Best protection against mindstuff

Hi.

What is the best means to protect a character with super low will save at low levels, and by only using feats and magic items?

The CL of items cannot be higher than 8, and it cannot use higher than level 3 spells. Boosting will save directly seems kind of mew, since its so abyssmally low, that even a boost will only help so much.

Personally, I am thinking there must be an item of protection from (insert alignment) somewhere, but I am not sure where.

Any ideas or help?

Thanks

Well, if you can get one, a Ghostly Visage symbiote will grant you undead style immunity to mind effecting... that helps a lot. Dread Necromancers can get one at 7th level as a familiar, or in theory any evil level 2+ Cleric could rebuke one if they can find one.

There is, as published, no item of continual Protection from Evil (or any of its 3 sisters). Such an item could be crafted using the rules in the DM with a base market cost of 2k gold, although that would be rediculously under priced for the value of the item, even if it ONLY gave the +2 defection bonus and the +2 saves vs evil creatures, much less the protection from all active mind control commands.

Note, Prot Evil does not protect vs Confusion, which is just as likely to screw with a level 8 creature, if not more, than a Dominate. Beware of 2 nearby allies getting hit with Confusion when one of them roles "attack nearest". One of them will probably die.

I've seen it happen. :D I had a grappler with a high will save in a party with a guy who had a gigantic weapon with a crazy crit range and low will save. He could one-shot alot of the party easily if he critted. My job frequently was to grapple him if he failed a Will save. Once, I was too late. :P

Willing Deformity + Deformity (Madness) grants you immunity to all mental effects but comes with a heft price.

I am trying to play an ellegant assassin here

The Planar Ward soulmeld offers IMMUNITY to Enchantment (charm) and Enchantment (compulsion) effects that grant the caster continuing control over you (Magic Jar, Charm Person, Dominate Person, etc). It won't save you from Confusion or Final Rebuke, but it's quite useful, and can be had for either an Incarnate 1 dip or a Shape Soulmeld Feat.

Martial Study (Moment of Perfect Mind) or an item that grants the feat (3kgp, in ToB) would do it, and if you're a Swordsage (which is a great assassin class anyway) you can just take that manuever. It's not perfect but it can give you a really nice will save when you need it.

here are some items... that may help:

Armor enhancement : Mindarmor: This kind of armor or shield grants the wearer a +3 insight bonus on Will saving throws to resist all mind-affecting and/or compulsion powers.
Faint psychokinesis; ML 5th; Craft Psionic Arms and Armor, empty mind; Price +24,000 gp.

Crystal Mask of Mindarmor: A crystal mask of mindarmor grants the wearer a +4 insight bonus on all Will saving throws.
Faint telepathy; ML 5th; Craft Universal Item, conceal thoughts; Price 10,667 gp; Weight 1/2 lb.

Third Eye of Conceal: While worn, a third eye conceal protects the wearer from view by all devices, powers, and spells that detect, inf luence, or read emotions or thoughts. This power protects against all mind-affecting powers and effects as well as information-gathering by clairsentience powers or effects (except for metafaculty); this item affects the wearer as if he enjoyed the benefit of the psionic mind blank power.
Strong telepathy; ML 15th; Craft Universal Item, psionic mind blank; Price 120,000 gp.

Rod of Absorption: This rod acts as a magnet, drawing spells or spell-like abilities into itself. The magic absorbed must be a single-target spell or a ray directed at either the character possessing the rod or her gear. The rod then nullifies the spell’s effect and stores its potential until the wielder releases this energy in the form of spells of her own. She can instantly detect a spell’s level as the rod absorbs that spell’s energy. Absorption requires no action on the part of the user if the rod is in hand at the time.
A running total of absorbed (and used) spell levels should be kept. The wielder of the rod can use captured spell energy to cast any spell she has prepared, without expending the preparation itself. The only restrictions are that the levels of spell energy stored in the rod must be equal to or greater than the level of the spell the wielder wants to cast, that any material components required for the spell be present, and that the rod be in hand when casting. For casters such as bards or sorcerers who do not prepare spells, the rod’s energy can be used to cast any spell of the appropriate level or levels that they know.
A rod of absorption absorbs a maximum of fifty spell levels and can thereafter only discharge any remaining potential it might have. The rod cannot be recharged. The wielder knows the rod’s remaining absorbing potential and current amount of stored energy.
To determine the absorption potential remaining in a newly found rod, roll d% and divide the result by 2. Then roll d% again: On a result of 71–100, half the levels already absorbed by the rod are still stored within.
Strong abjuration; CL 15th;Craft Rod, spell turning; Price 50,000 gp.

for an 8th lvl Character ... Crystal Mask of Mindarmor 10667gp seems best.... add to this the Location(Otyguh Hole(Complete Scoundrel).. gain Feat: Iron Will(+2 Will saves) 3000gp value.... you get +6 to all Will Saves for 13667gp

:D

Thanks, I had forgotten that mask (and I had no idea about the hole).

+6 would take my save up to a more descent +7, vs my highest which is fortitude +12.

I found a neat feat in Sandstorm callled Scorpions Resolve. It grants +4 to will saves vs spells and abilities.

That leads me to another question: What will save is not a spell or ability?

With no requirements, and no bonus type it seems like a very nice version of Iron will...

Dragons Frightful Presence (Ex).... some Fear Effects,etc...
but Scorpions Resolve is an excellent feat to also take..... since it stacks...

for a Fighter type.... with a good Con score...try this also:

Steadfast Determination[General] (PH2 p83)req:Endurance
1. Use your Constitution modifier in place of your Wisdom modifier on Will saves.
2. You do not automatically fail Fortitude saves on a roll of ‘natural 1’.

so if your Character did this:

10667gp Crystal Mask of Mindarmor (+4 Insight to Will saves)
3000gp Otyguh Hole(Complete Scoundrel).. gain Feat: Iron Will(+2 Will saves)

take the feats:
Endurance
Steadfast Determination
Scorpions Resolve

outcome:

+10 Will saves Based on Con(vs Spells and Spl-like abilities), +6 Will saves Based on Con for all other Will saves

Pretty much everything is an "ability". It doesn't say Spell-like ability, right, just "abilities"?

yepp, which is why it screams awesome, and why I have no idea why I have not seen it before I sweeped across the books this time

As for the other stuff, my con score is 10, so that doesn't work (an awesome feat though, no doubt).

I guess an Otuyg hole (if my GM will ever let it fly that I "buy" a location :P ), crystal mask and scorpions resolve. A pretty big investment in will defence, but this character is so nice in all other ways that I have to cover his enormous weakness somehow.

Bind Vestige and Improved Bind Vestige (or whatever the one that lets you bind higher level vestiges) for Dahlver-Nar will grant immunity to Wisdom damage, drain, Madness, Insanity, and Confusion effects. Should couple really well with Shape Soulmeld: Planar Ward... I can't think of a [Mind] effect that doesn't include one of that list. It takes 3 feats, though.

The cool thing about the Vestiges is that you can switch it daily, so if you need to do an assasination, for example, bind Focolor to give your victem a -2 to their saves before using Death Attack. You don't get as many benefits as a Binder w/ it, but it still has a pretty decent list.
