The DM is allowing us to use any WoTC and Dragon Magazine Printed material for 3.5e. Any race and template of maximum LA +1. I am tempted to go for the Dragonwrought Kobold Loremaster venerable gold dragon build. But I have not played in a long time. Any suggestions would help.

The game is meant to get into high levels and the characters start at level 2 with a 32 point buy and must have at least one level of artificer.

Here is a link to the setting.

I've always played direct combat capable characters before, I am finding it hard to create a backstory, much less choose a race for this character.

Yeah, artificer is complicated.

If you are used to doing melee, congrats! artificer can do that. Just, like Tempest said, its complicated.

Your setting sounds like you went to hogwarts and graduated. So I'd recomend being a student who wants to build the greatest suit of battle armor ever. Your senior project was your prototype. Its painted in the theme of your mentor, The Iron Gaurdian, a striking gold and red. After his disappearance at the hands of his arch-rival the evil Yellow Face Lich, a mystical mage with command over 10 rings of power, you have vowed to take up his cause. Protecting the planar realms from the forces of evil.

Basically drop like 15 hits in your backstory that you want iron man armor. Your DM will most likely give you something thats way overpowered with a few random abilities you don't care about and can ignore.

Then spend your time crafting sweet armor, gauntlets, helms, boots, belts, and capes. You can also use repulsor wands.

I googled iron man artificer and got a ton of hits. This looked solid but drop the warforged stuff and hope your DM gives you sweet armor if you want.

This has some random advice I'd read.

Here is a character portrait for extra bonus points.
