You have a melee dude, a divine caster, a skill monkey and now you'll be getting an arcane caster. What's wrong with your party again? O.o

We really do not have enough information to go on. We really need, at least:

  • Ability scores or ability score generation rules

  • Starting level

  • Preferred race, if any

  • What the other characters' builds are, not just their classes (druid in particular is very diverse in what it can do)

And so on.

In your party, especially if the druid is melee-focused, a wizard focusing on transmutation, conjuration, and divination would probably cover all the bases quite well. Buffing the team, providing information that the others cannot, and using battlefield control effects to steer the enemies is a powerful mix. There are a LOT of possible wizards that can do this, though.

Similarly, does he want a "wizard" wizard, or just any arcane-caster-type?

Whatever you do, don't let him specialise in Evocation and then ban transmutation :p Perhaps a transmutation specialist with evocation and enchantment as banned schools would even be best, really, but then he'll miss a lot of damaging spells (other schools still have damage too, though) and most newbie wizards tend to overfavour damage compared to control until they realise other classes can do damage too, but nobody controls like spellcasters do.

So 3d6 in order? Narrow that down a little for us please. This is my assumption when someone says normal rules, and I feel like you aren't using this method. 4d6 drop lowest arrange as you want, 28 point buy?

Whats the rogue do?

Well at level 5, an easy wizard build is....

Human wizard 5. Generalist wizard. Feats Spell focus illusion, enchantment, and greater spell focus in illusion. Wizard bonus feats, go for some cheap metamagic ones.

Tell him to prepare spells that target will saves, and maybe a few fort.  Stress how fireball, magic missile, ect are terrible and should not be cast. (Magic missile hits for 1d4+1. A H crossbow hits for 1d12. Average 3.5 or 6.5. the higher average also has way more uses per day)

Have him snag a familiar and don't use it for combat often. I like a raven, as it can fly up and scout some stuff occasionally.

Even moreso, do you have a theme to build around?
We could all basically say... "Wizard 20, Research new spells when you get time with arcane sight and scholar's touch, and use secret page for your spellbooks."
And you would be fine. Tell us more about the character, and the theme, and then we can REALLY trick it out for you.

After all, I think all my wizards should be using firearms, but it might not work for your setting. Tell us who you want to be, and where you will be so we can help.
