Best fighter feat for a sorcerer?

So, I'm trying to help a player make a decent character. This is an E6 Eberron campaign with most players playing goblinoids and orcs (the main villains will be aberrations).

I have changed some of the races to make them more in line with the power level of PC races. The new Hobgoblins are the same as the old ones, with the following adjustments:

* No stat mods
* Toughness as a bonus feat at 1st level
* Bonus Fighter feat at 1st level (can also be used to buy a martial weapon, light armor, or shield proficiency feat)

One player is playing a hobgoblin sorcerer and wants to know where best to put his bonus feat. My current advice is to buy shield proficiency and eventually get himself a mithril buckler (which could be enchanted).

Any other ideas?

Improved Toughness.

Great idea, but he's a sorcerer -- won't meet the +2 base Fort save requirement.

As for Imp Init, that is a good choice too, and one the player considered.

Any other ideas?

+1 Imp Init

Imp Toughness would only ever be +6 hp in E6, and the whole point of a masterwork buckler is it has no ACP - so you don't need to be proficient with it.

Durrr... So there's really no reason why EVERY wizard shouldn't be carrying around a mithril buckler?

Well I guess Imp Init it is then...

I don't remember if the tentacle whip symbiot requires a feat, but that might be worth spending a feat on.

Improved Initiative. Second choice: Point Blank Shot if he's a ray specialist.

A Mithral Small Shield or Buckler doesn't require a proficiency (in theory it does - but if you're not proficient with it you get an armour check penalty of 0 to all your skills). Likewise a +1 Mithral Twilight Chain Shirt gives you a 0 armour check penalty and 0% Arcane Failure chance. (Why did Wizards have to make Twilight core?)
