May 09, 2008 10:53:43 Ok, my friend asked me for help with trying to make a character who uses a Bag of Holding as a weapon. He basically wants to open the bag and cover the baddies with it and close it up. I told him this wouldn't work too well since all they would have to do is put a hole in his bag. I suggested a Portable Hole as a better option.

I searched the boards to the best of my ability and could not find anything that would work with this. I could have missed something as I am only human (but I'm working on that).

I was thinking something along the lines of a Fighter focusing on grapple (to get the hole around someone) then taking the Exotic Weapon Prof feat as portable hole (if the DM would allow, but then the only person who we know thats stupid enough to allow him to try these kind of things is me, so yes I would allow him to take Ex Weap Prof (Portable Hole)).

Any real suggestions or did I miss something on the forums here that I should go back and take a look at? Please if you don't want to help, just don't post anything. I am just trying to help a friend and it would be nice if I didn't get like 10 replies of just people flaming me for being stupid or something.

Incidentally, portable hole wouldn't work as it has to be spread out on a flat surface to gain access, otherwise it's just cloth. So no throwing it over enemies, I'm afraid.

I grapple baddie. Oops, baddie fell into my chestplate. Alternatively: I walk up to baddie. I drop my 6 foot tall portable hole covered tower shield on him... no more baddie...

Right there in the DMG. Although I did get it the wrong way around - you need to put the portable hole in the bag of holding.
If a bag of holding is placed within a portable hole a rift to the Astral Plane is torn in the space: Bag and hole alike are sucked into the void and forever lost. If a portable hole is placed within a bag of holding, it opens a gate to the Astral Plane: The hole, the bag, and any creatures within a 10-foot radius are drawn there, destroying the portable hole and bag of holding in the process.

No, he means the "Lay the hole on a flat surface" part.

As to putting the hole in the bag, turning the bag inside-out and throwing it in the hole in that orientation works.

A portable hole is a circle of cloth spun from the webs of a phase spider interwoven with strands of ether and beams of starlight. When opened fully, a portable hole is 6 feet in diameter, but it can be folded up to be as small as a pocket handkerchief. When spread upon any surface, it causes an extradimensional space 10 feet deep to come into being. This hole can be picked up from inside or out by simply taking hold of the edges of the cloth and folding it up. Either way, the entrance disappears, but anything inside the hole remains.
