Ok, let me start by saying this: Screw the entire debate behind it. Let's assume that, for the purposes of this thread, a Dragonwrought Kobold is considered a True Dragon.

Now that this is out of the way, let's open up the MM5 to page 43. We all know DWKs can become Dracoliches as early as level 1. But what about the Xorvintaal template?

The abilities a Dragon has change completely when you apply the template to become more reactive during combat. Because of this, you have a great way to defend yourself against the attacks your opponents launch.

The problem? No listed LA. Normally, this means you can't play one. Let's skip that part. This very debate occurs when you use the Spellstitched template on a Necropolitan. This isn't the important part.

What is important? The benefits of the template, and the Dragonfire Adept class.

The key is not to make yourself a Xorvintaal Dragon, but to have one as a master!

And the easiest masters to please? Kobolds (save for Pun-Pun).

Looking at the benefits that the master receives, the payoff for making a Dragonwrought into one is huge. So, let's find out what the optimal way to use the two templates is.

Benefits of the Xorvintaal Dragon Template

  • Telepathy out to 10 miles with all Exarchs. Even further with willing XDs.
  • Immunity to Divination effects when it concerns your actions in the Great Game.
  • Saving Throw Bonuses.
  • Two potent SLAs, one of which is at will.
  • Create Exarch (key benefit!).
  • Alternate Form (any humanoid or animal, up to Medium size).
  • Berserker Power (not a big deal).
  • Deep Breath (HUGE!)
  • Dragonic Roar (effectively a free Empower Breath effect).
  • Dragon Eyes (nice tactical benefits here).
  • Dragon Toxin (XD Dragonwrought Kobold Totemists just became a juggernaught!).
  • Energy Aura (nice).
  • Intimidating Presence (LoL).
  • Recall Exarch (THIS IS THE STUFF WE WANT!).
  • Rejuvination (now, if only there were a LA on the template...).
  • Twist of Fate (key to even more BC for the DFA).

With all of these massive benefits, you now have the Big Bad Kobold Ally on your side.

What's more, your DM will love it! You just gave him the biggest plot generator since Clerics started worshiping gods (about the time Complete Divine was printed).

But what about us? How's about having the party's tank get the X Exarch template? Or what about using the LA Buyback to get the template on every single party member, and thus have the most effective party strategy ever?

Exarch Template's Benefits

  • Energy Immunity (Because your master can change it at will, you now have the awesome for immunity, bonus points if the master has the Fivefold or Discorporating [immunity to Disintegrate? Sure, why the hell not?] Breath effects).
  • Frightful Presence (meh).
  • Dragon Wings (hiyo!).
  • Dragonic Reverie (not bad).
  • Lair's Return (woot!).
  • Lair's Rebirth (OMFPWNZ00RS!)

So, let's optimize this Bag of Holding BS. Remember that the DM will love you for giving him effectively unlimited plot hooks and a way to rescue the party whenever he wants (without using DM Fiat).

Although I do not have this book, I will now get it to inspect this craziness of yours. I love kobalds, so anything I can do to give the ma boost is a +.

Good job! (I think)

MM5, Dragon Magic, Draconomicon, Dragons of Eberron, Races of the Dragon, and a few others are the books commonly referenced when dealing with Kobolds.
