There is a wonderful thread on this board called Assassin the profession vs. Assassin the PrC. This being said there were several interesting questions asked without answers and work was never finished. Final answer was never found. Let's find the solution and lets answer those questions. Here is the deal:

If a character where to persue contract killing as a profession and by that I mean that they eliminate targeted sentient creatures for personal gain, they face alot of challenges. For low levels, thugs with some backstab and a death attack with a bit o poison on the side, gives PCs nightmares. However for the truly challenging jobs? The barb chieftain that refuses to give up his lands, the vampire lord running the cities underworld activities or the affluent wizard selling low priced magical items and shifting the balance of power. These types of targets could have immense fort saves, immunity to criticals, and/or the magic spells/items/powers to really vaildate the high price you are charging for your service.

The question is if the Assassin PrC is the right choice for making the a professional assassin under realistic settings. How does disintigrate or power word kill compare to death attack or does anti magic field just automatically count magic dependant solutions out? Perhaps just sneak up then rage/frenze, wake up and wash off the pieces. But how about escaping alive? I know that a specialist would probally have a easier time for each one but if you where trying to pick up as many high profile hits as possible, over specialzation will limit you.

THE CHALLENGE! FIRST CHALLENGE:

To create a build for your Perfect assassin needs to be able to:

1. Locate target

2. Infiltrate or bypass security

3. Kill target (the more permanently the better), consider facing some of the builds you find on this forum.

4. Escape and stay alive to collect your earnings.

5. Be able to do all of the above without being seen if if the assignment requires that no one see the assassin

6. Be able to do all of the above regardless of if the target is protected by Anti Magic fields or in resides inside dead magic zone.

7. Be able to do all of the above in realistic settings which mean with a police force, a very centralized government, and law-abiding citizens.

Level? (I think showing the value of the build at several levels would be best). That's a pretty weird book list. Is this just to make a character for a game?

Edit: Ah, I see the second challenge doesn't use that. Ok. Fair enough.

First one is more challenging with second one being easier as I think people are used to 3.5.

If you have a lacky...
Mind **** the lacky now regards the target as his closest, dearest companion/love. Empowered, Maximized, Quickened, Love's Pain via Metamagic Rods followed by Empowered, Maximized, Love's Pain. Target just took (in 6 seconds) 120 damage plus another 20d6/2 damage from infinite range. Repeat as neccessary. Target, for those who wonder, gets no save or spell reisitence.

Well scrying is obviously the best bet for being able to locate someone, but within a dead magic zone I suppose were assuming he can be found with gather information? Are we assuming only the target is in the anti magic zone? Could we still tie up/torture a guard for information? Perhaps even suggesting him to tell us where exactly the target is?

The hard thing about bringing an assassin into dnd is that every character is essentially an assassin. We all are given "targets" to either kill or convince to stop doing something. Since DnD is so focus'd on combat its hard to make a character that can cover every angle, especially since 99% of other builds out there are doing the same thing. A build that focus' on mass damage is just as an effective assassin as one that focus' on poison, all depends on the specific objectives. Throwing houses around with a hulking hurler can be discreet if no one lives to tell about it.
