best way for an anthropomorphic octopus to get air breathing?

It's a monstrous humanoid, and this is for a soul eater (I'm going to hell), so necropolitan is out

On a side note, for making a soul eater, which is better, the octopus or the squid?

The two attacks of the squid are tantalizing, but I'm seeing the squid have a much harder time landing attacks with girallon arms, which are already at a -2 penalty (if you weren't "interesting" with your feats)

.....IT'S A VAMPIRE SQUID!!! Run for the hills!!!!!

Erm, yeah. I'm AFB, but I believe you'd be well-served by the Sandstorm "stillsuit" that traps body moisture. Should work just fine for this purpose.

The Amphibious Creature template can be applied to any Humanoid or Monstrous Humanoid and is LA +0. The only down side is that it reduces Dex by 2. If you can live with that, it makes it so a creature can breath air and water equally-well.

Take the feats Aberration Blood and Waterspawn, from Lords of Madness. One of the things it gives you is the ability to breathe air or water. Downside? Costs two feats, but it does set you up for Starspawn, which would get you more tentacle attacks.

Found it!

"Hydration Suit", Sandstorm, 1000 gp. Completely watertight, completely protects you from the need to make dehydration checks, and gives you superb protection against environmental heat. And for some reason, it doesn't pop like a balloon when you take damage... possibly self-sealing?

The only thing is, once you extract oxygen from the water, there's no oxygen in it anymore! It's a lot like why you can't wear a completely air-tight suit and go underwater like that.

By that merit, the Hydration Suit should be killing you too, as it has no listed mechanism for air intake. Should be pretty easy to handwave it the same way.... or attach a Decanter of Endless Water. That'll raise the price tag to 10,000, which is still entirely within reason. And you can still wear armor on top of it, I believe.

Hey, wait a second!

Upon reading the description of the stillsuit, I found that it counts as an air filter - meaning that you CAN get air in and out. The only question is whether pure diffusion is enough to get the air into your water fast enough - it's tricky, because water doesn't hold nearly as much oxygen per unit of volume as air does, and without lungs you can't suck in air.

custom magic item of air breathing? ring of water breathing is only 6k so it should be the same for the same lvl spell.

Unless I'm way off of my rocker (which has happened from time to time), I believe the Hydration Suit is probably based off of the Dune stillsuits. What they did was collect the body's excreted moisture (read: sweat), and processed it to be drinkable water (through a little tube in the facemask).

Not sure it would really work for this purpose.

I'd say go with the amphibious template. Makes the most sense. Because, hey, why not? You're already Chthulhu without wings.

I think it would, it's just a question of quantity of water. Fitting one to an anthropomorphic octopus is a problem, but otherwise it's already watertight, already designed to circulate and cleanse water effectively. Surely the same principle would apply with only minor variation?

Air Breathing is a 3rd level spell (for just about every class) from Stormwrack. Buy potions of it. Buy scrolls of it. Buy wands of it. With a 2 hour / level duration, it will last 10 hours at a time in those forms.

Or have a custom item created of it, as suggested above.

My best options are probably the stillsuit or the template. I don't feel like having a lethal problem with AMF, see...

I'm seeing it as, the suit could work if the water went past your gills instead of into your mouth - a minor modification.
