| #1starchild426Apr 17, 2008 15:09:23 | Well, our last campaign just got wiped(love when that happens), so we are starting over. I decided to go with an Astral Deva based on the lvl progression in Savage Species pg 155. Some minor tweaks from the DM to make it 3.5, but pretty much the same thing. What I was curious about is The Deva gets 5 feats. The first feat I took was weapon focus for the falchion. I need help on what I should do for the next 4. Not a big selection so i want to make them count. Current stats Str 14 Dex 12 Con 14 Wis 11 Int 12 Cha 10(including the +2 from starting as Deva) Deva gets feats at 1st, 3rd, 7th, 13th, and 19th corresponding base atk is +1, +3, +6/+1, +9/+4, +12/+7/+2 Also, any skill tricks or anything else you think adding to this character would help it out would be all very good suggestions. Thanks. |
| #2wihApr 17, 2008 18:04:16 | IIRC the Deva's Stun ability only works with Maces. Perhaps capitalize on this, and pick up Three Mountains, though this will use up all your feats. If Flaws are allowed, you'll also have all the pre-reqs for Shock Trooper. |
| #3starchild426Apr 17, 2008 19:54:52 | Thanks for the input thus far....I checked and the description for stun just says a melee weapon so it doesn't have to be a mace. No flaws allowed. Three mountains isn't too bad though. Any other suggestions??? anyone? |

Three mountains isn't too bad though. Any other suggestions??? anyone? Stun (Su) If it's getting house ruled to any weapon, then I'd personally aim for TWF and Two Weapon Rend. Hit as many people with both your weapons as possible to force both a save vs stun and extra damage. Kusari Gama will give you reach with this, but cost a feat. |
| #5atomickitkatApr 18, 2008 11:53:22 | Why not go with Lightning Mace? Although I think that will take up another Feat via Weapon Focus. :/ |
| #6starchild426Apr 18, 2008 16:48:30 | ok, thanks so far for the ideas...I am sticking with the falchion. The stun does work with any melee weapon according to the description in Savage Species. So far I have the weapon focus:falchion feat I know there are plenty of you out there with genius ideas. I know I have read them. I also know there isn't much breathing room in the way of choices seeing as how there are so few feats given. Anyone else got any ideas? |
| #7runestarApr 18, 2008 20:40:00 | According to savage species, its stun ability works with any weapon. Three mountains is an interesting idea, but you only get the feat towards the end, and the dc is not all that stellar (because you don't really have a lot of HD, though your high str more than makes up for it). Not a big fan of it in this context. |
| #8starchild426Apr 22, 2008 19:59:25 | I was thinking pretty much the same RuneStar. I am picking up the leadership feat at 7th lvl just because of the pure and simple fact that the party is real light on healing. So I just need to figure out a feats, not necessarily paths, that would be most useful. Still looking for suggestions. |
| #9runestarApr 22, 2008 22:09:45 | Well, I suppose you can't go wrong with general purpose feats, rather than try to work your way up some gimmicky feat tree (while it looks attractive forcing the enemy to make 2 saves to avoid being stunned and sickened, it is difficult to connect as you must hit him twice, and fort saves are made fairly easily in the game). I am a little leery about power attack. Normally, it is a very useful feat, but here, your astral deva already has a mini inbuilt PA system. Your +8LA means that you are -8bab behind, while your +12str gives you +6 to-hit and +9 damage (with a 2-handed weapon), meaning that you are effectively already PA'ing for 4 with every hit. You may not be able to use PA anymore without seriously compromising your ability to reliably hit your foes. You get fly at 4th lv, which paves the way for flyby attack at 7th lv (when you get your 6th HD). This will probably constitute your main means of attack. You don't really have the hp to take lots of hits (even with your dr, resistances and obscenely high AC), so your typical strategy will probably be move-hit-move away. Shun the full attack option unless you are sure you can finish off your foe in that round. It helps that you have an excellent fly speed as well. This means that the enemy cannot consistently make full attacks on you, if at all (when you are fast enough). Likewise, consider using a reach weapon or maybe take improved flyby attack at lv13 if you don't want to provoke too many AoOs (because many monsters have superior reach themselves, and the suggested tactics above can result in you provoking up to 2 AoOs each round. ![]() Alternatively, against such foes, simply hang back and snipe with your SLAs. Also, because flyby attack lets you perform standard actions (as opposed to spring attack), you may contemplate taking those maneuver-granting magic items from tome of battle to round out your melee attacks. You don't really have a high IL, but some of the lower lv strikes are still fairly useful (such as foehammer, emerald razor or steel wind). Since you only get 1 attack each round, might as well make the most out of it. More may come later as I gather my thoughts.:P Just to confirm - you know what the SS astral deva is missing, right? That +8 dex, it not becoming large at lv19, no immunity to electricity (just resistance), and houseruling that racial int increases grant bonus skill points retroactively. ![]() |

This I did get from the DM...and thank you again for your input. I was looking for more of the general purpose feats. You gave me some good ideas...i would love to be able to pick up flyby at 7th but thats gonna have to wait since I need to pick up leadership for a healing cohort. Only healer is a druid and from what I understand, not gonna be the best healer...going more melee oriented. |

Well, in that case...A Player's Guide to Healing (And, why you will be Just Fine without a Cleric to heal).:P What about your feats at 1st and 3rd lv? Weapon focus does not seem terribly useful. And are you using...23 point buy?!? ![]() I am currently weighing the effectiveness of robilar's gambit. While you will only get it at lv19, it seems very useful, especially considering that 1) you tend to provoke AoOs with your flyby attack, and 2) with your very high AC, the foe will likely miss you anyways, while you still get an extra attack, which 3) might be enough to trigger your stun attack. This also makes taking combat reflexes at lower lvs more attractive (and it is already a very useful feat in itself). |
| #12starchild426May 19, 2008 15:58:13 | Sorry it took me forever in getting back to this... Well I talked to the DM, dumped WF(falchion). Thus far, because of people in my group having r/t issues we haven't been able to get together to play so I am only at 2nd lvl. I took dodge instead of WF. At 3rd I am looking at Mobility. Still stuck on 7th, 13th & 19th. I want to squeeze flyby atk in there and I would like to grab leadership. Just because it adds another body and it fits the theme of the campaign with this character. From playing this character thus far in the current party configurations with play styles I am noticing that a bump to the HP would help, AC is always good, but that will come with the NA from the class. As always any suggestions as to feats to look into, skill tricks to look at, or any other ideas are always welcomed. |
| #13wihMay 19, 2008 19:08:32 | If you're going to go with Mobility and Flyby Attack, try and get Improved Fly-by Attack. |
| #14empirateMay 20, 2008 6:41:31 | I have a suggestion that might be a bit off-topic: Why not be a Ghaele instead? Ghaele Eladrins are quite superior to Astral Devas in my opinion, if only for the fact that they cast spells as a 14th level Cleric! The Savage Species progression is quite similar for both creatures, but the Ghaele has a spell progression running alongside that allows him to double as a divine caster. The Ghaele's DR is much better than the Astral Deva's, too: 10/evil and cold iron, as opposed to 10/evil only. So it might actually be useful... So basically, you'd be playing a Cleric with less HP, but better BAB and saves, with Martial Weapon proficiency, huge stat boosts, SLAs on top of your spells, angely stuff galore (resistances, DR, SR...), a weak gaze attack for crowd control, and the alternate form of an incorporeal ball of light flying as fast as a dragon and shooting light rays. You could be the healer, if you wanted (through cleric spells and your CLW at will SLA), and you could do lots of other useful stuff, too. Also, Ghaele are "always chaotic good", which satisfies your alignment stipulation. |
| #15bobvoshMay 20, 2008 10:30:43 | You can go for tank with a great AC and use goad to force them to attack you, put that charisma to use. |
| #16lordofteaMay 21, 2008 3:58:49 | the deva from my game uses a falchion too. She has gotten great use out of her powerful crit ability in combination with the keen enchantment. The high strength makes for some devastating crits. also note that you only need to hit twice PER ROUND to activate the stun. Getting robilars gambit, karmic strike, combat reflexes or even ye olde haste spell is going to help tremendously with that. also, see if you can get a friendly spellcaster to cast mage armor on you (hell, get him/her a rod of extend for it). That should pump up your ac comfortably in the tank range. if you can afford to put some more points in charisma, consider the goad feat. It doesn't really mash with stun, but it might still be worthwile for a dedicated tank if you want to learn more about the deva in my party, check out my co diary http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1031288&highlight=godly+servant |
| #17tytalusMay 21, 2008 9:26:40 | I'm surprised nobody has mentioned: Ability Focus: Stun |
| #18runestarMay 21, 2008 9:36:19 | I'm surprised nobody has mentioned: Ability Focus: Stun Only if you plan on building your astral deva around its stun ability. I noted earlier that its dc would stink at higher lvs (because most MM monsters get obscene fort saves), so ability focus is of limited use if the monster is going to be failing its save on a natural 1 anyways (at ECL20, its dc is just 30 with 38str, or 32 with ability focus). |
