So I'm currently playing a:
Human Pal 5/Pious Templar 4/Fist of Raziel 2
Str 18
Dex 10 (Gloves +2)
Con 15
Int 11
Wis 14
Cha 20 (Cloak +2)
in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Do to an anticipated high amount of dungeon crawling, I took the charging smite variant from PHBII. While I still don't regret taking the variant, our DM has a nasty habit of using flying creatures while outdoors, which, as you might expect, is terrible for a melee/defensive-based paladin with the "shaky" flaw from UA.
I had been planning on taking Leadership next level (mostly for flavor) anyway, but now I'm thinking that getting a flying mount/cohort would be the best way to go.
I'm basically looking for recommendations on types of mounts (giant eagle/owl, pegasus, etc...) and ways to optimize a mount using the leadership feat. Secondly, our party just lost our cleric, so I'm the primary healer (which is bad, considering the fact that I also took the holy warrior variant). As such, once my mount/cohort gets caught up with LA and HD, I'll probably make them a cleric healing battery. Lord Otaku's thread here was helpful, and I'm especially curious about a druid possibility, but a nightmare is obviously out of the question (despite their intense awesomeness...).
Any help would be much appreciated.

First of all, you're supposed to take a level of Divine Crusader before you start picking up Fist of Raziel levels. If you aren't allowed to squeeze that level back in there then you're going to lose another CL from it. Pious Templar casting just isn't worth a +CL class.

As for flying, Phantom Steed and Fly spells should be considered. Fly is good for now, and Phantom Steed needs to be cast at CL 14 before flying. If neither seems feasible, try to get a Pegasus mount. All that matters is the movement speed, really, and a Pegasus has a whopping 200' fly speed
