An Interesting Challenge: An Intelligent Weapon Artificer

That's right, an intelligent weapon artificer. Not like a character who crafts intelligent weapons. An intelligent weapon who is an artificer.

I'm devising a character for a future game, and that's what I came up with, but I need some ideas on what I should do, what I should take for feats and so forth.

Here's what I've got so far:
Race: Intelligent Weapon. Which weapon is up in the air, I'll take suggestions on that. My DM will let me roll Int/Wis/Cha normally, with no Str/Dex/Con score, treated as a construct, no movement of its own, no Level Adjustment, hardness as the base item (which comes out of my starting money). I'm not sure if I'll get lesser and greater powers as an intelligent item, it might cut in too far into my funds to pay for both the number of powers available and the powers themselves.

Class: Artificer. I want to be able to make magic items, for the ironic factor. But you can suggest something else that might be better. No Divine or Arcane casters however, the campaign I'm in has a homebrew caster class that I don't care for that much.

Feats: At 6th level, taking Leadership for the cohort to drag me around. Cohort will be some sort of fighter-type, I'll take suggestions on him as well. Or, suggestions on alternate cohort equivalents would work just as well.

Any book is allowed, just like I said, no arcane/divine casters. Psionics, Incarnum, Tome of Battle and all that are fair game, though.

Suggestions for what to make are also sought, how should I enchant myself? What else should I make? What item slots should I have myself? (I don't think I'd have any, but I could be mistaken) Could I make myself my own Item Familiar?

Thanks guys, look forward to seeing your advice ^^

iv no idea how to build this, so i cant help with that..

but, on a related note... a cleric in a stick would be handy... or rather an intelligent holy symbol that all heals / turns and all that good stuff..

your artificer needs the ability to alter self in someway, AS/poly/shape ... so it can get mobile.. and get hands..

I ran a warforged character where the docent was the dominant personality. That could serve you very well.
Make the warforged a crusader for energizer type durability, and then the docent would be able to take control of the warforged as needed to utilize the body for crafting.
The one fiat was that if the docent controls the warforged's body, the cohort recedes, and thus can only perform as an artificer.. switching roles would be as fast as the DM pleases... but full round action makes it inconvenient to switch out midcombat... the docent would just piggy back and infuse the crusader as it goes about slaughtering stuff.

This makes for a pretty mean Gish... the docent can grant an extra standard action to pump infusions into the cohort as needed.

Docents use the intelligent item rules, with some added perks.
It's not a weapon, but it resolves virtually all your difficulties, and allows you to have quite a bit of flexibility in what you can do. Just focus on bufficer and crafting, and when putting the cohort together, be mindful that none of the body feats will screw up artificer activities while dominating the cohort.

The Harden Spell and the Augment Object Spell will be good for keeping the Sunderers at bay.

Also, you could potencially go for the whole Haunt Shift trick to put yourself into a sword if you prefered, and actually be a different race entirely.

You may also want to add small hands and such to the sword, allowing you to potencially wear a little bit of gear.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I did find the Hardening spell you suggested, JaronK, and that'll be great for the character. But where is this Augment Object spell?

Also, for those who suggested shapeshifting, that'd kinda defeat the point, wouldn't it? Warforged too are out, while those were some interesting suggestions, I definitely don't want to play "through" another character. The temptation of having a talking sword or the like is just too great (anyone remember Lilarcor from Baldur's Gate?).

'Can we go kill something now, huh?'

"Wanna go kill that over there? Come on! Let's kill SOMETHING!"

Only thing I can think of is to get your Ego as high as possible. That'll justify you making your wielder go do something YOU want to do.

Can a Bone Knight's armor be made Intelligent? Because being grafted to your user can have its advantages, especially with respect to targeting. I don't think you can sunder the Bone Knight's armor since it's a part of him as a class feature (IIRC).

Stronghold Builder's Guide. Doubles an objects HP and Hardness. Lasts 1 day per caster level. VERY good idea.

Very nice. I think between that and the Hardening spell, I'd have it made. I could make a 1/day item for Augment Object that'd cost 6,000. Or just scrolls of it would do just as well, as they'd last 5 days for each application. So scrolls of it would be 375 gp each. Pack on a number of those and I'd be set.

Hardening would be a harder one, being a 6th level spell I wouldn't be able to make an item to duplicate it until 9th level at least... Oh well...

Assuming, say, an adamantine sword, 6 levels of Artificer (HD replacing item HP), with Augment Object on, I'd have a Hardness 40, and a max of 72 hp. I think that's fair enough.

Thanks again JaronK, I think that covers it for self-protection. :D

Or, a sword made out of obdurium with augment object on, makes 60 hardness. Hardening is also permanent, so just cast the spell.

I wouldn't be able to just cast the spell, because the typical divine/arcane casters don't exist in this world, unfortunately. Items still duplicate the spells, for ease of simplicity, though. I can't make a scroll of it either, until 9th level.
