So far I have Paladin 5/Beastmaster 2/Ashworm Dragoon 10/Paladin 3 The idea is a champion of justice who rides an ashworm... simple lol. With this however, using devoted tracker and natural bond is this the most efficient way? Human only by the way |
| #2Slagger_the_ChuulApr 03, 2012 21:04:19 | You could probably swap the second dose of paladin for wild plains outrider to get a few extra benefits. It's a little annoying to invest the Track feat (much like the Skill Focus required for beastmaster), but wild plains offensive is a nice counterpart to the full mounted attack ability of the ashworm dragoon. The former can only be used with a melee weapon, while the latter doesn't allow you to charge; with both, you can either charge into melee (combining it with spirited worm/Spirited Charge for extra damage) or hang back with ranged attacks and still have a full attack with your move. And its better overall than more levels in paladin. ![]() |

| #4Slagger_the_ChuulApr 04, 2012 2:43:52 | Is it better to stack the paladin with wild plains or beastmaster? Assuming you're asking whether to use wild plains outrider to boost special mount (from paladin) or animal companion (from beastmaster) improvements on your ashworm, they're about even. The ability, natural armour, and Hit Die boosts are about the same, with the animal companion side giving you one secondary sting attack and the special mount side giving you improved speed (making your mount even more mobile, since the wild plains outrider also includes a speed boost, and neither one is restricted). You've got a choice between your mount having an extra sting attack at -5 (from its normal attack), or being 20 feet faster with all movement types, both of which are very useful. I'd favour boosting your special mount side for the speed, since mobility is part of the point of having a mount (especially when yours has both a climb and a burrow speed) and will help when combining wild plains offensive with spirited charge, since your mount can only take a single move to reach the enemy. Also if that's the case, gloves of endless javelins or whatever it's called? As a convenient way to make ranged attacks? They're certainly a viable option, especially if you're normally wielding your lance (I assume you're using a lance) with two hands, or can otherwise free one of your hands at a moment's notice. Even if you have to put your lance away, it still saves you the extra time spent drawing a bow. The downside is that javelins, like most thrown weapons, have a relatively short range increment (and can only go to five range increments, in case that matters) compared to popular projectile weapons. That can leave you taking penalties when using ranged attacks against foes that you can't easily approach. |

| #6Tempest_StormwindApr 04, 2012 12:19:52 | The usual "amazing mount" trick involves levels in Halfling Outrider with Devoted Tracker. The reason is that Halfling Outrider stacks with both paladin and druid levels for special mount and animal companion powers, and Devoted Tracker sets them to the same creature. I haven't sat down to do the math on this yet, but consider Paladin 5 / Beastmaster 1 / Ashworm Dragoon X / Halfling Outrider Y (where X+Y=14) with Natural Bond and Devoted Tracker; select X and Y whichever balance you like that gives you the ideal class features and the best mount progression. It's a bit feat intensive, but strongheart halflings are as good as humans in the feat department. (You take a slight Strength hit, but mounted characters tend to get enough bonuses on their own that a slight Strength hit isn't all that severe.) One thing that's worth noting: Although you can designate your ashworm as your special mount, Ashworm Dragoon does NOT stack with paladin levels for that purpose. You need 5 paladin levels to even get the mount, which is a lof of levels to sink into something else and not a lot of bang if you stop right there, so we add something that advances that mount. Halfling Outrider is just a stand-out example, since it also advances animal companion levels if you have it - and it's possible to get a pretty high animal companion level with just a single level dip into Beastmaster and Natural Bond. That gives you a lot of extra HD on your ashworm and a host of mounted class features (I think those are more useful on the ashworm dragoon myself, though, so I'd err more on that side.) Thus, a pretty basic case of Pal 5 / Beastmaster 1 / Dragoon 10 / Outrider 4 would have an Ashworm level of 10, a Special Mount level of 9, and an Animal Companion level of 11 for a total of +20 HD. (Meanwhile, Pal 5 / Beastmaster 1 / Dragoon 4 / Outrider 10 would have an Ashworm level of 4, a Mount level of 15, and a Companion level of 17 for a total of +22HD, but a different array of class features.) With all that said, I couldn't resist: Fair, pobably the mobility yes... the gauntlet was an idea based on something I had in mind before. A burrowing scout that'd pop up and hurl them :P |
| #7ObsidianConspiracyApr 04, 2012 14:53:15 | The problem being that I want efficiency and not broken, which none of these builds would be.. there is nothing boken about a decent mount. BUT also we can't play halflings. Heh yeah I just couldn't work out how to get a burrow speed on a scout for 0 ECL |

(You take a slight Strength hit, but mounted characters tend to get enough bonuses on their own that a slight Strength hit isn't all that severe.) The inability to be a halfling in this particular case aside, halfling outrider would be better for this build if it had something to match the wild plains outrider on charging attacks, or if there was enough pre-epic room to really milk it on the dual animal companion/special mount advancement. But with 10 levels of ashworm dragoon as an integral part of the build, the wild plains outrider does really well with wild plains offensive (for lance charging) and its mere 3-level investment. |
| #9ObsidianConspiracyApr 04, 2012 21:28:23 | Awesome, that's good because I've always overlooked the wild plains outrider, not sure why. Still I know roughly how I want it all built now. Thanks for the help. The main reason I need the ashworm as a special mount is to be able to summon it in rather than have it around at all times (Setting reasons). Anyway thanks guys, this one is getting played, turns out we're starting at level 15, so I'll be pretty strong by the point already (Not wizad strong though) |
