or Unarmed Swordsage, or Arcane Swordsage (though after tying that, I feel like washing my hands repeatedly). |
| #21dead_weaselJan 11, 2008 2:11:43 | Unless I'm mistaken, you don't have the Psionic Articifer alternative class features, or for the Spell-thief either - is this intentional? Well, psionic artificer is up. Psithief was never actually written up by WotC, and the feat of the same name is probably a better investment since it lets you steal either form of power, although it does require manifester level 1. Are Unarmed/Arcane Swordsage WotC-published variants, or just the presumed results of the Adaptation section? I am trying to make the actual, documented variant abilities easier to find; the adaptations are decidedly vague, and involve rebuilding a class independently. I have no intention of listing the suggested adaptations from WotC-published classes, even if I were to restrict myself to the base classes - they are too far away from my goal here, and too much work besides. |

Yeah, they're just from the adaption section, however they both mentioned on the CO boards quite frequently, and the Unarmed Swordsage used quite frequently too. However, I can see your point about not including them. |

| #33the_shamanApr 10, 2008 1:33:03 | The CoV web enhancement has the Golden Hand of Vergadain dwarven rogue sub levels. I'm not sure I can find them here, but they are in the very preview at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20060327a. Overall: gain survival as a class skill 2nd level: lose +1 to reflex save from your level, get FE bonuses vs a certain organization. 3rd level: gain track, lose trap sense. Gain bonuses to track when you'd get trap sense 6th level: lose the BAB bonus from the level, get Urban tracking (using gather information instead or survival, similar to I presume the UA urban ranger) Apart from the 6th level, the sub sounds quite good to me... reflex saves are not a problem for rogues, and trap sense is imo not the greatest ability the class has, especially when you lack a dedicated outdoorsman. 1 BAB for a feat - or something like that - I'm not exactly overjoyed by, however. |
| #34dead_weaselApr 12, 2008 1:49:39 | The CoV web enhancement has the Golden Hand of Vergadain dwarven rogue sub levels. /sigh I should have known that I would miss something that obvious. Thank you for pointing it out. Apart from the 6th level, the sub sounds quite good to me... The beauty of substitution levels is that you simply have the option of exchanging a class feature you would have received for a different one when you take the appropriate level of the class. For example, a dwarf rogue that is a member of the Golden Hand of Vergedain organization gains Survival as a class skill as soon as the character takes ANY of the substitute class features; the character does not have to take all of them, and can select whichever class feature seems appropriate (naturally, from among those for which the character qualifies). This, however, is my reading of the substitution level rules - and your DM may very well disagree. |

| #45dead_weaselMay 11, 2008 20:13:55 | Yeah, a lot of those have since become classes and prestige classes. I like the alternate skill lists though. /shrug The Fighter needs a lot more retooling than a quick fix, but then again I have the tendency to spout a wide variety of strange viewpoints regarding class balance, and I am not about to turn this thread into a personal podium. Instead I have put a link to that .pdf in the Miscellany, since it is easily accessible. |
| #46divisionbyzer0May 12, 2008 1:49:47 | /shrug I'd only take fighter levels when cherry picking to get feats for a particular build. In 2nd edition I found the class boring, and even with the feats I still find the class boring... So I guess they are fine in ,multiclassing I know some who usually play straight fighters... I don't get the appeal. This thread is immensely useful by the way. Good work. I always new trapsense was a bad ability and now I have trapkiller to replace it with. And now when I multiclass barbarians with rogues I can just max one skill instead of worrying about two. |

I drew one up that got Wizard progression off either the Druid or Archivist list, d6 HD, no armor, shield, or martial weapon proficiencies, 4+Int skills, Int based casting, and good Fort and Will saves, with the same BAB and special feature progression as the MR. Wild Empathy is swapped for Lorekeeping (Bardic Knowledge/Lore), and Endurance is out and out dropped, as is the Animal Companion. | #68shadowztaffJul 29, 2009 10:14:45 | so this is my first post on any topic, and i find it appropriate to be placed on this one. i allow many of these variants as well as variant chaining(as long as they are equal). i believe that there is a wealth of knowledge here and have spread the knowledge to quite a few number of people(my gaming group avg's around 16) so i was just saying THANK YOU!!!!! |

| #70kell_kheraptisOct 04, 2009 16:08:24 | Has anyone tried to get a variant chain on a druid that gives it Rage while keeping Wild Shape? I keep running into a brick wall at getting a combat style to get Wild Shape back... |

Doesn't the Druidic Avenger grant rage at the expense of an Animal Companion? You keep Wild Shape. A DM might even allow you to trade the Fast Movement (as barbarian) for the Barbarian variant granting Pounce (mine did). His justification was that since it is fast movement as a barbarian, and a barbarian can drop fast movement for the Pounce variant, a druidic avenger can drop the fast movement for the same variant. Essentially, you become a raging wild shape druid with pounce... not bad!!! |

Well, that second part goes without saying, and I think is even an example in the variant chaining thread. However, getting FULL rage is DM fiat, as just getting level 1 rage with tireless rage later for a whole second set of actions is a craptastic trade. However, if they ok full rage, that becomes a really nice buff. Dragon Cohort, Dragon Wild Shape, Planar Touchstone for Hero Domain, and then start shredding face with +10 Str and Con, Giant Size, all those natural attacks, pounce!, and bite of the werebear. Reckless Rage gives an extra +2 stats in exchange for another -2 AC, right? |
| #73drerisJan 04, 2010 12:13:58 | One thing I noticed, and don't know if this thread is actively being maintained anymore or not, is that you can in some instances swap a feat for a alternate class feature. A Spirit Shaman can take the feat spontaneous summoner and then use it to qualify for druid ACFs that give up spont summon ACF for x (dont remember the ACF but know it exists). If there is an ACF that requires a cleric to give up spontaneous healing, then a druid or spirit shaman could spend a featr to qualify as well. Just some thoughts. Not sure if there are other feats that do the same thing. |

I don't think that technically they could, as alternate class features are part of the class. A spirit shaman is not a druid, even if he can spontaneously summon. So he couldn't take an alternate druid class feature. Now... if it was an ACF that didn't specify what class it was for, like the Skilled City Slicker ACF from the CScoundrel web enhancement, then it would work. But that's the only one of those that I know of that doesn't specify what class it is for. Lenient DMs might let this slide, but I don't think it is really legal. |
