| #1j2.504Jul 17, 2010 18:32:43 | As the topic shows, I found an extremely lame magic item, and wanted to share. What's your most useless magic item or expensive piece of equipment? Savage Species pg 56: Fairy Gold It costs 4950 gp. It essentially creates a bag of "fools gold" that Fey automatically can detect, and the illusion lasts 8 hours after the bag changes hands. Will save DC 19. The best part? It only creates from 1 to 100 fake gold coins. Let's do the math. Best case scenario, you can pay 4950 gp to trick someone into thinking you paid them 100 gp. So, in essence, you can pay for a 100gp item/service with this bag of fake gold, at the cost of 4950 gp. Awesome! Now, I could have seen some usefulness if it produced a bag of extremely valuable gems, and the magic item cost an appropaite amount. Obviously this bag shouldn't allow someone to walk around tricking everyone for 10,000gp left and right. I could also see some value in it if it automatically returned to the user after a certain time period had passed. But, in essence, this is a one use item for the owner. It could be used creatively to gain other very limited uses, but still... Lastly, in theory they could have intended the bag to be a "cursed"/trick item to be left in treasure hoards. But that was obviously not the case, otherwise the value of the bag should have been equivilant to the gold inside, not 5k gp. I guess the fool is the item creator/owner, not the end recipient. The only way I could see this item having any value as/is, is if the end recipient can remove gold from the bag, then walk away with it for 8 hours before the illusion wears off. But left the bag and it's illusion contents still in the hands of the owner. This way, the trick could be repeated multiple times by the owner (on different people of course). That would have value. Am I missing something in the text, saying this is possible? |
