Best Cherry Pick Spells for a wizard

Hey there. I've been working over this for a while now, and not coming up with much conclusive. There are various prestige classes (Recaster, Wyrm Wizard, FiendBlooded, unseen seer etc) that allow a caster to take spells known not normally on their list (as also does the feat Extra Spell by some interpretations, though that's a heavily debated subject.)

Anyways, I've got a focused specialist conjurer Malconvoker, and I'm taking two levels of Wyrm Wizard (ending at level 22, with a total spells known level of twenty) and wondering what some of the best spells to consider are.

In my personal case, I have ready access to clerical magic via greater planar binds, and a Fochlucan Lyrist (bard+druid) cohort, so the best choices would be domain spells and spells from the smaller lists, ranger, Paladin, etc.

Feel free to throw out the better cleric and druid spells for a Wizard to 'copy' off their sheets though, if this turns out big enough I'll see if I can take the information and turn it into a guide or handbook of sorts. (probably by making another thread to do so and build in that if this ever got so much momentum.)

I've been looking at the same thing myself recently, playing a recaster character in two separate games. I think one of the best choices would have to be Favour of the Matyr. This makes you immune to the side effects of the various celerity spells, allowing you to spam a whole lot of spells all in one go without being dazed.

There are probably better spells from higher levels, but I went recaster early on so I've only looked through options 5th and below.

Hope that helps...

Yeah, its a good choice. I've got daze immunity from a template, but there's a ton of other good things in Favored of the Martyr (Paladin spell, not sure the book) I'll go ahead and throw in a cleric one that's come to my mind.

Surge of Fortune (complete champion, spell level 5), grants a +2 luck bonus on just about everything, attacks, saves, you name it, and at one point during it's duration you can opt to end the effect by 'taking twenty' on any of the above rolls (including an auto-critical threat with weaponlike spells)

Purely out of curiosity: what template did you use to get daze immunity?

Specifically it was a modified version of the firesouled creature from Dragon 314 that I worked out with the DM. I'll put down the normal benefits and LA, followed by my version.

Fire subtype
Overwelming Passion: (charisma saving throw effect to remove access to one charisma based ability, including access to a single cha based spell known, the firesouled creature has to choose an ability it's seen used by it's target, usable HD/2 times per day.)
+4 cha
Inspiring: Basically the bardic Inspire Courage ability of a first level bard
Leadership feat
Immunity to daze and stunning
Haste SLA 1x per day
LA+3

For mine, it took away the Overwelming Passion, the Inspiring, limited the leadership feat to a member of the heartfire fanners organization (an organization that virtually worships firesouled creatures) as a cohort and no followers, and said cohort had further restrictions in what classes it could take. (Hence the fochlucan lyrist, it had to have a good amount of musical ability)

Also, the stun immunity was taken off, and the daze immunity was changed to 1d6 nonlethal damage per round I would have been dazed.

cha bonus, haste, and subtype also kept.

LA reduced to +1 and we're using buyoff

(Yeah, not something most people could take lol, though I'd hope other GM's would be kind enough to allow it, that cha's helped my bindings quite a bit as a malconvoker.)

Anyways, if somebody else is looking to get immunity to daze for cheap, Necropolitan can get it done for LA+0, but you'd need to get some other way of gaining HP in place of con past your DM lol. (Faerie Mysteries feat could do it, every day you would choose to use your intelligence modifier for HP)

269 views and only 4 replies (half of those replies from the author) for a thread seeking to compile useful information and perhaps turn it into a resource. Not cool lol.

And on to other notes, I was looking at Races of Destiny, and noticed that both Choose Destiny (9th level, destiny domain, allows you to roll twice and take the best result) and Delay Death (3rd level, from the same book) could be very useful choices. (Note Choose Destiny can be acquired through Spontaneous Divination if your gaming group doesn't use the Erratta)

Being Undead doesn't grant immunity to daze, so Necropolitan wouldn’t work. There is that Eberron Dragonmark feat though...

Anyway, as far as spells go:

Heal (from Adept for 5th level)
Miracle
Divine Power
Wings of Cover
Wings of Flurry
Arcane Fusion
Greater Arcane Fusion

Usefulness depends on the level you can get them. (And on what you want to do with your Wizard.)

*facepalm* My bad, I'm not sure where I got the idea, but I was sure Undead were immune to daze.

Yeah, just checked the MM, live and learn lol.

Anyways, yeah, those are good calls (Not completely certain the benefit of Miracle when wish is an option, maybe because Miracle doesn't have the 'blow up in your face' risk?

Good choices there, infact I'm leaning on picking up Greater Arcane fusion myself.

A little surprised this thread never got much momentum, but oh well, what can you really expect from your first real attempt at creating a resource lol.

Thanks for the help Farodin and Weezel.

Miracle is also great because some of its functions don't cost a huge amount of experience. (Duplicating other spells.)

I blame 4th edition…

Also, IIRC a list of good spells to add to a sorc/wizard list has already been made once. I can’t find the thread anymore however. Probably deleted.

Triadspell is a great 5th level Cleric spell from the SpC. Each casting triples the amount of spells stored in a single spell slot of up to 3rd level. If you have enough time to prepare, you can have TONS of utility spells prepared with great versatility.
