| #1EndarireJun 22, 2009 12:43:38 | Jokingly, I say Gary Gygax died and possessed my future DM. She told us out of character that after we 'complete' the Red Hand of Doom module, she intends to put us in a fight that will kill our Red Hand of Doom characters. Lucky for us, I have about 10 years' experience with manipulating the RAW to my whim while she has only a faint grasp of the rules. She told us out of character she intends to put us against a Solar after dragging us through puzzle rooms. We'll probably face minions with the Solar as well. By the way, the group's currently ECL9-10 while a Solar if properly played is about CR23. Despite the massive disparity, I will rise to the challenge. At present, she is dead-set on doing this, and I wish to win by the rules. I realize there is tension between players, but I'll not go gently into that good night. OOC issues aside, I still wish for us to come out alive after trouncing the challenge with our party who has already started. Advice for overcoming this challenge is the point of this thread! Fleeing is a possibility, but that would kill the point. House Rules & Setting Details We're set in Faerun. All WotC material including Dragon Magazine is allowed, pending DM approval. -Fractional BAB stacking is on. -We use autokills. A natural 20 on an accuracy roll, then a natural 20, then confirming will automatically kill the sucka, even if it's a PC. -No wraithstrike or celerity. |
| #2siranuiJun 22, 2009 13:19:02 | You might want to start by telling your GM to keep their mouth shut about future plans, because it kinda spoils the fun. Unless they were drunk of course... in which case it's their fault ![]() |
| #3dbayJun 22, 2009 14:49:53 | does the instant kill work even if you would normally do no damage due to DR or something? I wonder if it might work if you make some sort of insane-billion-attacks-with-luck-rerolls build. I think there's a spell somewhere (streamers, maybe? it's from a campaign setting. dont remember which. might be forgotten realms.) that, when metamagic'd right makes people take a tonne of damage whenever they take an action. If you could beat the Solar's SR, you could kill it in a few turns. |
| #4Treantmonklvl20Jun 22, 2009 15:23:34 | It seems 9th level spell staves with reduced charges are fair game so as long as your willing to blow some charged items - it should be fairly easy with 3 spells. Pre-battle: If you have any warning of the battle - Nerveskitter will help you win initiative. Round 1: Time stop (Staff with 1 charge) and move beside Solar Round 2: Prismatic Sphere (Staff with 1 charge) around the two of you Round 3: Maw of Chaos (Staff with 1 charge) in the sphere and leave the sphere Round 4: Pop some popcorn and wait for Time Stop to end Round 5: Celebrate victory Would this not work? |
| #5suzerainJun 22, 2009 18:21:04 | A Prismatic sphere spell cast to materialize in a space occupied by a creature is disrupted, and the spell is wasted. Could be interpreted to not let anyone else be in the sphere at the time of casting. Considering the fact that the OP is essentially playing a Beholder Mage with Incantatrix stacked on top, I'd assume your combo is very much non-troubling, though. |
| #6magicdealerJun 22, 2009 19:27:15 | Couple funny things here :D First, you could mess with your dm by, when you see the solar, having your whole party start begging for forgiveness, and for the chance to change and do good. Then, when the solar is offguard, take your surprise round and beat the crap out of it ![]() The solar's damage reduction can be bypassed by spells with the *evil* descriptor. That leaves the regeneration and the high ac. However, the solar only has an ac of 14 against touch attacks. With a +9 to initiative, the solar has a very good chance of wishing something bad to happen. The problem is that you have only one round - two at the most - to get the job down. The at will greater dispel, full cleric spellcasting, and other at will abilities are going to be rough. Consider having your hood friend take a level in sorcerer for true strike. You should be able to afford some power attacking then, if you have it. Alternatively, there's a feat that allows you to take the penalty from power attacking to your armor class instead of your attack roll. That might be worthwhile, since of the Solar attacks you, the Solar WILL hit you :D The Xiaphen character needs a decanter of endless cursed water. that's 2d4 damage per pint of water to good aligned outsiders. Which an angel just happens to be. On full blast that's 8 pints to the gallon, 30 gallons, is 240 pints, which totals out to 480d4 damage per round, or a minimum of 480 damage and a maximum of 1960 damage. Need you roll? I think not. The decanter of endless water costs 9000 gold. The unholy water is a 1st level spell, and could be cast by a first level cleric. According to the magic item creation rules, you would add 2000g to the cost. 11000g for a decanter of win. :D And yes, your healbot. Here's another *very cheap* chance for you to win. Have all of your characters change alignment through the Atonement spell to any good. The solar should *not* attack you then and you can defeat it with words *and still get the xp*. If your dm ignores this and has the solar attack anyways, merely have your cleric utter *pazuzu, pazuzu, pazuzu*, and have him destroy the solar for you. All in all, I really like the decanter of unholy water. Ever seen an angel melt? |
| #7EndarireJun 22, 2009 22:00:34 | The DM is new and this is the campaign ender, but I'll not go gently into that good night. Ebony is a Wiz1 and can cast true strike, but the standard action cast is a bummer, especially considering initiating a charge from Battle Jump is a full round action. Regarding the decanter, that's brilliant! Couple that with the pseudo-forcecage and equip him with water breathing and we're clear! That's definitely more stylish than blowing 50K+ on a grand scheme. Despite maw of chaos not dealing lethal damage, a Solar would easily go down in a round with 168d6 damage since the odds against it are about 1 in 7 x 10^-100 that all the dice roll 1 or 2. When it goes down, coup de grace it! Regen 15 means nothing when it takes 500 damage per round. Regarding prismatic sphere, even if I cast the sphere around the Solar, it can still wish or plane shift out, lest it takes so much damage in a round it's effectively killed and it stops flying, drops onto the violet section, and is spirited away to the Elemental Plane of Snakes. |
| #8blightersbaneJun 22, 2009 22:29:05 | we did your DM's idea (only it was vs. a devil) if done right its a blast and one hellofa fight. One of the best fights you can have is a party of 10's +/- fighting a CR 20 +/-what I did for a campiagn is face the party against a Pit Fiend but had his spell casting crippled & was suffering from a combat the players noticed thru a force wall over entry to large cavern. The players witnessed the pit Fiend downing and killing the last of a small group of Paladins. When Paly dies force wall goes down...ding ding ding! it was 1 of the only fights we had that went more than 10 melee rounds and everyone was worked, sundered staff, and sundered greatsword, 1/2 or less hit pionts all around, a couple in the negatives. GREAT FIGHT! goodtimes BB |
| #9sofawallJun 23, 2009 0:14:50 | The solar's damage reduction can be bypassed by spells. That leaves the regeneration and the high ac. However, the solar only has an ac of 14 against touch attacks. Fix'd. |
| #10Treantmonklvl20Jun 23, 2009 6:36:14 | The DM is new and this is the campaign ender, but I'll not go gently into that good night. True - I guess you could dimensional anchor him |
| #11lormadorJun 23, 2009 11:41:20 | It's easier than all that. Win initiative (not hard), then from scroll (Time Stop + hand decanter of endless unholy water to flying friend + Forcecage + Shapechange (Beholder)). The Solar is now held in a Forcecage and bathed in Antimagic. It isn't going to use any abilities to escape, because it can't use anything but extraordinary abilities. And those don't cut it. Your minion flies over the Forcecage and turns on the Decanter of Unholy Water. Some drips down on the Solar. Eventually, it dies, since damage from the unholy water is evil damage. I don't recommend engaging the DM in this sort of game. It won't end well- but you will win the battle. Not the war, though, I'm afraid. |
| #12coraniaJun 23, 2009 11:56:08 | I think the solar's DR is epic and evil... so unless that is epic unholy water, it isn't going to do much. |
| #13wings_of_peaceJun 23, 2009 12:28:16 | Couple funny things here :D Shouldn't the Solar's damage reduction be vulnerable to all spells? I was under the impression that spells as a whole bypassed DR though this might be an oversight and I'm missing something. |
| #14pyro_azerJun 23, 2009 13:13:47 | Shouldn't the Solar's damage reduction be vulnerable to all spells? I was under the impression that spells as a whole bypassed DR though this might be an oversight and I'm missing something. They do. |
| #15sofawallJun 23, 2009 15:56:21 | I think I mentioned that. |
| #16EndarireJun 29, 2009 16:53:27 | From my understanding, unholy water bypasses DR since it's a special case. |
