| #1QuidmanSep 11, 2014 4:49:19 | Hi there!
So, for a PbF game, I've created an interesting character : a former slaver trader from thay, wich get into some conflict with the Red Mage, and had to flee. During his travel, some event change my first ambition for this character to a new one which is more interesting, but more hard to create (and really need some min/maxing).
1st point, he discovered the story of Thay, and decide to get rid of the red mage, to reach the first and real ideology of the revolution who created Thay (aka, get rid of the theocrat, and instruct people to a better civilisation).
2nd point (most funny and interesting part), during his first adventure, he discovered little by little that other civilisation except Thay aren't that barbarian. And also that slavery isn't really a good option (in his opinion, he always though that slavery was a good way to civilise barbarian, aka everyone who isn't a good native Thayen).
What I want to do : A good leader who can stay and fight (with spell or melee weapon) in the heat of battle and buff his companion (and followers). Specially, he should be able to stand, fight, and help to fight against spellcaster (the red mage).
Since PBF roleplay have a quite slow leveling, this build should works at every level (until 12 or something like that).
here is my character :
Human : bard 2/ warrior 1
STR 14 DEX 16 CON 14 INT 16 WIS 8 CHA 14
Force of personality Combat Reflex Melodic casting Expert Tactician
(I may could change one of the feat)
Tumble (5), spellcraft (4), Bluff (5), concentration (5), Diplomacy (5), Balance (2), Appraise (4), Intimidate (6), Profession (Slave trader) 4, listen (1), sense motive (5), Gather Information (5), Perform (speach) (5).
It's an high roleplay context (which explain the 16 in INT), with few battle (but most of the times, hard ones). And the group change a lot (even during quest) because, it's PBF. Most of the time, I find a way to take the leadership of the group.
Concerning equipment : no need because it hardly depend on what the DM put on the quest. But, if there is an absolutly must have bonus (exept improve cha/str). You could tell me.
(Yeah, that sucks for what I want to do now, but at first, I wanted to do a bardic warrior specialise onto reach weapon)
Allowed book on our forum (we play in 3.5). Only CDP, feats and spell. We play with the basic classes and prestige class.
Thanks for your help!

Are these 3rd party or 3.0 books? Because I've never heard of them.
That said, the concept you're looking for is called a 'Gish,' or Arcane Warrior. When it comes to bards, there are a few options, one even in Frostburn: a feat called Snowflake Wardance. I'll try making a build tomorrow, it's late where I'm at and I have work early in the morning. |
| #3Andarious-RosethornSep 11, 2014 19:52:33 | I'm going to guess this was a foreign language title. Complete Warrior, Complete Arcane, Spell Compendium... Dungeon Masters Guide? French. |
| #4Tempest_StormwindSep 11, 2014 20:46:55 | Captain Charisma in my signature (Andarious' build, actually) is a bard build that fits all of those critiera; simply ignore the substitution at level 14 (since you don't have Eberron material) and it will work just fine.
Alternatively, if you want to play around with more variants, the A-Game Paladin in my signature fits the same idea, except with a touch of the holy about it. (It also uses an Eberron feat but can work fine without it.) It's more warrior and less caster, but every bit a leader; the bigger difference will be alignment. |
| #5Andarious-RosethornSep 11, 2014 21:06:06 | Not my build but I'd love to take the credit, it was RT. So many fantastic options for Bard build. It's become quite possibly my favorite class to optimize. It can do Buffer, Controller, Striker,or Jack of All Trades. So versatile, with or without multiclassing, feats alone can do most of the heavy lifting. |
| #6QuidmanSep 12, 2014 12:02:42 | Oops, yes sorry, I'm french and I forgot to translate some of the books. Sorry.
Thanks for the build, but sadly, it's largely based on Tome of Battle, which isn't allowed. Though, the selection of spell is really interesting, so I took some notes. Since my first post, I try two kind of "basic" build, one mostly about song, and the other with more spell casting, both on the orientation to buff and fight.
so basicaly :
1) Singer (Need to exange 2 feats) :
Negociator skill focus (perform) Melodic casting Combat reflexe
Level1 Bard Level2 Bard Level3 warrior Level 4 : Bard, inspire competence (+1 spellcaster) Level 5 : Bard (+1sp) Level 6 : Bard, ? (+1sp) Level 7 : Bard, suggestion, (+1sp) Level 8 : Heartfire Fanner (Dragon mag), inspired fight (1feats) (+1sp) Level 9 : Heartfire Fanner, Dragonsong, magic flare (1), inspire courage (+2), (+1sp) Level 10 : Heartfire Fanner, Bolster courage, inspire greatness, (+1sp) Level 11 : Dragonsong Lyrist, song of strengh Level 12 : Dragonsong Lyrist, ?, song of compulsion, (+1sp)
Spellcaster level : 10 (3/3/3/2/0) BBA : +9/+3 11 Bardic music PV 11d6+1d10 Skills points since level 4 : 7*6+2*4 + 4*9 = 86 needed : 63
So basically it's a great buffer, with good spells, but lack on PV and BBA. And i could have let down that level of fighter (but it's too late, and allow me to have better weapon). Interesting on the RP side too, because it means that my character had to find a way to recruit NPC as followers (or maybe even PJ), and so had to go closer to other people for that (or may be turn back to slavery, it's also an option).
2) Gish
Force of personality Combat Reflex Melodic casting Combat casting
Level 1 : Bard Level 2 : Bard Level 3 : Warrior Level 4 : Bard, inspire competence (+1 spellcaster) Level 5 : Warrior, expert Tactician (easier to get an agreement if I change feats) Level 6 : Bard, Chaos music (suggestion) , (+1sp) Level 7 : Lyric Thaumaturge, Bonus spell, (+1sp) Level 8 : Lyric Thaumaturge, captivating melody, (Inspire courage+2), (+1sp) Level 9 : Lyric Thaumaturge, ?,Spell secret, (+1sp) Level 10 : Abjurant champion, abjurant armor, extended Abjuration (+1sp) Level 11 : Abjurant champion, swift abjuration (+1sp) Level 12 : Abjurant champion, ? (+1sp)
7 bardic music Spellcaster level : 10 (3/4/4/2/0) BBA : +10/+5 PV : 7d6+5d10 Skills points since level 4 : 2*6+ 3*4 + 4*2 + 4*9 = 68 needed : 63 Less bardic music (and less interesting ones) but better spells, better BBA (and Far more better later). What is sad is that I don't get inspire greatness. I get just the right number of skills, but... need to find a way to keep « perform » as a class skill. On the Rp side, I like the Idea of abjurant champion against Red Mage.
For the feats, there are some which looks interesting to me : Sound of silence, Doomspeak, Haunting Melody, Versatile spellcaster, supremely confident (perform check in place of intimidate check), Imperious command, Lingering song, Understone of Heresy+Blasphemous Utterance, combat intuition, Leadership, closer cohort. But there is certainly more of them. |
| #7QuidmanSep 24, 2014 15:41:32 | Hi there, sorry for double posting, just to bumping this thread a little.
So what do you think on both build (I'm really bad on min/maxing when I try, so I can already guess there are things to change)?
Concerning the spell. I have to admit that I barely can chose, except the spell which buff song, I can't find things to combo with... And also about feat, better to go on reserve feat, song feat, ability feat, or fighting feat ? I guess it depend on what I wan't to do... but i'm quite lost on wich way is a better option (once again, the idea is to have a character who buff guy's and himself, and is able to stand (either way by spell or fight) against Red Wizard and other encounter they can trhow to him).
