What are some of your favorite save-or-die spells vs undeads? I looked through the list of save-or-be-screwed spells at BG, and I swear all the good ones are Fort saves or Enchantments. Forcecage + Dimensional Lock is about all I got out of it. Oh, and Amber Sarcophagus from BoED. Holy Word is great too. So yeah, I got three potentially good ones, well, 2 really, coz Forcecage doesn't really mean much.

So, anyone with plenty of experience fighting undeads got a good list?

Command Undead. Control Undead. Hold Undead. Disintigrate. Ray of Enfeeblement (Empowered and Maximized, of course).

also:

Hide from Undead ..... 10 min/CL... Undead cannot see, hear, or smell the warded creatures. Even extraordinary or supernatural sensory capabilities, such as blindsense, blindsight, scent, and tremorsense, cannot detect or locate warded creatures. Nonintelligent undead creatures are automatically affected and act as though the warded creatures are not there. An intelligent undead creature gets a single Will saving throw... Will Negates

Undeath to Death .... The spell slays 1d4 HD worth of Undead per caster level (maximum 20d4). Will negates... remember, this is Hit Die.. not Hit points

Good thing Ray of Enfeeblement is just a Str penalty, then.

Would that really work? An undead isn't an "object", and they're also immune to fort save spells...

theyre only immune if the spell doesnt affect objects.

speaking of which, PAO works well on undead.

Ugh...

From the Monster Manual:

Undead Subtype: Not subject to critical hits, nonleathal damage, ability drain or energy drain.

If that wasn't enough for you, check out the next sentence.

Immune to damage to it's physical ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution)....

a penalty is neither ability damage nor ability drain. it is a different thing entirely and nowhere does it say undead are immune to it.

A quick check through the SRD and i couldn't find what happens if a penalty tries to set a score below 1 (or 3 for int I'm assuming). This does seem to be a near hairsplitting categorization.

Also keep the anti-undead stuff comin I was thinking about making a Deathless character recently... Everything that specifically affects undead may also effect a change in a deathless right?

um... CoC? and a quick check through the SRD and i couldn't find what happens if a penalty tries to set a score below 1 (or 3 for int I'm assuming). Aside from the 'tool' language this does seem to be a near hairsplitting categorization.

ray of enfeeblement will not let the score go below 1, but other penalties (like entangled) will drop the score to 0 if possible. most of the good things that apply penalties to ability scores though (like exhaustion), undead are immune to.

Ray of Enfeeblement is specifically mentioned as affecting undead in the FAQ.

Rock on!

Keep them coming if you guys have any more. I was so excited when I first read Undeath to Death, but the max HD is 7HD for one creature

I'm trying to figure out whether it's better to go Clr or Wiz (or maybe there's a better class?) for a character that specializes in basically in save-or-die spells. I figure it'd be easy to boost the DC up really high as a Master Specialist wizard, especially if combined with Fatespinner, which is why I'm asking for spells. I want to make sure I choose a school that can affect all creatures basically. Cleric is also great because they get DC boosts like crazy from things like Prayer Beads.

Undeath to Death does not have max HD for one creature = 7HD... notice:

Undeath to Death
Necromancy
Level: Clr 6, Sor/Wiz 6
Components: V, S, M/DF
Area: Several undead creatures within a 40-ft.-radius burst
Saving Throw: Will negates
This spell functions like circle of death, except that it destroys undead creatures as noted above.
Material Component: The powder of a crushed diamond worth at least 500 gp.

Circle of Death
Necromancy [Death]
Level: Sor/Wiz 6
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Area: Several living creatures within a 40-ft.-radius burst
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
A circle of death snuffs out the life force of living creatures, killing them instantly.
The spell slays 1d4 HD worth of living creatures per caster level (maximum 20d4). Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first; among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the burst’s point of origin are affected first. No creature of 9 or more HD can be affected, and Hit Dice that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted.
Material Component: The powder of a crushed black pearl with a minimum value of 500 gp.

max HD for a single creature is 9HD.... the nice thing is that whe you can cast it as an 11th lv Wiz... you will probably will have your Caster level boosted to 15th so it should affect 15d4 HD = 37 HD of Undead or 4 Undead with 9 HD must save or be destroyed or 3 Undead with 12 HD ...etc...

very handy to quickly take out large groups of undead

The best save or die spells against undead i find to be Slow and Glitterdust, neither is mind affecting so the undead are not immune and they both target will which most undead dont have as a good save.

will is the ONLY good save undead have...

fort saves are always the worst due to the fact that they have no CON score, but you can only use object-affecting spells on them.

undeath to death is probably not worth it by the time you can cast it. however, if you are a dread necro, i would recommend at least carrying around the material component, just in case. if youre a sorc, wiz, or cleric though, dont waste your time with it, you have better options.
