An attempt at a different aspect of the Supermount

I've recently been reading through the books and wondered how to get a better mount. Since I'm probably going to be around sixth level when I acquire the creature in question, I can't expect it to go around having bonus HD to blast with. As such, I began to construct the monster that made my fellow party members cackle with glee. My DM is still trying to find a non-DM fiat way of dealing with it.

Tauric Spell Weaver/Warbeast, Fiendish (LE) 5HD Large Centipede
Base Stats:
Str: 13 AC: 17 |10+5+3-1
Dex: 15 Speed: 50'
Con: 10
Int: 18
Wis: 17
Cha: 16

Special:
Casts as a 17th Level Sorcerer
Chromatic Disk
Spell Weaving
Poison

Now...
Feral, Reptilian, Multiheaded (3), Half-Vampire (no blood sucking), Insectile, Woodling, Monster of Legend (spells {Unless someone thinks there's a better option}), Relfective Hide and Haste {though I'm leaning towards getting increased damage), Half-Troll, {Insert here the purchase of euqipment shown below}, Shadow Creature, Half-Fey, Half-Red Dragon, Voidmind, Hooded Pupil, Half-Green Dragon, Half-Blue Dragon, Half-Black Dragon, Half-Fiend (LE)

Equipment: Fast Leg (Fiend Folio) x 100 (400,000gp)

Result:
Str: 90 HP: 21d12 + (24*21)
Dex: 38 AC: 79|10+14+55
Con: 59 Speed: 1590', 3180' Fly (good)
Int: 31
Wis: 35
Cha: 36
Feats: Multiattack, Improved Multiattack, Improved Initiative, Combat Reflexes, Alertness, Great Fortitude, Fly-by Attack, Greater Fly-by Attack, Improved Fly-by Attack, Improved Natural Attack, Improved Critical (Claw)

Attacks:
12 Claws|+61|3d6+40|19-20/x2

Special Qualities/Attacks of note:
Improved Grab, Pounce, Rake, Rend, Cast as 23rd level Sorcerer

Basically, charge and slaughter... I hope

Tauric allows for free templates cheese, I don't remember specifics but it just does.

Also, you can be:
Half Shadow Dragon
Half Red Dragon
Half Blue Dragon

You get the point, Half all dragons. No point limiting to three. :P

And what class allows you to have a templated creature as a special mount?

I think the point is; how do you get to own this creature? (such as buy it/ class feature). Since its custom there are no price guidelines for it and I cant recall any classfeatures that give you such a monster as a mount (exept that 3.0 forgotten realms Prc.. but even that would require an insane amount of Charisma).

Also Tauric doesnt technicaly work on a Spell weaver since its a monstrous humanoid instead of a humanoid, though you may be able to get around that with more templates.

EDIT: sort of ninja'd by Nanshork :P

I could've sworn you could use a Monstrous Humanoid. Oh well, no loss. Use a Dark One and get six claws with 3d6 sneak attack on each. Grab some levels of rogue and that'll pump the damage. Maybe make a Hideous Blow Warlock

Anyhow, to get it all you need is Special Mount. The rules don't say what kind of creature must be used. To acquire it spend 720 gp for an item of Gate since I carefully built it to be an outsider.

As for multiple Dragon bits, I used what was needed to get the templates I wanted and the d12 HD.

Actually, the rules do say what kind of creature you get with the Special Mount class feature.

The standard mount for a Medium paladin is a heavy warhorse, and the standard mount for a Small paladin is a warpony. Your DM may work with you to select another kind of mount, such as a riding dog (for a halfling paladin) or a Large shark (for a paladin in an aquatic campaign).

That's from the Paladin's Mount sidebar.

You can take feats to enhance your special mount, or to take specific creatures, as with the Dragon Steed feat, but that's it. You can't just apply templates to your mount and say "the rules don't say I can't!". The rules are there to tell you what you can do, not what you can't.

Mindbender could have one as perma-dominated.
It could be your thrall. (Leadership..)
You could play one, tauric still gives free templates.

If your DM allows this, why not take it to the next logical step and play a monster like this yourself? Anyway, i estimate that 99% of DMs will only let you do something like this in an epic game (where it sucks due to lack of spells.)

Ahh yes, and then we read the actual text of Special Mount

Upon reaching 5th level, a paladin gains the service of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal steed to serve her in her crusade against evil. This mount is usually a heavy warhorse (for a Medium paladin) or a warpony (for a Small paladin).

As for the issue of use. At this point, I think it's become more an exercise in trying to create a "mount" creature than anything else.

Guess we where both right: the MM2 version of tauric only allows humanoids, but the Savage Species version allows both humanoids and monstrous humanoids.. just saw that while checking my books.

I do disagree with the fact that the word "usually" allows you to pick any mount though; instead I think it refers to the rules in the DMG that allow for different paladin mounts. But if your DM allows it.. why not I guess.

As for using a spellweaver(thats what it was, right?) all you have to do is apply a template that turns it into a construct (such as Xendrik warforged or other) and then top it off with Incarnate Contruct, placing it's type back at humanoid.

there's a thought...thanks...

As for my DM...he may ban it, he's just trying to find a way other than DM-fiat. If he can't...oh well, he knows that all I really want is for a fast mount that will stop tripping over its legs on the bloody mountain...

This is not Character Optimization, which revolves around creative uses for rules that are in existence, but - I'm not afraid to use the word in this context - Munchkinism, which revolves around dreaming up whatever unbalanced crap you can in that dreary and hapless bit of rulespace which is cordoned off with a razor wire fence bearing a sign reading "No rules beyond this point - Tread with care".

So you found a passage of rules text that wasn't all-encompassing and came up with something you'd like to go there instead of [blank]. Big deal. Nowhere in the rules does it list all the things you can't do when you're dead, right? Doesn't mean you can do a single damn thing after you bought the farm, though.

Newsflash for you: "No rules beyond this point - Tread with care" territory is also "Ask your DM" territory. And I somehow doubt your DM is ready to accept your supposed supermount. And anyway, if he was, then this still wouldn't qualify for this board.

Come back when you're ready to do some actual CO.

Soo... to sum up what you said. "I have nothing useful to add, so I'll go ad hominem because that's always a good method."

Okay, thank you for that helpful insight. Now, I'd like to direct you to the fact that I've been on the boards for over a year now and have contributed to at least one serious CO project. So, when you use phrases like "come back when you're ready to do some actual CO" what you mean is "I'm going to attack you perosnally because I couldn't think of a fact that would work."

I'll direct you to the posts earlier in the thread where it was discussed how one could, in fact, acquire this mount completely in-game. If you didn't bother to read it, fine, but don't go attacking my abilities because you don't like what I have to say. Show me what part of what I said was actually incorrect, please.

Well now to add somthing to this topic, I think no DM would alow such thing, first how the... do you get that mount? I mean did you go and try to capture it yourselve, well I guess as a DM I could allow you to get such mount IF you ever find it, IF you somehow convince it to work for you, then even if you did that the bonus it has are so big that it would gain no benefict of paladin mount, given his int I could just give it a alignment contrary to your paladin and this could prove quite fun for the DM as sudenly the mount of the paladin tries to eat him... you see there are several ways to deal with such nonsense...

and finally when using non standar mount you are suposed to work WITH the DM not at is back, the same with a player deesigning a magic item or spell they work WITH the DM they don´t just creat eit and use it (look i have this lvl 0 spell tha tturn me into a god omg!)

ok but if you still want a powerfull mount, go for the feat for a dragon mont and talk with the DM to get a mount in the same range of power as the dragon with a similar advancment, other way would be for a friednly mage to use polimorph any object on your mount, tough a clever master could take this as a disrispect for your mount and take your mount and you paladin class...

Don´t try to brake the rules to be the ubber powerfull, just play to have fun with a good character, and if you want a goodlike mount, then wait for the higer levels, I still think the dragon mount would be the best (with the feat, maybe even wihtout it, but convincing the dragon might be quite dificult...)

Where to begin? Alright, I'll start with your interestiing statement about my alignment. I'm, perhaps a forgot to mention this, a Paladin of Tyranny (i.e. Lawful Evil). It wouldn't be a stretch to have a PoT decide to unleash this on the world.

Secondly, as for your question about how to acquire it, asked and answered. Seriously. Gate or Planer Binding, Greater would summon this thing and make it work for me long enough to bash it over the head with Special Mount. For that matter, Special Mount, depending on your reading, doesn't specify what you summon. It says that it is usually a warhorse, that is a far cry from "it is a warhorse, nice try about the other things."

As for my DM...he knows he can just DM-Fiat it away, he just would rather prove (without making this stuff up) that I can't use it. To tell the truth, I don't think I'd ever use it in a game at this point, it just wouldn't be as useful as I'd thought. Besides, it loses something when you move over 6,000 feet on a charge...

Um - I think that saying "Nowhere on your character sheet does it say that you can 1) invent a creature, then 2) find it via Gate, then 3) use it as your Paladin mount" is poorly described as being DM Fiat.

The issue that I believe people are having with this is that you don't seem to be following any guidelines other than incorrect logic.

Here's the logic problem broken down:

"This mount is usually a heavy warhorse..." So, mounts are usually warhorses. Therefore, sometimes, they're not warhorses.

1 - Some mounts are not warhorses.

2 - a Tauric Spell Weaver/Warbeast Fiendish Large Centipede is not a warhorse.

3 - Some mounts are Tauric whatchamacallems.

This is a classic fallacy - it has a name (which I'm too lazy to google for), but the short version is - that's not how logic works.

That said, you're only one casting of polymorph away from the mount of your dreams, so optimize ubermounts all you want. Just understand the skepticism that this thought experiment's being greeted with.

:D naive
ok first the alignment, I said contrary, so yea it coudl stil ltry to eat you to rid the world form evil LOL, the DM coudl even give ti a celestial template to make it more powerfull for you XD
second, you think your lvl 6 char will have the money to hire a wizard to make the gate or planar binding for you?, and even if that was the case you think you could BASH that thing into being your mount XD

sure go ahead and try, personally if a player insistedas much as you on something like that I would let him try, but most probably it might be a let down for the player, and maybe a bit dangerous.

finally with the "ussually is a warhorse" it set a precedent not about the kind of mount, but about it´s power, and race, also the feat to allow a dragon mount set more precedents about the mount power without needing extras, so yes the DM hav ethe guidelines to limitate your selection, also the feat leadership gives you a hint of how powerfull the mount should be more or less acording to the player level.

as iconoplast said, you are just out ofplace with this...

I apologize for my earlier rudeness. I was feeling snippy that day, and this thread really got me going. Sorry for that. I mean it.

However, I think the one real point I had to make is still valid: Rules-wise, your "Supermount" is a non-creature born of nullspace. There is simply no rule, guideline, analogue, precedent or whatever to be found anywhere on how this could be made to work. While that doesn't mean it WON'T work, obviously, it is entirely up to your DM to allow or disallow. It isn't covered, it is neither allowed nor forbidden, and there is no known way to get such a creature as a mount. The creature might exist in your DM's campaign, and you might go out and find it. But the bare fact that templates can be applied to make a creature doesn't mean your DM will do so. Gate or Polymorph Any Object might work; or they might not, if they require the caster to know what he's calling/creating in your campaign, or if they require such a creature to exist somewhere in the multiverse in the first place. Again, it's up to the DM.

Things that are entirely up to the DM in this sense are not good CO material. I still hold that what you're trying to do in this thread, while it pursues a perfectly legitimate question, does not pursue CO. You could just have asked "what, in your opinion, would be the awesomest creature ever that you could still ride on?". By asking for a special mount for your variant Paladin instead, you invite such an answer as the one I gave earlier.

*nod nod* accepted. I happen to disagree, but now I do so on intellectual grounds, so I'm happy :D I happen to think that it would be far from impossible for someone to summon this thing with a Gate spell, after all, it is a pretty specific creature. We know that in D&D almost anything can exist, so by default this thing is conjured from the realm of things that are possible, just as a normal mount is. After all, the normal mount is summoned from null-space. There's no statement about from wence it comes.

If it comes down to being too high a level...I could redesign it to have only six HD. It would lose four claw attacks, but that would drop nine HD from it in exchange.

As for how to get the thing via Gate...I can get it cast by a twentieth level caster for...<720gp... I specialize in making low-cost magic items...

Ya know aside from the fact that the mount is well Holy Cow!

What I really want to know is how having a tuaric template means you can add free templates? I have read both books that have it and I can't find anywhere were it says it gets free templates. Could you elaborate on how that works, cause I was thinking of making a tauric Bear in my next game.

Only the LA from one side, don't remember which at the moment, gets applied. It isn't all that great, though, because it has to end up as a Magical Beast/Humanoid or Monstrous Humanoid.

What I did was I applied templates in a specific order so that the creature qualified for each of them legitimately. Then I tacked on Half-Fiend at the end so it could be an outsider and therefore be summoned via Gate.

Me, I would use Shades to emulate Greater Planar Binding.
Since Shadow spells actually create summoned creatures and objects out of shadow stuff, the fact that this monstrosity had not exited in the multiverse before I cast the spell would be irrelevant.

On the Mount Thing:there are lists of acceptable mounts. What you have done here is strictly in the realm of DMs fiat.

Also, I believe the Polymorph wouldnt work due to the templated nature off the beast.
