Hey I wanna thank everyone for their help, you see I dont wanna sound dumb to my bf I wanna make it sound like I get what hes saying when really he just complicates everything, so Im looking for someone to make this easier, basically how does the whole multiclassing saves work, he said something about doing fractions and looking at great and horrible saves, but then it got me confused when he went over it and I just said "uhuh yes honey i get it" when really i have no clue, so how does it work if I go from a ranger to scout obviously I cant just say (mind you that im making numbers up) Oh the ranger gets a base fortitude of 2 at level 2, and then look at the rogue who gets like 0 and be like um well that means its a 2, or just completely fib my answers taking a hit on the actual fort, like what if at level 8 im supose to have a 10 fort and I keep shaving points off, I kind of poke myself in the butt, and that's NOT at all pleasant so please help again, any kind of chart or something, of if you know I could like PM you and explain my build, I dont want him seeing it on this board after all otherwise I'd post it

There are a few ways to deal with the saves, but it mostly comes down to what the DM wants it to work. The simplist way to figure out your base save is to add up the value for the save from each class. That is, if you take a single level in two classes, say a ranger and a rogue like in your example, the ranger provides saves of Fort-2 Reflex-2 Will-0 and the rogue provides Fort-0 Reflex-2 Will-0. Putting them together you get Fort-2 Reflex-4 Will-0. Just simple addition.

The fractions are from a variant rule for calculating saves. Good saves (the saves that start at 2 on first level) provide an extra 1/2 to your save each level. Bad saves (ones providing 0 at first level) provide an additional 1/3. To figure out your saves from there, start off with 0, add 2 to the save if any classes have it as a good save, each level from classes where it is a good save add 1/2, then add 1/3 for each level from classes where it is a bad save. Any time in game where you use the save, round it down and work from there.

Using the same classes as before, the ranger provides saves of Fort-2 1/2 Reflex-2 1/2 Will-1/3 and the rogue provides Fort-1/3 Reflex-2 1/2 Will-1/3. Then putting them together gives you Fort-2 5/6 Reflex-3 Will-2/3, in game that is Fort-2 Reflex-3 Will-0.

The latter does provide slightly lower 'good' saves, but the 'bad' ones become far better as you progress.

Actually, the variant in Unearthed Arcana still gives you +2 for each class that has a good progression for the save. Only gaining the +2 once is merely a popular house-rule.

Summed it up perfectly. Glad you did, too; I was sitting here reading OP's question going, "How do I explain this?" (just woke up, hehe)

I wouldn't worry about the variant business unless you've been told it's in effect. And it is awesome you're taking this amount of interest in your boyfriend's hobbies. I wish I could get my wife too... heh.

There is a "D&D 3.5 for dummies" that is actually very usefull. I have handed a copy to a couple new players and it helped them imensely...even had a couple tid bits I wasn's sure about as well. You can also try the "Character Class: Facing a character sheet" in the Character class archive: www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/c... . Also here are tips and explanations for diferent clases that might help you better understand your characters role. Also if you need to PM me your build I am more then glad to help. Everyone has to start somewhere. BTW you might try posting stuff like this on the Previous Editions Forums community.wizards.com/go/forum/view/7588... and not on the CO board since some people might get anoyed at that.
