| #2reisApr 09, 2009 6:23:08 | drop evocation necromancy and enchantment |
| #3Treantmonklvl20Apr 09, 2009 6:42:29 | I would refer you HERE. |
| #4SIKBUZApr 09, 2009 6:54:38 | Ahh.. The guide to gods.. I'm slowly going through this but was hoping some-one who has played an Initiate could give some insight.. Thank you though Treant |
| #5pithicaApr 09, 2009 9:11:20 | You should definitely go MS 7 for the Evasion/Mettle ability. That's a drastic improvement in overall survivability. I would drop Enchant and Evocation first and formost. They're the easiest to replace with other schools. If you go focused specialist (I wouldn't recommend this with Abjurer, really) or Incantatrix (I would, however, recommend this) and have to drop a third, it would be either Ill or Nec, depending on which of the two flavors I preferred for that character, but probably Nec, unless it was an undead heavy campaign. Best abjuration spells/level, for me, would be... 1st-Protection from X (one of the best defensive 1sts, period) 2nd-Arcane Turmoil (Targeted Dispel Magic+ as a 2nd) 3rd-Anticipate Teleportation (though I like this less if you're starting high enough to have greaters at 6th) 4th-Dispelling Screen (I've screwed enemy casters over with this a number of times) 5th-Spell Theft (best debuff in the game, best self-buff if your DM is the type to throw DMM-persist clerics at you) 6th-Greater Anticipate Teleportation (mmm...chpwnage) 7th-Energy Immunity (persisted immunity to energy types, extend with rods or auto-extend from AbC for even more fun) 8th-Mindblank (I'm oldschool) 9th-Maw of Chaos (who says you need Evo to blast) See also...http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=990722 Oh, wait, that's what TM already linked to...well, maybe that'll save you a click. |
| #6keithioApr 09, 2009 9:46:46 | I hate dropping schools, try and pull domain wizard hax and be a Wizard5/Incantatrix4/IotSV7/Archmage4 |
| #7reisApr 09, 2009 10:49:55 | yea if you're going abjuration specialist mastery of counterspelling is pretty cool |
| #8dr_rocktopusApr 09, 2009 11:03:41 | I seem to remember a req on Incantatrix RE: which schools you must not have dropped. |
| #9keithioApr 09, 2009 11:08:19 | Incantatrix requires you to drop an additional school and does not allow you to have abjuration as a dropped school. |
| #10cloerApr 09, 2009 11:17:59 | A fellow initiate fan! abjuror3/MS2/incantrix3/MS1/IotSFV7/MS or Archmage 4 (is a very efficient buid) but i would go: Conjuror 5/Incantrix 4/IotSFV 7/Archmage 4 Its very feat hungry build but if your DM lets you get flaws and you are human or stronheart halfling you can get: -Abrupt jaunt (instead of your familiar) -A domain or spontainous divination (instead of your 5 level feat) -A extra spell slot from one of the best schools instead of beeing stuck whit abjuraton What are you planning to do whit your feats??? XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX is the Evasion/Mettle ability really that good???, i considered it but found it redundant whit my shields and all, but the again i dont really like MS. |
| #11reisApr 09, 2009 12:20:54 | it depends what you want to do with your wizard. If you want to blow things up and do hardcore battlefield control, conjuration is your best bet. If you want to shut down enemy spellcasters to the point where they are almost useless and still have access to lots of great utility, buffing, and damage spells, go abjurer. |
| #12cloerApr 09, 2009 12:24:49 | from what ive read counterspelling isn't that efficient |
| #13keithioApr 09, 2009 12:36:17 | from what ive read counterspelling isn't that efficient From what I've played it is ![]() |
| #14cloerApr 09, 2009 12:39:00 | can you explain, because every guide i have read says to avoid it, |
| #15dr_rocktopusApr 09, 2009 12:41:08 | I tend to prefer counter-casting over counterspelling, actually. Um. The gist is that there are fundamentally two ways to go about it, and that they differ pretty considerably. Unoptimized counter-spelling is fairly useless, but if you can reliably catch the initiative, a little countering can go a really long ways. I have a guide to what I mean by counter casting, let me dig it up.... here. |
| #16pithicaApr 09, 2009 12:44:24 | is the Evasion/Mettle ability really that good???, i considered it but found it redundant whit my shields and all, but the again i dont really like MS. It probably is redundant, 95% of the time. Most prc's and abilities are once you get 9th level spells. It is however an (Ex), though, which means you get to keep it when the (Su)'s would fail. It's also still there when your out of your wards for the day, and when your out of counterspells. That's probably not going to come up all that often, and it may never come up if your DM doesn't push his players that far, but it may come up every game if your DM does. Hell, I'd probably take the Planar Touchstone-Catalogues of Enlightenment feat just to get the domain power from Pride (re-roll ones on saves), just to make me even that much harder to kill. If you're plan is to play the 'unkillable' wizard, you might as well go for broke. |
| #17keithioApr 09, 2009 13:23:10 | can you explain, because every guide i have read says to avoid it, I recommend in investing in the inquisition domain power (Through planar touchstone or ACF granted domain power) and the arcane mastery feat (Which is good for SR also), and preparing at least 1 battlemagic perception (From heroes of battle) and spellcaster's bane at all times. Mmmm, free action 100% success rate counterspelling. |
| #18dr_rocktopusApr 09, 2009 13:23:55 | True. Story. Which planar touchstone grants it, by the way? I think a short list of good planar touchstones is going in my war weaver handbook at this rate. Crucially, you can also counter-cast alongside this, for maximum devastation. It's pretty simple after thirteenth level to insure that if you win initiative, the other mage dies. |
| #19keithioApr 09, 2009 13:34:33 | Catlogues of Enlightenment gives any domain granted power, which is made of win. |
| #20dr_rocktopusApr 09, 2009 14:50:19 | scrub-a-dub-dub off-topica |
| #21WyvernhandApr 09, 2009 18:46:36 | If you want to further boost your counterspellitude, check out the Rings of Greater Counterspelling from the DMGII. Unlike vanillia Rings of Counterspelling, these puppies go up to 6th level (oh look, Greater Dispel Magic! WEEEEEE) AND, instead of just countering spells cast ON you, they have the ability to counter spells cast NEAR you. Thats right, each one loaded up with a GDM will knock off another spell cast around you. And you don't even have to wear it. You just need a friend with any spellcasting ability at all (I'm lookin at you level 4+ Ranger or Paladin) and YOU can load in the GDM that it uses, getting all of yours sexy Master Specialist and Planar Touchstone bonuses. If you can pimp out a CL20 GDM (try UMDing a Bead of Karma from a Strand of Prayer Beads), your counterspell will be at a +29, meaning on a minimum roll of 1, you automatically CS at 30 which hits CL19 offensive spells. Roll a 2 or higher and you can knock out the CL20 or more incoming spells. Combine BMP with 2x Rings of Greater Counterspelling and Archmage's Master of Counterspelling and what do you get? Time Stop? Don't mind if I do! YOINK! |
| #22dr_rocktopusApr 09, 2009 19:04:06 | You have given me much to think on, Wyvern. Would you care to take a look at the counter-casting link? I think there's no conflict between those strategies and mine.... :: leans back :: Huh. |
| #23cloerApr 09, 2009 20:11:31 | let me see if i undestand it its a little complicated, counterspelling is using your spells to nullify your oponents spells??? the problem i see whit it is that your spells get used up to as well as you actions, so esentially you and the other caster are doing nothing, you migth as well agree to grab some popcorn and watch from the sidelines and see whose team wins. Or the one who runs out of spells first loses. Can someone please clarify? counter-casting seens cool, you make him waste a spell and do damage to him. |
| #24WyvernhandApr 09, 2009 20:25:22 | The glory of using Battlemagic Perception and Rings of Greater Counterspelling is that they are NON-ACTIONS. Unless there is errata somewhere that changes both of their uses to Immediate Actions, they are free. So...you are wizarding along, minding your own business, and BLAM, someone casts a spell within 120' of you that you don't like. You automatically know it and can spend - effort other than some minor preparations to completely nulify it before launching your own counterattack to reduce the impudent foe to a greasy ink smear on the catalogues of history. |
| #25dr_rocktopusApr 09, 2009 20:32:03 | Okay, Wyvern, you just won yourself the unenviable job of helping me with the war weaver's handbook. |
| #26phaedrusxyApr 09, 2009 20:43:47 | If you want to further boost your counterspellitude, check out the Rings of Greater Counterspelling from the DMGII. Unlike vanillia Rings of Counterspelling, these puppies go up to 6th level (oh look, Greater Dispel Magic! WEEEEEE) The regular ring goes up to 6th level spells, too. What the Greater Rings do is let you counterspell one spell per day as an immediate action, as if you'd readied a GDM to counter it, IIRC. |
| #27reisApr 09, 2009 22:48:06 | let me see if i undestand it its a little complicated, counterspelling is using your spells to nullify your oponents spells??? the problem i see whit it is that your spells get used up to as well as you actions, so esentially you and the other caster are doing nothing, you migth as well agree to grab some popcorn and watch from the sidelines and see whose team wins. Or the one who runs out of spells first loses. Can someone please clarify? yea you don't use readied actions to counterspell with a abjurer build. What you do is use Battlemagic Perception (shared with your familiar) and imbue familiar with spell ability and then use your familiar's actions and your immediate action to do the counterspelling. Ring of counterspelling isn't bad but you don't really need it and there are maybe better uses for your ring slots. |
