Jun 14, 2009 20:12:09 Now, I've seen Aptitude thrown around for all kinds of feat chains and such, but has anyone thought about using it to gain less exotic effects?

Improved Unarmed Strike

Benefit

You are considered to be armed even when unarmed —that is, you do not provoke attacks or opportunity from armed opponents when you attack them while unarmed. However, you still get an attack of opportunity against any opponent who makes an unarmed attack on you.

In addition, your unarmed strikes can deal lethal or nonlethal damage, at your option.

Normal

Without this feat, you are considered unarmed when attacking with an unarmed strike, and you can deal only nonlethal damage with such an attack.
Special

A monk automatically gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat at 1st level. She need not select it.

A fighter may select Improved Unarmed Strike as one of his fighter bonus feats.

Now, this may be an extremely liberal take on it, but could you con your way into using this combination to avoid attacks of opportunity while firing a ranged weapon/whip in melee?

At base I could see this as being an expensive and terrible merciful weapon, but it does lead into some of the unarmed strike feat chains like round house kick, snap kick and the like without problems (for melee weapons) does it not?

Aptitude never asks for feats that have the format name Something (). It asks for feats that only apply to a specific weapon.

(Of course, there's the argument that the feat never mentions unarmed strikes in its benefit...)

Jun 15, 2009 21:44:03 If nothing else, it specifically says that you can inflict lethal or nonlethal damage with unarmed strikes. If you had an aptitude bow and needed to capture somebody, having the wizard cast heroics (Improved Unamed Strike) would let you capture them with nonlethal damage.
